From the Back Cover
"Critter Tales is a must-read for every would-be homesteader. Tate is realistic but sympathetic about the trials that face folks new to animal husbandry in a farm setting. Readers follow along as she and her husband jump through the emotional hurdle of killing beloved chickens, figure out how to use water guns to train goats, and build innovative straw-bale shelters for pigs. Learning from Tate's mistakes means you won't be fated to repeat them, but at the same time the author's engaging photos and stories will make you yearn to create critter tales too. Before you know it, you may be juggling livestock guardian dogs, chemical-free honeybees, and guineas of your very own."
--Anna Hess, author of The Weekend Homesteader
"With witty tone and honest words, Leigh shares tales that will excite and educate any future homesteader. It's like sitting across the table from a friend as you catch up on the latest news in her life. For anyone who's dreamed of transforming a small plot of land into a thriving homestead full of life and possibility, this is a must-read book."
--Angela England, author of Backyard Farming on an Acre (More or Less) and Founder of Homestead Bloggers Network
"Leigh Tate does it again! In the tradition of her earlier book, 5 Acres and a Dream, Critter Tales is a wonderful collection of lessons learned, this time in the realm of homestead livestock. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is thinking about adding animals to their homestead as well as those who just love to read the stories of an authentic fellow traveler. Some people are natural born story tellers and Leigh Tate is one those people. "

Good stories abour REAL life on a farm
Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2016Great book of farm stories - better for older kids, but if pre-read, (so you know which parts to skip over that might be "scary" you could read them to younger children. Life on a farm is not always pretty, but Leigh writes very good stories about all her animals.

A Fantastic Followup
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2015If you read and liked Leigh Tate's first book, 5 Acres and a Dream The Book, I can save you some time. Buy this book because you will love it. It's more of what you'd expect from the author -- more quality information about homesteading explained in a clear manner, sprinkled with just the right amount of personality.
I loved this book and its focus on farm animals for the homestead. It's broken down into sections, each dedicated to a specific animal, things like chickens or goats or bees. I did not read the chapters in order, and you don't have to.
The writing is clear and (brutally) honest. The author shares research, information, and experience--including the successes and the failures, the happiness and the sadness that comes with raising animals. I cannot recommend this book enough for someone interested in raising animals. Read this book first and save yourself some time, energy, and frustration.
The sections dedicated to chickens and goats are the largest, which makes sense because that's where the author has the most experience (as long longtime readers of the author's blog will know). That said, I found plenty of helpful information in every chapter.
A final note: This is a book lover's book, written and crafted with care by someone who has done the real work. It contains over a hundred photos showing the animals and their environment. The resource listing, end notes, table of content, and index are exhaustive.

and reading her stories is rather like having that neighbor you wish you had
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2015Leigh Tate not only shares delightful critter tales but invites us along the learning journey she has made as she and her husband Dan work to become self-sufficient on their five acres. My husband and I are starting on that journey, too; and reading her stories is rather like having that neighbor you wish you had, who cares about all the same things you do, sharing stories at the kitchen table. She writes with wisdom and practicality and heart. And she closes each section of the book with a summation of what she's learned about each animal and providing for its care on a homestead evolving toward self-sufficiency. These summative chapters can be gold, even for homesteaders who are already raising this animal or that one. For instance, at our place we also have a small herd of Kinder goats that we are going to be learning to feed from our land instead of from Tractor Supply and the very nice fellow who sells us alfalfa hay. Leigh has done batches of research in that area, and we'll be drawing from all she and Dan have learned as we begin planting food crops, including trees, for our goats.

One of the best books about personal experience with animals!
Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2015As a loyal 5 Acres and A Dream blog follower, I knew a little about the stories in this book. I was delighted to read the deeper stories and see what it was like to live through them! Leigh Tate has a very easy style of writing so that it feels informative without assuming too much about the reader. I found myself nodding my head while I read. If you are thinking about keeping animals, or like me, already have animals--Critter Tales is a must-have addition to your library. Her focused approach to a life with animals is a model that provides much needed mentoring to the rest of us who didn't grow up on a farm!

Entertaining and Informative
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2016This is a wonderful book filled with entertaining stories of homestead life as well as informative information on the pros and cons of raising various critters. Even though I am not an official homesteader, my husband and I have been considering raising some chickens, and Leigh's research and personal experiences were very helpful...much more than picking up chicks at the co-op and throwing feed on the ground! I highly recommend both Critter Tales as well as Leigh's other book 5 Acres and Dream the Book.

Another excellent book by Leigh Tate
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2016Another excellent book by Leigh Tate!
More 'Reality' than 'Romance'... it is a refreshingly honest view focuses on keeping homestead animals, both the joys and the heartbreaks.
A very good intro for those contemplating 'growing' their own protein.
5 Acres & A Dream:The Book was excellent too, with a wider range view of homesteading in general.
