About the author

Greetings!
Thanks for your interest in my books....whether on thrifty lifestyles, self-reliance skills, country living, fencing, preparedness, or hypnotism. We lived in the rural Ozark backcountry for two decades, raising livestock and producing virtually all our own food (except for bananas and coffee) -- so I write from a hand-on, been-there-done-that perspective.
After a hiatus and multiple life-changes, I'm back at the keyboard and books are arriving on Amazon! At the same time, I'm completing my doctorate in nursing...so expect more health books, as well. My heart is still in the country and involved in preparedness, though, so there will be more of that as time goes by. Feel free to contact me with your questions or suggestions, through Auctoritas Publishing, by emailing me c/o editor@auctoritaspublishing.com.

Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2011I loved this book but wish it had more instructions for homemade solar appliances. I put black plastic trash bags around clean 5-gallon plastic buckets, bungied a piece of clear plastic over the top and it makes a great hot water heater. I am anxious to try it in cooler weather.

Valuable Information
Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2011This is one of these books everyone should read, even if you think roughing it is a fancy hotel. The truth is disasters occur and we all need to be able to survive without basic public services. You can be unprepared and suffer, or be prepared. The best part of this book is the information on what not to buy. Some products are not worth the money and others have pitfalls when the power is off. She shared some information about solar power that I had not thought about. So even if you are someone thinking of reducing your dependence on the power company, this book is a good first step in your planning.

Basic Information
Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2005I may have rated to harshly as I don't have a problem with living without electricity. Some folks I have talked with think it is impossible or just to weird. They won't be convinced of anything in the book. Those who want to know why the Amish live without electricity may find a few answers to their questions-as well has how they do it. I would have liked more photos of equipment the Amish do use and explanation of how they modify motors and machines to work without being on the grid.

20 Years out of Date, its a big advertisement for the Lehmans Non-ElectricCatalog. Just get the catalog
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2013This book is basically one big advertisement for the Lehmans non-electric catalog... so you might as well just read the catalog. As far as any of the 'technology' in the book regarding battery chargers (AA / AAA ) etc... they are all 20 years out of date. Rechargable battery technology (NiMH) has come a long long way since this book was written. If you can get the book for a few bucks, ok, but don't spend any real money on it. If you want really good free education on energy and power and how you can HAVE your electricity and LOVE IT when NO ONE ELSE has power then check out all of the free classes at [...] (and it does not have much to do with Solar, it covers basically everything but solar, but it was an easy to remember name I used for all of the radio shows and podcasts I have done). Enjoy
