Traveling in an Urban Fantasy Setting

  • regular human modes of transport: walking, biking, public, car, bus, subway
  • portals hidden throughout the human world: in laundromats, behind shelves of select stores, doors in a subway station, fountains, ...
  • riding lightning or clouds from highrise to highrise
  • carsharing (especially if it is an oblivious human getting into a car with a group of non-humans)
  • carsharing services specifically for supernaturals (including regulations about which species may ride with each other)
  • gateways activated via seemingly random graffiti
  • tiny shortcuts through narrows gaps that were long forgotten by humans
  • jumping from building to building using magical boosters
  • ancient tunnels built underneath the city
  • taking shortcuts across rivers with magic that allows to walk on water
  • taxis that appear normal at first glance, but travel via unnatural pathways

• Fidgeting and stuttering do NOT always indicate that someone is nervous.

• Avoiding eye contact does NOT always mean someone is lying.

• Having a hard time focusing does NOT always mean someone is lazy.

• Carrying around a stuffed animal or blanket does NOT make someone childish.

• Poor motor skills is NOT a direct indication of intelligence.

Not everyone fits into your box. Deal with it.

Hey do y’all remember when Boeing fucking killed a guy last year. And we all said “huh I guess Boeing fucking killed a guy” and then went on with our lives. And everybody knew that Boeing had fully just fucking executed a guy and nothing came of it. Like there was no police investigation no justice no nothing. Like literally EVERYBODY knew that Boeing had full on murdered a guy to silence him and there wasn’t any consequences for them. Kinda crazy.

and there was even less talk when openai did the exact same thing more recently

So for those who are, very understandably uninitiated on this story:

On 23 October last year (2024) the New York Times published an interview with former OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji who worked on organising and gathering data for OpenAI until 2022 when he begun thinking about the morality of it. He eventually came to the conclusion that what OpenAI is doing blatantly violates copyright law and decided to leave the company altogether in August 2024.

After he came out with this accusation he was set to appear in court to testify against OpenAI’s data-gathering practices, something which had the potential of being a complete disaster for the company and the generative AI industry as a whole.

That was until 26 November, just days before he was due to appear in court, when he suddenly and mysteriously was found dead inside his own apartment. Investigators concluded that the death was self-inflicted, something which his family has disputed.

There was also “sign of struggle in the bathroom and looks like someone hit him in the bathroom based on blood spots”, and his apartment showed signs of having been ransacked for evidence: “The pin drive is missing. His computer was messed up.”.

Overall it feels pretty clear-cut what happened, that is to say that OpenAI had him killed because he was a legitimate threat to their business, indicating that they are fully aware that the way they’re gathering data is completely illegal.

im sorry what?

Open killed the guy.

More B. Dylan Hollis quotes without context for funzies:

ITS ALREADY MULCH!!

We got onion and garlic, the hallowed powders of middle America.

This is why we don’t perform lobotomies anymore.

I’m using butter because I have standards. …..do I?

Oh fun! They’re individually wrapped.

Thank you… dead lady.

Are you feeling Victorian? I’m feeling very Victorian.

Don’t worry, there’s still a half cup of walnuts, ‘cause when it’s bad it might as well crunch.

First, we crush the hopes and dreams out of a half pound of vanilla wafers.

It’s vintage, so I rock with it, even though it’s loud and objectively distasteful.

WHY IS THE SUN SO BRIGHT?? …did they drop the bomb?

Good morning. …it’s not.

Every mythical creature has a natural counterpart meant to balance them out. Elves and dwarves, werewolves and vampires, etc. Humans have just discovered they too have a counterpart.

The thing in front of me was slightly to the left of everything I knew. It's face, the way it stood, even its clothes. None of it looked quite right and every part of my being was screaming at me to run.

The worst part of it was its smile. Teeth too white, eyes too blank.

"Lama'ak," it said in a scratchy voice with so many layers that I couldn't even begin to tell if it had a distinct gender.

It was staring at me, waiting for something. After a few moments, I said, "Sammie."

