Leadership Beyond Borders offers a meaningful account of global leadership in an ever-connected world. The author looks at the capacities of cultural intelligence, empathy, and flexibility - the three key capacities of modern leaders currently undertaking diverse teams and international challenges. Zwayen, a professional in his own right, complements theory and real-world examples that demonstrate how genuine and lasting leadership welcomes collaboration across borders and recognizes leadership not limited by borders.

This book is refreshing in its emphasis on inclusive leadership and self-awareness. Instead of sending readers to subscribe to one style of leadership, it urges readers to cultivate a mindset that is habitually inflected with curiosity, respect, and open communication. The writing is practical, measured, and even more relevant for leaders in business or aspiring leaders.

Leadership Beyond Borders reminds the reader to lead with intention, authenticity, and a truly global attitude.

Helps Westerners Learn How to Conduct Business in Iraq

There are many Westerners who want to conduct business of one kind or another in Iraq. Often, though, they run into cultural problems that they might not even realize are hampering their efforts. They may offend someone or conduct themselves in a way that is perfectly permissible in the states, but that will instantly put them in the doghouse with their new colleagues or contacts.

This book explains the most common ways that foreigners run into problems in Iraq when they come there for business purposes or when they open up communications with Iraq-based individuals or companies. If you plan to do business there but don’t know much about the culture, you should definitely consider this to be required reading.

In “Leadership Beyond Borders,” Midhat Zwayen draws from two decades (and his Phd work) of experience in Iraq’s private sector to deliver a remarkable guide for Western executives navigating the Iraqi business landscape. He argues that traditional Western leadership models fall short in Iraq; instead, success demands cultural sensitivity, servant-leadership, and flexibility. The book blends historical context, firsthand anecdotes, and actionable strategies, offering readers a realistic roadmap to building trust, bridging cultural gaps, and leading effectively in a complex, transitional market. A relatively short read, it is nonetheless richly detailed and organized.

From the outset, this book struck me with its clarity and depth. It is not a theoretical manual, but an honest guide written from real experience in Iraq. Honestly, I liked it because of how Midhat Zwayen dismantles Western prejudices and proposes servant leadership as a practical, not idealistic, tool. I found it very useful in understanding that business success depends not only on strategies, but also on cultural sensitivity, active listening, and genuine adaptation.

I can say that Leadership Beyond Borders made me reflect deeply on my own leadership and communication style. I understood that leading beyond borders doesn't mean imposing a style, but rather learning to read other people's cultural codes and building trust from there. This book is definitely an interesting guide for those who want to lead with cultural sensitivity and purpose, especially in times that demand genuine collaboration. Personally, this reading reminded me that authentic leadership knows no borders: it begins with the humility to listen and the willingness to understand. Midhat Zwayen achieves something extraordinary: speaking directly to Western leaders to connect through empathy, respect, and openness. Recommended.

Leadership Beyond Borders: A Western Executive’s Guide to the Iraqi Business Mindset by Midhat Zwayen is a useful read for those wanting to expand business relations outside the western world or even just your knowledge on cultural differences within the business world.

The author draws on his extensive experience in Iraq’s private sector and international collaborations highlighting the critical role of servant leadership, cultural sensitivity and flexibility in achieving a successful sustainability. Alongside the authors own personal knowledge there is also historical analysis, experiential insights and actionable strategies. It was interesting to read about the breakdown of barriers and misconceptions that can occur and helps you understand a little better the what’s and whys behind Iraqi business behaviours.

The way it’s written is more in the style of a conversation with someone which sometimes makes it easier for the reader to comprehend than feel like you’re being dictated to. This is a better read for someone that deals with business deals or international relations than someone like me, in the education industry, but it’s interesting to read about the cultural differences that happen but also perhaps take on board some of the understanding when encountering interactions with international students.

This is a punchy, practical read about leading across cultures in an increasingly connected workplace, with plenty of real-world examples that keep things grounded rather than academic. The author lays out clear tools for bridging cultural gaps and managing risk while building mutual understanding, which felt immediately usable for anyone dealing with international teams or clients. The structure is tidy, the tone is straightforward, and the advice avoids fluff, focusing on behaviours that travel well across borders. Characters in the case studies come through with believable motives and constraints, making the scenarios feel authentic rather than staged. Overall, it’s an easy recommendation for managers stepping into global roles or seasoned leaders wanting a refresher on cultural intelligence and stakeholder alignment.
