Book Review: The Rhise of Light by Max B. Sternberg

Leon Rhise was a proud commanding naval officer, until one mistake cost the lives of his entire crew. He returns home full of shame and anger at himself. Instead of finding refuge in familiar surroundings, Leon is disgusted to learn his sister is about to enter into an arranged marriage to a much older man with whom she is not in love. Then, he and his father argue about the future of the family business. His father disowns and banishes his youngest son. Leon leaves with no destination, little food, and hardly any funds.

That night, and angel named Rohiel speaks to Leon. Leon wakes up thinking the encounter must have been a dream. He continues along the path not knowing where he is headed.

Eventually, he meets a group of travelers. They become friends and allow Leon to join them on their journey. Toward the end of their journey, the pack must win the ultimate battle: defeating an army of skeletons. The skeletons represent elements of our shameful past that we must now face. The battle is arduous but vital.

<ins>The Rhise of Light</ins> is a science fiction/fantasy novel about redemption and forgiveness through the unconditional love of God. Along the journey of life, we err in judgment. Some of our sins are more egregious than others. We regret our sins and long for another chance to redeem ourselves. The wait for redemption is agonizing. We feel alone, irredeemable, and angry at ourselves. As a result, we disconnect ourselves from God, feeling unworthy of Him. Thankfully, God is merciful, but we must accept His mercy and forgive ourselves and not repeat those errors. Until then, like, Leon, our pasts will unrelentingly haunt us.

Book Review: The Storyteller by Celena Janton

Celena Janton takes readers to England in the 1530s with Arabella Benjamin for a journey filled with knights in shining armor, romance, and political upheaval.

Arabella, the daughter of Melissa Benjamin, finds herself courted by Sir Lancelot and his squire Robbie, who is later knighted, shortly after being transported to 16th-century England. Eventually, she must decide between a man she lathes and a man Through Sir Lancelot, Arabella secures a placement with a wealthy family that becomes impressed with her charming personality and culinary skills.

However, the greatest, and most difficult, journey is that of faith.

Arabella has also brought her religious convictions, which are unconventional for that time, and her knowledge of history, which includes the fate of Queen Anne Boleyn. She is adamant about her beliefs in the relationship between mankind and God and readily foreshadows the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn. Unfortunately, some people deem her a heretic and attempt to punish her. Arabella soon finds herself trapped with no means of escape. Only God can save her. Yet, she remains steadfast in her religious beliefs.

<ins>The Storyteller</ins> is a fascinating tale about the importance of trusting God, regardless of the intensity of adversity, for He rewards the faithful, and finding true love.

Book Review: We Called Him Yeshua by C.J. Penn

<ins>We Called Him Yeshua</ins> is a collection of possible perspectives from some of the men and women Christ healed. Penn takes readers on a journey from their depths of despair to the joy of salvation. Some of the miracles in this book are the wedding where Christ turned water into wine and restored sight to a blind man. None of the other main characters have a religious background. They feel they cannot be cured of their physical or emotion wounds or escape from their immoral lives. One day, they hear about a man who is becoming popular through his teachings and inexplicable healings. They feel drawn to Him. Once they encounter Christ’s unconditional love and healing power, they become some of His most faithful followers and encourage others to seek Him. Moreover, their journeys are reminders that Christ can heal the most troubled souls. Also, we can still witness miracles and redemption.

Penn also devotes a few chapters to the perspective of Christ Himself. The details in each chapter allow readers to understand the characters’ transformations from suffering to accepting themselves as worthy of God’s blessings.

A free copy of this book was downloaded in return for an honest review.

Five-Stars: Book Review: Blossoms Over Bringewood by Celena Janton

A piercing scream shattered the reverie of a bride-to-be. Instantly, Melissa Berington left the swans in the Thames River and the cherry tree blossoms to follow the horrific sound across the lush grounds of Bringewood Manor, all the way up to her bedroom, where she finds a young woman about to give birth. The year is 1743. To end the curse haunting her family and threatening her marriage, Melissa must revisit the past.

The story continued with a wedding ceremony at Bringewood Manor, which at the time is owned by the d’Windesleys. Lord Rickert d’Windesley found himself instantly attracted to Melissa, but the feelings were not mutual-at first. She recalled that her fiancé Tom had told her Lord d’Windesley was wicked. Nevertheless, Melissa convinced herself that knowing this stranger will help her uncover the dark secrets of the estate she inherited.

Miraculously, God introduced Melissa to American preacher Jonathan Edwards when she accepted an invitation from Lady Julianne d’Windesley, the sister of Lord d’Windesley, to attend his sermon. Melissa was mesmerized by his words, as if Preacher Edwards spoke directly to her. She was even more taken upon realizing that God answered her prayers for help.