The thing's smile grew bigger. "Meet."

God, I hope it isn't calling me it's next meal.

I nodded. "Nice, ah, nice to meet you, too..?"

Its head tilted slightly as it stuck its hand out.

Okay, okay. This was...a thing that's happening.

I took its freezing hand with my own and shook.

"Do you...want something to eat? A sandwich?"

"Lama'ak," it said again, "No meat."

Oh, thank god. "...do you want some cookies?"

It nodded once and sat on my porch. It was unsettling to watch. It didn't sit so much as it seemed to fold the space around it until it was on the floor.

I closed the screen door, just in case this...whatever it is needs to be invited in like a vampire, and all but ran to the kitchen.

Out of sight, I took a second to catch my breath.

Was this really happening? God, I'd die if this was a horror movie.

"Sure, Sammie," I whispered harshly, throwing open my pantry, "let's offer the creepy creature food because that's always a good idea! Never gone wrong for anyone ever."

Whatever. It's too late now. There's a thing on my porch waiting for cookies, so I guess it's gonna get some cookies.

i think the ship has sailed on 'we have GOT to get regular porn back on this website'. i mean, obviously we should, it's absurd to have ever gotten rid of it. but as far as the meme goes i think we are just like this now. aware of the eroticism of machines and plants and chemical processes. the cat's out of the bag is what i'm saying, even getting the regular porn back won't make us normal again. this book has been left out in the rain and no amount of flattening and hairdrying is going to straighten it out again.

mmm. yes squash that errant book, hydraulic press it and- excuse me

being a kid and hearing adults say stuff like "woah 2011 was 4 years ago haha" didn't really convey the fucking horror of a youtube video crossing my recommended labelled "9 years ago" and it's from 2017. that's not true. 9 years ago is 2010 or something. don't lie.

If you have a fucked up sicknasty fanfic you've been thinking about sharing but are unsure, this post is your sign to run to AO3 and Just Do It: 1. Someone somewhere wants to read it. Even if it's only one person, that person matters

2. Your creativity matters and so does your ability to share it

3. Serial harassers in fandom spaces are beginning to express discomfort that sites like AO3 completely strip their ability to do anything about fic they don't like, sometimes going as far as leaving entire fandoms due to the influx of "problematic fiction without a chance for consequences to the author". Posting your fanworks to AO3 actively contributes to making harassers feel unsafe and powerless in fandom

4. Militant anti-fanfic content creators also cannot do anything about fic posted to AO3

5. You can post anonymously to AO3, with the ability to de-anonymize at any time

6. You can moderate comments before making them visible on your fic, restrict comments to logged-in users only, or turn off comments altogether, meaning you can post anonymously and completely turn off comments if you choose

there should be a pill you can take one time that will shrivel up your uterus and abort it through one last horrible period

since there is such an "english speakers who don't even try to pronounce a foreign mame correctly" epidemic, native english speakers often try to overcorrect and end up thinking they have a moral imperative to pronounce every foreign name correctly at all times. so i'm gonna hold your hand and look into your eyss as i say this: you can't. you can't pronounce every sound in a language you don't speak. and that's fine. it happens to the rest of us too. we won't be mad so long as you try your best.

“I did some research to pronounce this name correctly” = 👍 great! even if the pronunciation was still off (and learning to pronounce a foreign language correctly takes a lot of practice) people generally appreciate it when someone goes the extra mile for accuracy, and honestly, languages are cool

“I’m probably not saying that correctly”/“sorry for my pronunciation” = 👍 understandable! foreign languages often have sounds that aren’t used in English and learning to correctly pronounce unfamiliar phonemes is genuinely difficult even with help

“lol I’m not even gonna TRY to pronounce that 😂” = 👎 THIS is the problem, if treats languages other than English like they are inherently ‘weird’ or ‘overly complicated’ just because you aren’t familiar with them

“One thousand apologies for my butchering of this beautiful effervescent tongue, I will now flagellate myself as punishment for my crimes” = 👎 chill
