Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance: A Novel
Purchase options and add-ons
A hilariously filthy tale of sex, crime, and family dysfunction from the brilliantly twisted mind of John Waters, the legendary filmmaker and bestselling author of Mr. Know-It-All.
Marsha Sprinkle: Suitcase thief. Scammer. Master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.
Liarmouth, the first novel by John Waters, is a perfectly perverted “feel-bad romance,” and the reader will thrill to hop aboard this delirious road trip of riotous revenge.

Review
Named a Best Book of the Year by Esquire
"Like any true weirdo, [Waters] seems to consider himself normal. When you read a book like this, you're wandering into a maze of anarchy that is fully legible only to its creator." ―Molly Young, The New York Times
“I couldn't put it down, like a bomb singing me a lullaby. For fans of John's movies, this will be a delicious treat. And for the boring people who don't know what's up, good luck. Marsha is probably the funniest villain I've ever read, and I was cheering for her the whole way through. Like all of John's work, this was true comedy, he has ransacked culture for its absurdity, violence and lunacy, and yet somehow I am happier to be here after going along for the ride.” ―Ottessa Moshfegh, author of My Year of Rest and Relaxation
“There's a glee to Waters' writing. You can imagine him grinning as he pushes certain buttons, daring the audience to come along for the ride.” ―Andrew Limbong, NPR
"Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance is a hopscotching, subversive and full-versive, madcap version of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Though I don’t want to spoil the plot’s twists and twists and twists―it’s a delicious literary strawberry Twizzler embedded with Pop Rocks―by sharing too much detail, the pleasure of the novel is as much Waters’ verbal acrobatics as the increasingly wacky plot, which includes extreme bouncing enthusiasts on a quest, nearly-immaculate conceptions, appendages that spontaneously talk, and cross-species pets." ―Mandana Chaffa, The Chicago Review of Books
"A characteristically Waters-ian phantasmagoria of good, unclean fun . . . [Liarmouth is a] campy, raunchy, surreal story, rife with ribald pleasures." ―Adrienne Westenfeld, Esquire
"Peak John Waters camp." ―Keziah Weir, Vanity Fair
"[Liarmouth is] full of characters and shocking twists―pet face-lifts, trampoline cults, a talking phallus . . . [Marsha Sprinkle] and the other dramatis personae of “Liarmouth” feel like they’ve just walked off a Waters set still in character." ―Tyler Malone, The Los Angeles Times
"Nasty, violent, and obscene? Over-the-top, ricocheting, and hilarious? All of the above describe the self-described Pope of Trash and Filth Elder’s first novel . . . [The] misadventures are absurd, vulgar, bloody, comic, and weirdly sweet as devilish Waters keeps the pedal to the metal . . . and slyly advocates for acceptance and love." ―Donna Seaman, Booklist
“It’s fetishistic and fantastical (there’s a psychic talking penis that puts Tommy Lee’s phallus to shame) but also smart, sarcastic, and satiric. It makes for a sexy, sometimes cringey but mostly very funny read, and like most of his output, it’s boldly un-PC.” ―Lina Lecaro, The Village Voice
"[Waters] has found a new way to channel his singular vision . . . As we follow the characters―mainly the irresistibly awful Marsha Sprinkle―and their schemes, which range from just legal enough to downright criminal, all laced with the Waters brand of hilarious deviancy, it starts to feel like, maybe for the first time, America has actually caught up with Waters." ―Jason Diamond, GQ
"Sleaze is oozing out of every page of Liarmouth, but if you're a JOhn Waters freak . . . that's a very good thing . . . . [A] hilarious ride . . . It's at once entirely otherworldy and intimately familiar." ―Matthew Hays, Gay and Lesbian Review
"Liarmouth is as crazy as anything [Waters] has ever put to film . . .This deliciously trashy novel has everything: adult trampoline enthusiasts, doggy butt lifts, a talking bisexual phallus, and ear masturbation." ―Shannon Carlin, Pitchfork
"A hilariously sleazy story of a con artist in which the villains are good guys, the good guys are silly, and everybody gets down and dirty . . . it’s a must for fans of high camp." ―Publishers Weekly
"The king of campology is back, as gleefully heinous as ever." ―Kirkus Reviews
"Waters writes as sublimely he directs, his switch set somewhere between camp humour and the shockingly obscene, which makes it a thrilling and perverted ride, just so." ―Tammy Moir, Happy Magazine

