'A perfect introduction to art for parents and children to enjoy together'. - The Guardian
A brand-new combined, revised, and expanded edition of the ground-breaking, iconic art book series for children - perfect for readers aged 7-12
Two decades ago, Phaidon published the first volume in The Art Book for Children series (adapted especially for children from Phaidon’s iconic The Art Book), which quickly became beloved by children and parents the world over. To share its legacy with a new generation of readers, this combined, updated, and expanded edition pairs a selection of ‘best of’ artists from the original series with 30 brand-new contemporary entries.
This single volume features 60 artists through a wide range of large-scale, full-page reproductions of their artworks, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, video, prints, and installations from across time and space. Each page showcases defining artworks by the artists, combined with an interactive and informative conversation, giving relatable and memorable contexts for children, and inspiring a curiosity and appreciation for the Visual Arts that will continue into adulthood.
With a fresh new design, this book both features the ‘best of’ from the original two volumes, plus new entries, specially selected in collaboration with art historian and writer, Ferren Gipson.

Perfect book for styling kid's space and full of great art content for littles!
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2026I was looking for a 'coffee table book' for my nursery - How silly - but this is perfect! Elevated, beautiful, full of great beginner's art education for a little one.
I would recommend for a nursery, playroom, or playful coffee table set up. I have this on an end table next to my rocking chair.

Wonderful book for kids - adult art lovers will like it too!
Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2025Wonderful book for young artists and all curious youngsters alike. Numerous paintings and works from every historical age are presented and discussed in a lively and dialectical way that engages kids, and all this without dumbing it down to them. This is one of the best things about the book, it does not speak to kids in a way that assumes they are docile innocents. Best art book for kids that I have come across in my 73 years.

Great intro to art book!
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2019I didn’t take any art classes in college, so my understanding of classic art is very limited. I saw this on sale in the gift shop at the Sonoma Museum of Art, I picked it up thinking it would be fun to read to my daughter. I have learned so much from reading it, and it’s lead to very interesting discussions because of how the author poses questions about the art. I wish it included more female artists, but I do understand that many of the predominant artists were male. It’s a beautifully hardbound book, with bright colors, and easy to read text. My six-year-old and I are having a great time reading about two or three artists before bedtime. She liked it so much she asked me to get the white book.

Cool 20th century art book to introduce visual art
Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024It isn’t exclusively 20th century art… there are probably 4 or 5 older artists, but I’d love a second volume that does the same thing with no (or only a few) 20th century artists.

smr5 out of 5 stars9 year old loved it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2013When I looked at this book I wished I could spend a lot more time with it and do some of the things it suggested. The nine year old, who likes painting and drawing, said it was great and has used it with the rest of his family in an 'art afternoon', when the weather was too bad to go out.
