About the author

HELLO! HELLO! EVERYBODY! I love my readers! My readers have more oomph and wit than any readers on Earth!
NOT MY TYPE: One Woman Verses a President. That's my new book. It debuted on The New York Times Best Seller List. I am still in shock! It hit at #2!
I am an old journalist. You know me, honey. I live in a tiny cabin in the mountains in Upstate New York where I eat stacks and stacks of peanut butter and banana sandwiches and throw the ball for the dogs.

Meet the man behind the myth
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2011I've read many of Hunter S. Thompson's books and I've always been intrigued by his persona, or the man behind the myth, so to speak.
Carroll's HUNTER fit the bill perfectly in helping me to understand the real Hunter S. Thompson. Because the author spent time with him, and she includes extensive first-hand interviews with many people who knew him, the book really draws an outstanding portrait of what the guy was really like. This book is well-researched, extremely well-organized and it also has some gonzo moments of its own---it's laugh-out-loud funny more than once. Thompson's amazing and bazaar personality is given a human side in this terrific read.

Not so good...
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2013Although I enjoyed the authors writing style, I didn't care for the "meat" of the book. It was primarily made up of anecdotes and opinions of Hunter S. Thompson from friends from the past or various family members. I was very disappointed.

Tons of Fun
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2014A light hearted look at the legend. A pleasant change from the breathless admiration or solemn analysis so often applied to this interesting character. An amusing and skilful poke of the stick - short, sharp and incisive. Well worth the time.

Best HST bio there is
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2011Hunter S. Thompson has been my favorite author since I was a teen, and once I read through all of his works I needed more. I started checking out the various biographies written about the famous "Gonzo" journalist, but found a lot of them lacking in real detail. None of them had the emotional connection or insight into Hunter, one of America's most creative and original writers. Then I read HUNTER: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson. The author's personal connection to Hunter may just be the reason why this biography stands out among the rest. I find myself going back to it frequently and rereading sections that give me a clearer and deeper understanding about the events and circumstances in Hunter's life that shaped him into the incredible, prolific writer he became. I have the original hard copy and now picked it up for my Kindle as well. Highly recommend.

Just a sample on the Kindle... not the full book
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2011Maybe I just misread the product description, but I felt like the way this book listed in the Kindle marketplace it would have been the full text and was inclined to make the awesomely priced $1.99 purchase. However, as I started reading the book only about 50 pages later did I come across a message stating, "This is the end of the Kindle edition of this book, you can read the full book for free online." I would have gladly paid $5 to read the full book on my kindle, rather than have to go to the website, waste $2 on a product that I will likely not finish now.
The book itself so far seems fairly interesting, if not a little disjointed, and is a Hunter bio written in the gonzo style.
I'd recommend just checking this book out for free online (can do a Google search to find it), if you are interested in reading it, and pick up a Hunter S. Thompson classic on your Kindle instead.

Useless. Don't waste your time.
Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2019Carroll's writing was quite intriguing. The stories that she chose to share from Hunter's childhood were rather funny, yet frightening. I would have loved to read more in detail about the rest of his life and her experiences.
I was cautious when purchasing this book, as I had heard it was not finished and one would have to read the rest on a website. After thinking about it, I decided "might as well". Turns out the link doesn't even work.
Basically this is a story of an evil, wicked, child.

Not the Entire Book :(
Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2013This is NOT the entire book... After about 2 Chapters, you are directed to a website where you can download the rest in RTF. This makes it a real pain in the ass to read on your Kindle since you can't bookmark your page in rtf format. So, every time you leave and come back to it you find yourself at the very beginning - again.

Mark Hill1 out of 5 starsNot impressed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2011This isn't really a proper biography. It's a bit of a gimmick, writing about Hunter Thompson in the style of Hunter Thompson. I'd say download the free sample and if you're into this sort of thing then buy the book. It doesn't cost much. But for me, I just couldn't be bothered with it.

Jeremy1 out of 5 starsSample posing as a book
Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2019This is just a short sample of the actual book. The one I paid money to read and didn't get. If I wanted to read it on their website I would have done that. Kind of eliminates the purpose of buying a portable format when you don't get a portable version. Would rate lower but 1 star seems to be the minimum.
