minor detail i love about leverage: parker can appear & disappear at will with no rational explanation, but ONLY when it’s played for comedy. in more tense and dramatic scenes, she has to have a known entrance or exit strategy as part of the overall heist plan. it’s like she has the ability to teleport but it’s powered by comedic timing lol.

So after Shane leaves the Metros, the team starts sending out Hayden Pike to do press to cover their asses and keep their more asshole-ish players from saying slurs in front of reporters.
After one inconsequential game, a reporter asks about what Coach Theriault and Hayden think of the future of hockey with their former star player playing with his husband. Theriault says some shitty PR nothing answer laced with so much disdain that Hayden just. can't. take. anymore.
Obviously his team wants him to shit-talk his best friend and de facto brother-in-law who happen to be playing the best hockey of a generation (he will never let Ilya know he thinks this). The reporter obviously is chomping at the bit for a "dissension in the locker room" story that will make his life even more miserable. So, fuck the both of them.
"and how about you Hayden, what do you think about the future of hockey with Hollander and Rozanov?"
"Well, I think they should get on having kids, like surrogacy or adoption of something"
Dead silence, the reporter blinks in confusion. He can feel the glare coming off Theriault burning into the side of his face. He doesn’t turn his head and blithely goes on.
“Yeah, specifically 3 girls. I have 3 girls so if they have 3 girls, we’d have a whole hockey team to start in the pee-wees and get to the PWHL. My Ruby would obviously be a defender. She’d spend her whole life in the box, but she'd be such a good enforcer, especially if she was playing with her sisters. Jade is sneaky fast, so forward for her. And I know Amber is a baby, but I swear she’s got goalie eyes. My son Arthur is already the peacemaker of the family, so Uncle Shane could start training him up on all the rules so he can be our ref. But Shane and Ilya would have to get themselves another defender and a right or left wing with a center. Yep, that’s the future in hockey I’d love to see with Hollander and Rozanov”
Thus Hayden makes headlines bigger than any other time in his whole career. His time in the locker room does get shittier, but it’s all worth it for the call from Shane telling him that Ilya loved his vision of the future so much he cried looking at baby girl names online and researching PWHL teams.

Unironically, this is a great example of why the arts are just as important as everything else because they teach important skill sets that other fields of study usually don't. Empathy, presence, ethics, collaborative teamwork, how to compartmentalize parts of your life in a healthy way (being in-character vs being out-of-character + the aftermath, where you have to readjust and often do some self-care after an intense in-character experience), thinking in abstract or unconventional ways to problem-solve, getting to know yourself better through art and play---all of these things will make you better at other things. Just like knowledge in math or science or psychology (or whatever else) can give you inspiration or new skills for your art.
in my heart MB had a fake old bleach job for all of platform decay. its scary and i hope it changes its hair back to normal soon.

Part of the reason I have a complicated emotional relationship with Javert is because— Javert is BAD. He is a BAD person
But adaptations often don’t understand why he’s bad, and make him bad for the wrong reasons.
In the book, Javert is bad because he’s a cop. He is the Best Cop It is Possible to Be, he’s honest and completely obedient to the law, and he’s TERRIBLE, because you can’t be “good” when you’re enforcing a system that is inherently cruel.
But like... in Les Mis 1998 Javert is portrayed as being an unusually evil person who just has a weird obsession with Valjean, unlike other cops, who are Good. Les Mis 1998 even adds a Good Cop side character who lets Valjean go free in Montreuil-sur-Mer, while joking with Valjean about how Javert is unusually evil and none of the other cops like him.

And as I’ve ranted about a lot, BBC Les Mis Javert’s desire to enforce the law is portrayed as a good honorable quality, and there’s an entire precinct of “good cop” side characters who help him.....while BBC Javert’s actual “moral failing” is what Andrew Davies calls his “twisted love” for Valjean.
and I’m just like...eh? Javert is bad, yes!! But that’s noT WHY he’s bad. He’s not bad because he’s gay, he’s bad because he’s a cop. He’s not bad because he’s an usually evil cop, he’s actually an unusually “good” cop— and being a “good cop” is why he’s bad!
Anyway....my problem with these adaptations isn’t that they make Javert a bad person, it’s that they completely misunderstand why he’s a bad person. They turn a critique of the police as a whole into “one guy was weirdly mean, and then he died and everything was fine”
One of the things that makes the 98 Javert situation really stand out to me is that ...yeah, sure, other cops don't like Javert in book!canon *because he's too good a cop*, he's not corrupt, he doesn't take bribes or work closely with criminals and he is not comfortable or chill with other cops who do that! They specifically distrust him and shut him out of some things because he's Too Honest! Flipping it around so that he's the exceptional Bad Guy is such a wild misreading but it keeps happening! whyyyy
Because society is afraid to say that most cops around the world enforce a system that was built to keep poor people oppressed and the rich and affluent in power. Victor Hugo literally said this about Les Mis, quote for quote:
"So long as there shall exist, by reason of law and custom, a social condemnation, which, in the face of civilisation, artificially creates hells on earth, and complicates a destiny that is divine, with human fatality; so long as the three problems of the age — the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of woman by starvation, and the dwarfing of childhood by physical and spiritual night — are not solved; so long as, in certain regions, social asphyxia shall be possible; in other words, and from a yet more extended point of view, so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this cannot be useless"
Society continues to fear admitting to that, so of course Javert is painted as a bad apple.
