About the authors

Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges KBE (/ˈbɔːrhɛs/; Spanish: [ˈxorxe ˈlwis ˈborxes] 24 August 1899 - 14 June 1986), was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator, and a key figure in Spanish language literature. His work embraces the "character of unreality in all literature". His best-known books, Ficciones (Fictions) and El Aleph (The Aleph), published in the 1940s, are compilations of short stories interconnected by common themes, including dreams, labyrinths, libraries, mirrors, fictional writers, philosophy, and religion. Literary critics have described Borges as Latin America's monumental writer.

I had the orginal paper back in 1970 worth having now
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2019It is good to have it again after losing my copy. I do miss the painted cover but otherwise nice. The inner artwork is fine, but I think I draw them better. Many interesting topics one doesn't usually find on the subject is covered in this neat little book. I love fantastic animals and they are covered very well even to E.A.Poe's own and Franz Kafka's own made up beasts. A nice bit of esoteric menagerie from all over the world from the lumberwoods of Minnesota to ancient China and beyond. Now if we can just have the second volume if anyone is willing to create it?

Nice book for all ages from Borges.
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2013This is a well-written bestiary for readers of all ages. Borges wrote a great deal magical realism fiction novels, and this non-fiction bestiary based on research he performed as well as his literary interpretation makes this book a very fun experience. It's a book you can pick up and read a random entry that interests you, it's not designed to be a long sit-down read you must commit to sequentially.

Cool but Not What I Expected
Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2021This a interesting book for anyone who has an interest in the historical background of mythical creatures. This is not a collection of stories about these creatures. The book didn’t have many pictures, but lucky Borges’ writing can lend to the creation of mental images. This book isn’t what I expected, but I am happy to add it to my collection of Borges’ books

A great book about monsters and imaginary beings that man throughout history has believed in!
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2014this is a great book about monsters and imaginary beings that people back in history believed in or imagined. I like the author, Jorge Luis Borges, because he has a great knowledge of this subject. This book would make a great addition to a monster fan's source library as it is in mine.

アキサン5 out of 5 starsボルヘスファンの人以外にも。
Reviewed in Japan on December 12,

Reviewed in India on February 18, 2015Its a really good translated version of the original book. I liked it for its size and price. I wish there were some illustrations in his work to get the imagination process accelerated though.
