Cloudspotting for Beginners
Purchase options and add-ons
Renowned journalist, public speaker, and founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society Gavin Pretor-Pinney details the key facts and characteristics about each major cloud type. To accompany these scientific tidbits, William Grill’s gorgeous illustrations of vast colorful skies and mesmerizing cloud patterns create a calming, thought-provoking learning experience.
From low-lying Stratus to high-flying Cirrus, Cloudspotting for Beginners covers how clouds are formed, the altitudes they prefer, the curious shapes they take, how they affect other meterological events, and more. The book breaks down the life and structure of a cloud on a molecular level, and then even expands on their interesting cross-planetary variations—for example, Jupiter’s clouds are composed of ammonia ice crystals and Saturn’s clouds congregate in an inexplicable hexagon around the planet's North Pole.
Clouds require a fascinating amount of chemical precision in order to exist, yet they disappear and form again on a daily basis with ease. Cloudspotting for Beginners is a whimsical lesson on the oft-overlooked extraordinary lives of clouds that will serve as a gentle reminder to be present and observant in the face of impermanence. Just as informative as it is poetic and peaceful, this is the perfect guide for cloud appreciators and sky lovers.

Pick a clear day when just a few white puffs scatter the blue. Try to spot where the faintest patch of cloud is beginning to appear. It’ll look at first like the very tip of a cloud is forming.
Gradually, your little white smudge might build into dazzling, bright mounds. A cloud has been born!
You will soon be able to say which of the ten main types of cloud yours is. Each type has its own special qualities. Each has a part of the sky where it likes to hang out. And each has a fancy Latin name.
So, what will your cloud grow up to be?

Beautiful and High Quality!
Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2025I bought this as a gift for a friend that loves clouds. I was a bit worried about the printing quality because you never know, but I am very happy about the quality of the book itself as well as how the ink appears on the page!

Grandkids and I are learning together!
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2024My granddaughter is starting to read, but both of them like looking at the sky, and this book has helped us all identify the clouds we find here in Southern Cal. The illustrations are beautiful - simplified but thorough and clear - and the text is so well-written! We have been having such fun identifying clouds by type as well as by shape. My grandson does love "snake" clouds. :) I can't wait to take them somewhere with a larger variety.
I am a long-time member of the Cloud Appreciation Society, and I recommend that as well, if you are a lover of cloud watching.

Great way to learn about clouds.
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2024I learned somethings about clouds in pilot training years ago, but didn't really use the knowledge much, so it slipped away. We do a lot of traveling now and knowing the different cloud types we see is interesting and helps us get an idea of the weather coming our way. The thing about this book is that it's great for all ages, and presents the information in a way that's easy to understand and memorable. Great book.

Ajmillo5 out of 5 starsThis book is a harmonious blend of art and science
Reviewed in Mexico on September 12, 2024Cloudspotting for Beginners is undoubtedly a book that fulfills the promise of its title. It serves as a delightful introduction to the various types of clouds, based on the classification system used by the World Meteorological Organization, which in turn is derived from the classification proposed by Luke Howard in the 19th century. The illustrations are beautifully crafted, with each page featuring a different cloud accompanied by a brief explanation. These descriptions are concise enough to let the illustrations shine, yet informative enough to avoid feeling incomplete. Truly, this book is a harmonious blend of art and science.

Mrs Trellis5 out of 5 starsA beautiful book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2026Gavin Pretor‑Pinney’s Cloudspotting for Beginners is a compact, beautifully illustrated introduction to the art and science of watching clouds, pitched so it works for curious adults as well as children.
It covers the main cloud families (cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and their relatives) with clear, jargon‑light explanations, showing how to recognise them and what kind of weather they usually associate with.
William Grill’s illustrations give it a warm, almost storybook feel, so you learn largely by looking and comparing, rather than wading through dense meteorological charts.
Alongside the basics of how clouds form, there are engaging snippets about unusual phenomena and even clouds on other planets, which keeps it playful rather than textbook‑like.
It’s a short hardback (about 96 pages) and nicely produced, which makes it very giftable and easy to dip into on holiday, or rainy afternoons.