Prince of Puke Pens Filthy, Obsessive Fever Dream
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2022For those like myself who are fans of John Waters, this novel is a long-awaited treat: the first full-length work of fiction by the Filth Elder himself. Given his track record with filmmaking over the last few decades, this is the closest to a new John Waters movie as we're likely to see. Unleash your imagination and let those mental images gone wild and this book could be your new favorite Waters movie, produced by your own brain, with a limited audience of yourself to enjoy your own casting choices and special effects budget. If your mental movie is a flop, don't blame yourself - it's a John Waters creation, after all.
While this book is overstuffed with gags and rants that we love from Waters, it also has a few rough patches. I loved the evil main character Marsha Sprinkle - she's the best of Desperate Living's Peggy Gravel and Female Trouble's Dawn Davenport, and her every scene is a hoot. Less satisfying is some of the book's supporting cast, including Marsha's daughter's trampoline cult community. A trampoline cult sounds hilarious from the mind of Waters (and to be fair, it sometimes is), but the amount of description Waters offers to the characters' bouncing and shaking can reach levels of deep tedium. (But hey - a fella's gotta make his word count, so cut him some slack.)
If you miss the days of enjoying a new celluloid atrocity from Dreamland, you'll love immersing yourself in Waters' newest fictional world. A teaspoon of patience will help the filth slither down in the most delightful way.

Hit or Miss That Mostly Hits
Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2023I am an absolute enthusiast for Waters' work (whether it be his films, or his literary work), some of this hit really well, and had me laughing out loud or utterly repulsed (though to be fair that's to be expected when it comes to John Waters). Some parts I felt kinda drug on, but it didn't ruin the book for me at all. Can't wait for the film.

Oh my.....
Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022I'm not sure how to rate this book. I am John Waters fan and not shy about the perverted side of life. This reminded me of a Carl Hiaasen with the wacky story line (there is no real plot) times a hundred. I learned more about sexual variations than I ever really needed to know. Wish there was more humor than just a shake your head weirdness.

Hilarious and expectedly irreverent
Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2022I can only quote the best review I have found here where the reviewer said that " everything about this book is wrong."
So true and yet I happily went along for the ride. And if youve ever been to Provincetown MA, you will roar with laughter.

Tired old jokes. Same Waters since the 70s
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2023It reads like somebody's grandpa read a buzzfeed list to try and seem cool at Thanksgiving dinner. Same schtick for decades. Exhausting. Not disgusting, not shocking, not anything we haven't heard dozens of times from Waters. Very disappointed. His edge is long gone and this is a desperate attempt to regain some relevance. Ive been a fan for so long too- that is the only reason I suffered through to the end. Saddens me to say, but pull the plug, please. You will be missed.

I really wanted to like this book
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2022I had such very, very high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. The first few chapters were very funny but then the narrative went downhill quickly. It became very repetitive and quite frankly boring.

brainBoru571 out of 5 starsTedious and badly written. Doesn't live up to the hype
Reviewed in France on June 11, 2022I finished it, but it's time I'll never get back. Water has some nice ideas but not enough to make a book, and he's obliged to rework them over and over. The details of what the bouncers at each encounter just get tedious and feel like padding. It's strained, as though he was forcing himself to get to 11 on a werdometer that only goes to 10. The sex is no worse than Tom Sharpe was writing decades ago, and if that's the pinnacle of his idea of weird sex...yawn. He could have the developed the talking penis a lot more and left out the bouncers. The ending really runs out of steam and just doesn't work.

Goofygirl5 out of 5 starsDon't eat while reading
Reviewed in Japan on October 2, 2022Seriously, this is hilarious, but there were a few times that I almost spewed my food while reading. There are some very bizarre scenes in this -- of course, we expect no less from John Waters, our filth elder, but overall it was a fun ride. I read it in two days and laughed out loud a lot. If you are John Waters fan, you won't be disappointed.
