Son Volt/Jason Isbell@ Pearl Street in Northampton, MA

Here are a few pics from the Son Volt show. Jason Isbell, formerly of Drive By Truckers opened with alot of new stuff that was actually quite good, sort of a mix between Ryan Adams and older Allman Bros. He did most of his songs on electric with a few acoustic numbers thrown in, such as the hauntingly somber "Dress Blues".

The stage at Pearl Street (sorry about the bad lighting). This is taken from right side by the huge speaker system. Thank God I had my Hearo's in my ears.

Jason Isbell opened and really got some southern hoots and hollers out of the NoHo crowd.

Jason in a moment of blurry rockage.. gotta love the "indie" mag style shot on this one, blurry is artsy?

Jay took the stage by storm. Here he does "Bandages and Scars" mid-set.

Possibly the best if not the only Asian keyboard player in Alt-Country, Mr. Gary Deborja lays on some organ goodness..

Jay And Chris Masterson meld together for a scorching rendition of "Drown". I caught at least 3 people singing along with me, word for word, which managed to elicit a wink from bassist Andrew Deplantis ( Jay didn't smile, but kept busy with this guitar licks).

Hey all - am brand new to the community, looks sweet!
Have a question and would love some advice - am starting to play banjo in a rock/old country/bluegrass/folk/etc band. other instruments so far = drum kit and acoustic guitar through an amp.
Any tips for amplifying banjo?? So far have seen just a mike on the banjo, which I don't think would work so well with a kit in the background, and an elaborate modification of a guitar pickup. My banjo is pretty low end and I wouldn't care too much about any slight messing up a pickup might cause.

Would love your help! Thanks so much!
Heather

X-posted to Bluegrass USA.

A very Smoggy update from St. Paul Pioneer Press

The Smog lifts and (hooray!), it's 'Another Fine Day'ROSS RAIHALAIt only took eight years, but Minneapolis supergroup Golden Smog finally has a new album to follow 1998's "Weird Tales." It's called "Another Fine Day," and it's due in stores July 18.
With 15 songs sprawled across 64 minutes, it's well worth the wait. Recorded both in Spain and Minneapolis, the disc features songs written by Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy and three Jayhawks — Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Kraig Johnson — along with contributions from the group's Chicago correspondent, Jeff Tweedy (probably the most famous of the bunch now, thanks to Wilco's rise to worldwide acclaim).
Other guests include drummers Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Linda Pitmon (Zuzu's Petals, Steve Wynn). Paco Loco, a Spanish producer known for his work with Josh Rouse, and Polara's Ed Ackerson produced, with Loco's wife, Muni, kicking in some sweet vocals.
The group has aired some of the album's tracks in recent live shows, including "5-22-02" (sunny, yet wistful pop), "Beautiful Mind" (a noisy, sprawling epic), "You Make It Easy" (the piano-led album opener) and "Corvette," a song originally written by Perlman for a car commercial that, it should be noted, wouldn't sound out of place on an old Cars album.
No official word yet on a full Golden Smog tour, although a local gig and a handful of other shows are likely. Those with some extra frequent-flier miles may want to check out Louris' 10-date solo tour of Spain, kicking off March 23.
Tweedy fans, meanwhile, have plenty of other new stuff to keep them occupied until July. He joins the Seattle-based Minus 5 for the band's new self-titled disc (aka "The Gun Album"). This time around, leaders Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck enlisted more than a dozen other guests, including the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, the Posies' Ken Stringfellow and John Wesley Harding.
Tweedy's other side project, Loose Fur, returns with its second disc March 21. Dubbed "Born Again in the USA," it again pairs Tweedy with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and alt-rock producer Jim O'Rourke for a disc that's more song-oriented than the band's 2003 debut. Don't believe Tweedy's recent claim, though, that the disc is prog rock — even if the liner notes feature some of the ugliest band portraits you've ever seen.
Finally, Wilco's spring tour doesn't have a local date yet, but tickets are still available fo

Well. it didn't all copy, but that last part was just about a show in Iowa. So, Yay!!! I can't wait!!

BENEFIT SHOWS SCHEDULED - Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, Bottle Rockets and others

Chicago Shows to Benefit Gary Schepers

Behind the public and well-known faces of musicians and bands of Chicago's vibrant and wildly diverse music scene there is a community of creative and dedicated people who make it all possible. Theirs are names you will likely never know and whose faces don't make the glossy magazines, but whose contributions to the music we all love are irreplaceable.

If you have been a regular concert-goer in Chicago during the past twenty plus years, odds are strong that you have benefited from the ubiquitous and experienced ears of Gary Schepers behind the soundboard. He has been the big man with the big voice and the good heart working the sound at Lounge Ax, the Abbey Pub, Empty Bottle, Martyr's, Fitzgerald's, Schuba's and every other venue you can think of. He's been the sound man for Eleventh Dream Day, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Material Issue, and John Parish. In short, Gary is one of THE unsung people that help keep our city the vital and accessible music scene that it is.

Recently, Gary was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and is spending the holiday season in a hospital room recovering and getting treatments. Like many people in the music industry, Gary is without health insurance. To help defray his mounting medical bills, there will be a series of benefit concerts featuring just a tiny percentage of the artists he has worked with over the years. The speed and ease with which these fundraisers have come together, and the breadth of talent participating in them, is testimony to the appreciation and high regard held for him within the community of musicians that have performed in this city.

From the Bloodshot perspective, Gary was responsible for the sound at our first showcases at Lounge Ax and Empty Bottle. He handled our neophyte, multi-band nights of chaos with a serene, unflappable manner. He never let on if he was bothered by a bunch of screwballs learning how to put on a show on the fly and on his watch. Over the years he's taught us when to worry, when to yell and when to just enjoy the moment.
I'm new here, and thought i'd try to liven things up by asking questions...

First, how many of you are musicians yourselves? Songwriters? What do you play? Are you in a band?

Me, i play guitar, and drums a bit. I write songs some, but not at a very good pace. Not in a band, but i do open mic nights when i can.

Next, what are you listening to these days? What new discovery can you not put down?

My current heavy rotation is The Band. Can't get enough of 'em! I'm also on a heavy Neko Case kick (like always), and back on the James McMurtry thing...
