I loved it
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2024Sad. Very affecting, especially the two short descriptions of the younger brother’s misery. I’ll carry these with me as long as I live.

lol
Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2015this book is a riot. grotesque, bizarre, extremely funny. very much over the top. and yet, there is some philosophical depth implicit in it as well. one can tell that donleavy was probably a fan of henry miller's writings and in my opinion he exceeds him. i found the book quite inspirational. an excellent read to chase away the blues.

He skewers the idiotic, the banal and the pattern of NY life
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2014Donleavy is the master of criticism of our pompous presumptions. He skewers the idiotic, the banal and the pattern of NY life. He makes it a pleasure to shed a tear in sorrow, immediately to be followed by guffaws of contempt for our own weaknesses. Love it.

Beyond the Pale
Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2012Hard to review this since my eyes are full of tears from laughing. I own all of Donleavy's books and would rate this his best. Yes, even better than "The Ginger Man". (Incidentally, there is a non-fiction work "The Making(?) of the Ginger Man", which should be read right before curling up with any Donleavy's novels.

AFM5 out of 5 starsA Fairytale of New York

Sebastian Dangerfield morphs into Cornelius Christian - and he's still getting away with it!
Also interesting historically, as the Pogues used the title on their Christmas No 1.
