Does It Fart?: The Definitive Field Guide to Animal Flatulence (Does It Fart Series, 1)
Purchase options and add-ons
Dogs do it. Millipedes do it. Dinosaurs did it. You do it. I do it. Octopuses don't (and nor do octopi). Spiders might do it: more research is needed. Birds don't do it, but they could if they wanted to. Herrings do it to communicate with each other.
In 2017 zoologist Dani Rabaiotti's teenage brother asked her a most teenaged question: Do snakes fart? Stumped, Rabaiotti turned to Twitter. The internet did not disappoint. Her innocent question spawned the hashtag #doesitfart and it spread like a noxious gas. Dozens of noted experts began weighing in on which animals do and don't fart, and if they do, how much, how often, what it's made of, what it smells like, and why.
Clearly, the public demands more information on animal farts. Does it Fart? fills that void: a fully authoritative, fully illustrated guide to animal flatulence, covering the habits of 80 animals in more detail than you ever knew you needed.
What do hyena farts smell especially bad? What is a fossa, and does it fart? Why do clams vomit but not fart? And what is a fart, really? Pairing hilarious illustrations with surprisingly detailed scientific explanations, Does it Fart? will allow you to shift the blame onto all kinds of unlikely animals for years to come.

"The topic of flatulence is richer and more varied than readers might expect.... Cheeky illustrations by Ethan Kocak add to the book's general irreverence... Burke, American Scientist

GREAT book! My children are obsessed with it!
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2018I bought this for my 6 year old who is as girly as can be but is currently obsessed with potty humor. I knew that this would be educational and take a scientific look at animal gut functions, however the look on her face when she read the title was priceless. She immediately broke into a fit of giggles and ran into her big sisters (10) room to read it. She's had it for a week now and literally carries it around everywhere she goes. Her and her sister sit in the back of the car reading over the facts of all the animals out loud and laughing over the strange oddities of the animal world. It's also been great for my 10 year old (who does the majority of the reading) because many large scientific terms, words, phrases and classifications are used, so her vocabulary is expanding immensely while reading this book. I always stop explain to her what the big words are when she's reading out loud and I hear her sound something out that she's never read before. This book has definitely turned out to be a great buy! Funny, educational, scientific, and is greatly expanding the vocabulary of my oldest while providing fun and interesting facts about how various animals insides function in relation to their particular diets and environments.

Funny and informative!
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2019How can I explain how awesome this book is? I buy my little brother (okay, he’s 31 and not so little) anything I can that makes me chuckle that doesn’t have a high price tag and I send it directly to him without telling him it’s coming. This has become a tradition and usually, it has something to do with farts. First it was a Magical Creatures farting coloring book, then an essential oil named ‘Monkey Farts,’ (he loves monkeys) then this, and following this, a book about wild animals farting in the wilderness. Basically, he now has a fart collection I’ve sent him randomly throughout the past few years. He recently told me he is always flustered when dates come over and he has to explain why he has so many references to farting all over his condo (I call this a big sister win!) Now that he has a girlfriend, I plan on sending many more fart themed items to make sure she’s cool enough for my little brother.
As for the book: it’s informative, funny, and based in whatever science exists on the subject, so it’s a definite recommend from me! My brother brought it to my house for Thanksgiving and read us some of it after telling the story of how he comes home to get his mail and often questions what the hell and who in the world would send him such ridiculous items (he is now sure it’s always me, but now our mom and dad have gotten in on the fun too....hahahaha.)

Cute!
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018Does it Fart is great! It’s pretty serious in its tone, but the illustrations are pretty cute and outright funny (see my pic). I think this is going to be a really good gift for my niece and nephew. They’re pretty smart so I like that there are bigger words in there (malodorous), and some actual scientific facts instead of a bunch of fart jokes. There’s even a section on the mythical Unicorn- but the conclusion (I’ll leave it to you to read it) is based on science. I was surprised to find out my favorite animal (well, actually this is not a mammal so to speak, but I digress), the octopus, does not in fact fart at all. For those of you who remember the good old meme of the honey badger, it is listed in this book. I don't know why amazon is saying I haven't received the book yet though... uhh, I have had it for days guys!!

Inquiring minds need to know
Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2018You don't have to be eight years old or even a boy to have in inner eight year old boy. Although fart jokes rate highly among their literary favorites, they're still new in the world, eager to learn, and untrammeled by conventions of propriety. The introduction says "... Dani was asked by a family member whether snakes farted ." Although the inquirer's demographic was not specified, one is free to conjecture.
But the thing is, when you ask a scientist a question that ought to have a ready answer and no answer is ready at hand, you've just set a powerful force in motion: a scientist's curiosity. Although Dani had no answer herself, she know who would. Thus began the journey, aided by experts and knowledgeable citizen scientists, to understand flatulence across the metazoan taxa.
It's a fascinating read. In answer to the title's question: some don't, some do, and some doers put it to good use. That larva that launches its feces far enough to misdirect predators, for example, farts for dear life. In at least one case, I questioned whether the gas was flatulence proper, or a release affectionately known as "queefing." That one detail does nothing to discourage the eight year old boy in me, though. It's a delightful read.

Funny, engaging, and approachable science
Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2018So I've bought both books by these authors (imaged above) and I couldn't be happier. They're short books that are full of funny illustrations, quippy passages, and just a ton of quirky science. If you like fun facts, these books are your El Dorado. If you're interested in science, these books give you a tour de force of biology by exploring areas that we often talk about, but don't always think about.
Another cool feature of these books is that they've given me a way to get my nieces and nephews (aged 4 to 18) engaged in biology. They enjoy these books about as much as I do. Between the funny topics, the illustrations, and the interesting tid-bits, these books make for a good way to talk with them about science and the many different ways artists, researchers, and writers can engage with such topics.
Ultimately, I highly recommend these books and hope there's more on the way!

Fantastic for all ages but particularly for kids
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018Fantastic! I purchased this book for my 4-year-old and 12-year-old sons. They LOVE it! My four year old has learned to read the word "yes," "no," and "maybe" thanks to this book and asked to read it at least once a week at bedtime. He has learned about species he had never heard of before and been prompted to ask a lot of great questions. My 12-year-old takes the book, curls up on his bed, and reads it front to back while regularly laughing under his breath and shouting "did you know (insert animal) farts??!" and "what is a (insert animal name)? It's so great. I think it should be in every classroom and in every home. It is fun and interesting on its own and, as all great science should, leads to more questions and exploration.

The perfect book for anyone who loves science and laughter!
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2018The perfect book for anyone who loves science and laughter! Because it's about farting, it's hard not to laugh in general. Like bottom of the belly laughter but it's also very factually accurate so it's perfect for the nerd in your life who likes a good laugh, aka my boyfriend! We are going to buy another copy for our 3 year old niece because she is obsessed with pooping and farting. This is the perfect spin to add value to those folks in our lives who love the bathroom humor lol. It is honestly pretty informational. This is the perfect gift for anyone - old or young - who still loves a good ole fart joke + some information too.

That Mysterious Finnish Programmer5 out of 5 starsEntertaining and informative
Reviewed in Germany on November 16, 2021Almost everyone likes fart humour. It must be some sort of a primitive aspect of humanity - although, as the book explains in more detail, the same traits could even be found in our ancestors.
The book doesn't solely frolic on the entertaining aspects though, but also presents interesting bits of scientific information, to balance things out. You might even learn something from this book, as unlikely as it might ever sound
For ten euros, not a bad choice for a conversation piece and casual entertainment. Very suitable even for a toilet book to read during sessions on the loo (although I advise you not put this book in the toilet bowl itself, as it isn't waterproof)
