About the authors

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

Amazingly good read..
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2023Here I am, a senior, just started reading David Copperfield, and being a book addict, this is one of the most enthralling novels I have read in ages. And to think its a classic that transports the reader to another time and place. Dickens wrote some long books, that I bought and are waiting to be enjoyed. Truly, great books and singers, movies etc. are timeless. Thank goodness these gifts given by these amazing people can still be loved today. As a note, these Wordsworth editions deserve praise as well. Very well made, attractive, easy to read all for remarkable prices.

Great pick for the price
Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2025Great quality paper, includes illustrations, and a great book all around. The cover photo looks like an uninspired blurry stock image, but it cost me $4 only so I wouldn’t dream of complaining.

one third thru
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2024So far so good. I have read a good bit of Dickens, and this is good so far. A bit wordy.
Too early to give a good grade. It is a long one with very small print.
I would say, go for it.

Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2016A brilliant read. Found Dickens difficult to read when I was young but found, having read the abridged version first, I really enjoyed this extremely entertaining novel and could appreciate and enjoy it so much more. Amazing characters and will probably read this novel over and over again.

David Copperfield, it's been a long time...
Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013I don't remember the last time I read "David Copperfield." I've heard it said that this book of Dickens' is somewhat autobiographical, but I don't know for sure. One thing I've enjoyed since I bought my 3 Wordsworth Classics is the exposure to 18th century English culture through Dickens' wonderful prose. "David Copperfield" will have to wait until "Oliver Twist" and "Great Expectations" had been read through first.

The reader meets s man of character.
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019I enjoyed Oliver Twist so decided to tackle David Copperfield. I couldnt put it down. Dickens is a compelling storyteller that has endured generations. His characters come alive and you know them. His descriptive writing puts the reader in the story.

Hatef Rad3 out of 5 starsGreat Story But Font Is Way Too Small
Reviewed in the Netherlands on December 29, 2020I wish there was a way to rate book content and its print separately because this book is a 5 star classic but the print is a 2.
In general, I like these cheap and compact Wordsworth Editions classics and I'm almost happy with most of them so far but, I feel like in this one they went way too far in trying to make it compact with a font that hurts my eyes after reading it for half an hour. I'd just split it in two books or add more pages with a bigger font. I'm considering buying another copy otherwise, I'm pretty sure I'll end up wearing glasses after finishing this book!

Little Bren5 out of 5 starsAnother excellent Dickens classic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 23, 2023Dickens has described this as his favourite character. And indeed, I liked David Copperfield myself (although my favourite is Mr Pickwick, of Pickwick Papers). The book as a whole is excellent. So many engaging characters, and a superb storyline. I watched the story serialised on BBC tv years ago, and was amazed that Uriah Heap was just as (falsely) grovelling, and Dora just as irritating as in the tv series. But it really is a wonderful book, and well worth reading. I will definitely read it again. Highly recommended.
