Atkins-style Greetings Card

It’s impossible not to be drawn into the magic of printing with natural objects such as leaves and flowers, captured in perfect scale and detail.

Anna Atkins’ work was so special because she gave a lot of thought to how the plant specimens were arranged on the paper, to best highlight tiny details.

Lace Purse

I find the results of cyanotype printing on fabric are often even more beautiful and striking than on paper, and it’s great for embellishing with embroidery or, in this case, mimicking hand-made lace.

'Patchwork' Tote Bag

Absolutely no drawing skill is needed here because the aim is to create a grid of different textures, patterns and marks using various opaque media, giving you an idea of how you can use hand-drawn techniques to print with in future.

Hag Stone Jewelery

‘Hag stones’ or ‘witch stones’ are the inspiration for these brooches and pendants. Traditionally, a hag stone is a small stone or pebble with a naturally occurring water-worn hole. They are used as a good luck charm to ward off evil spirits, worries or bad dreams, as they are too big to fit through the hole!

Editorial Reviews

Review

Art Book Review - May 2024
Cyanotype is a simple process that requires little in the way of equipment and uses materials that are basically safe. If you fancy having a go, there is plenty of inspiration here along with very clear instructions and I think you could have a lot of fun for a very modest outlay.

About the Author

Kim Tillyer is a specialist in Textiles and Surface Design studied at Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) / The Northern School of Art and began to explore print techniques that could be applied both to paper and fabric without the need for expensive specialist equipment. Kim’s use of the cyanotype process combines plants and found objects, with hand drawn and photographic elements, to create etherial images on paper and fabric. The addition of embroidered detail is a nod to her textile training and interpretations of “stitch” - to create, mend, secure and embellish.

Kim has a sketchbook in The Sketchbook Project, based in Brooklyn NY. Her sketchbook is mostly cyanotype images using the processes found in the book.

Kim lives in the Lake District in the UK and is a member of Cumbria Printmakers and has also exhibited her work widely throughout the UK.

Kim was born in London and moved to North Yorkshire at the age of 13 when her parents returned to the North York Moors near Whitby.

Kim attended Harrogate Art College for Foundation studies but it was 30 years, 2 children and various disguises later that she eventually returned to Cleveland College of Art (now The Northern School) as a mature student and attained a first-class degree in Textiles and Surface Design.

Kim is now an artist/ illustrator based in the English Lake District. Her use of the cyanotype process combines plants and found objects, with hand drawn and photographic elements well as hand embroidery, to create folk and nature-inspired images on paper and fabric.

In 2020 she appeared on BBC Countryfile demonstrating cyanotype at Dove Cottage and in May 2024 her book "A Beginner’s Guide to Cyanotype" is published in The UK, USA and Australia by Search Press.

Kim also works as a part time bookseller at Sam Read Bookseller in Grasmere, an award winning independent bookshop with a great mail order website ...