Janton reminds us that God never ceases to work wonders in our lives through His unconditional love. He answers our cries for help. He changes stubborn hearts. He is merciful. Moreover, God gives us chances to remedy mistakes, and knowing of His saving grace gives us the strength to act toward a better future.

Furthermore, the attention to detail allows readers to visualize life among the nobility in 18th century England, and the fluctuating feelings between Melissa and Lord d’Windesley add additional suspense. Janton also refers to the prequel <ins>The Songbird and the Secret</ins> often enough to remind readers of how the saga began. However, <ins>Blossoms Over Bringewood</ins> can be an independent story.

A free copy of this book was exchanged in return for an honest review.

Book Review: Journeys to England & Ireland by Alexis de Tocqueville

Translated by George Lawrence and K.P. Mayer

Through a series of letters to one of his friends, De Tocqueville gave lengthy, objective accounts of what he observed while traveling through England and Ireland. His journey began in England, where he had the privilege of observing sessions of Parliament and meeting with prominent politicians. De Tocqueville also compared the debates in Parliament to the American and French forms of government. Plus, he explained discussed the roles of the Anglican and Catholic Churches in England and Ireland, respectively. According to de Tocqueville, the Irish were devout Catholics. Hence, the church played a central role in their lives. In Ireland, de Tocqueville described the long and taxing labors of the working class and how localities oversaw their respective legal systems.

Some of the names and dates are incorrect, according to the translators. However, the plethora of detail de Tocqueville used allowed the reader to visualize a session in Parliament, the division between Catholics and Protestants, his interviews with prominent clergy and politicians at the national and local levels, and returning to a hut after an arduous day at the mill. As a result, readers have the impression de Tocqueville wrote what he saw and heard at those moments.

<ins>Journeys to England & Ireland</ins> teaches readers about the political and social climates of England and Ireland in the 1800s from the perspectives of people who changed the laws and witnessed the transformation to an increasingly industrial economy.

This book was borrowed from a library.

Reviews Appreciated

Greetings,

My novella Celtic Warriors is on sale for $0.99 at major online booksellers. I would appreciate fair reviews of the book. Below is a synopsis of the plot and buy links for additional information.

Celtic Warriors is about two Protestant families from England who move to Ireland in 1652 and encounter fierce opposition from Catholic Irish nationalists who resent the English invading their homeland. While animosity between the Protestants and Catholics heightens, a deeper relationship with God that can only be achieved through adversity develops even more among members of both sides.

Clean suspense, mystery, and romance combine to make this Christian historical fiction novella exciting and wholesome.

As for book reviews, the choice is up to you. Think carefully before submitted your piece to a reviewer. A book review is not guaranteed, unless you pay a fee. A positive review is never guaranteed. Start with someone you can trust for honest feedback. Make sure to provide him or her with a review copy. A review copy is your finished manuscript with a disclaimer that the copy is only for the intended recipient and not distribution.

If your occupation involves preparing or reviewing reports or memoranda, pay attention to the syntax and diction of the document, both of which set the tone for audience. For instance, an analytic report usually has fewer adjectives to explain the results in. the shortest way. However, a promotional script would have more adjectives to convince the audience to buy that product. Incorporate these techniques into your personal writing.

Different writing styles can develop by continuously writing, even by repeating the same sentences. Somehow, another way of expressing the same idea will come to mind. Therefore, keep writing though your sentences may, literally, be the same. For instance, I provided the same positive feedback for customer service surveys. One day, I realized how else I could respond with the same meaning.

If you are having trouble composing your piece, write about that which you are certain. Do not worry about placement. Record what you know will be in you finished product. If you are uncomfortable with dialogue, at lease describe the setting. Soon, you will have written at least one paragraph upon which you can build. Moreover, you will not need to bother with those details later.

Be understanding with yourself if you struggle with putting even a few lines on the record. Sometimes, a brief e-mail seems tedious as we struggle with syntax and diction to make sure the recipient understands what we mean to say. Other barriers may be fatigue or being busy with something else. For me, rearranging the words after typing the piece resolves that struggle, for I can see which results is the best. Repeating the words to myself helps me discover how the message can be understood or misunderstood.

Use events from your life to create stories. If you feel uncomfortable with that approach, that is fine. If you try this method, you may have an easier time with writing, for you are more invested in the plot, you have a better understanding of the background leading to your climax, and you already have your characters. You can change the names and alter how events unfolded to make a fiction story.

Keep your drafts, whether written or typed, periodically. This way, you can see the extent of your accomplishments. When you deem necessary, discard the drafts after a short period of time to avoid clutter.

Removing clutter is worthwhile, even if you take one or two days off from writing. In fact, eliminating distractions can improve your productivity. You may be more focused with fewer distractions. You may feel relaxed with the additional space. Clutter can be physical or intangible, such as computer files and e-mails, that you no longer need. If you divine new material while cleaning, make a note of your thoughts for future reference.
