I'm an Alan Rickman fan from Germany and yesterday I made an attempt at translating the German article xena_2001de posted to this community. Hopefully, it will help those of you English-speaking folk to understand the article's content better. If not, please tell me so, so that I might have a slight insight on what my translation qualities are^^

“I’m doing my best”

This voice is remarkable: Alan Rickman talks very quiet, yet the sonorous, velvety sound of his words immediately fill every room – as if some hidden bass boxes would amplify them. A physiological phenomenon, says the 60-year old Briton. “I have a nearly unnatural, cave-like oral cavity. The sound that I produce strikes atop the palate and thus is amplified like in some big sounding board.” But this voice has so much more to offer: something ironical, astute and very British. Even when he stays silent, he appeals to our innermost – with this deep, secretive gaze and that very powerful presence that even makes movies in which he remains a supporting actor, to Alan Rickman movies. It was the same in 1988, in his first appearance on cinema: as the diabolic terrorist Hans Gruber in the action classic “Die hard” he plays the role of the evil adversary of the do-gooder Bruce Willis. Anyway: at that time Willis cashed some million dollar payments already, whereas Rickman, a theatre actor, hardly left any traces concerning the film budget.

Nevertheless Alan was introduced to the world’s stage. As a late bloomer though, since he has already been in his 40s when his career rapidly went uphill. Three years later, Kevin Costner as the popular archer in “Robin Hood” could only marvel at how Alan Rickman accomplished to give the sheriff of Nottingham the charisma of a cunning ratter. As a full-bearded, deeply revolting villain, Rickman enchanted the audience with a lunatic’s derisively piercing gaze. For that he has been rewarded with the famous British Academy Award.

Such a perfect villain suits the world of Harry Potter well. Since 2001 Rickman belongs to the cinema inventory, also amongst the younger generation. Kids possibly don’t love him, the dark, powerful Snape who always stalks the hallways of Hogwarts – gloomy gaze, robe billowing. He scares them. And he fascinates them. His role’s most special secret the actor doest want to give away, out of respect for the kids: “They believe in this story like they believe in Santa Clause – and this myth shouldn’t be dischanted.”

For the German director Tom Tykwer Rickman proved to be a genuinely lucky selection. When he was searching for an actor for his monumental movie “The perfume – A murderer’s history”, who would appear to the viewer of being strong enough to actually hunt down Grenuille (Ben Wishaw), only one actor came to his mind: Alan Rickman. “He’s got this powerful presence”, says Tykwer. “He is commanding and intelligent – you trust him as the tradesman Antoine Richis to be a serious component to Grenouille.” In addition the actor agitates in the 18th century era as if he was being at home. “He masters all of the Mannerisms of that time as if he’s always lived in his costumes”, Tykwer swarms. “He can administer it like no other.”
That, Rickman already proved in the Jane-Austin-production “Sense and sensibility”(1995). As the lovely colonel Brandon in Ang Lees emotional drama he woos for Marianne’s love alias Kate Winslet. The English gentlemen’s suit suits him perfectly. To those who know Rickman as the noble charmer in finest twine or as the black cloak wearing tyrant it’s impossible to imagine him playing the average type of guy. Rickman, impersonating someone you’d pass by without recognising? Exactly this role he plays in his new film ”Snow Cake” (Start: 02.11.). His Alex is silent, lonesome and very sensitive. “In movies, men ought to be men, and women... above all ought to be young”, Rickman reckoned while laughing loudly. But then he adds more seriously: “Mostly you aren’t asked to play the emotional side of yourself or the character you play.” The script itself has fascinated him because, while reading, he didn’t know what each next page would bring with it, just like the viewers wouldn’t while viewing the film scenes. With this British-Canadian production he expected a small, nice author’s cinema. As he saw the act for the first time on big screen, he was surprised how epic it turned out to be. “This evening inside the cinema was great because I had the feeling a story has been told to the visitors to which each and every one of them needed to find their own access. Every now and then during the different film passages I could hear someone laughing out of the dark corners.”

It’s the silent moments in which you can observe how thoughts and emotions are changing that make the movie something special. Of course, Alex is not as boring as we might think in the beginning for he has a deep grief and an ungovernable anger embedded within him. Only when he meets Linda (Sigourney Weaver) – an autist with her very own view on life – he finds a way to confront himself with the demons of his past. Ethical courage and the fight against prejudices are the movie’s great themes, whereas the small things are those that stand out. “You don’t feel any pressure, at no time you have the feeling something needs to happen”, Rickman says about the movie. “Being the audience you should just sit and let what happens take effect.”

Rickman always wanted to be a story-teller with the audience listening to him rather than staring at him mindlessly. Yet right after his first cinema success he was aware of the fact that he was a cart horse – also on stage. For example as he played “Hamlet” back in theatre he knew that many only watched the show to see him because he’d become a star. “Then again, it did incite me and calm me, too, because it meant that there was something I was doing right.”

His stage debut the son of Irish and Welsh ancestry had in his school’s assembly hall in London – his father had died when he was eight years old. From then on he continued taking up a role in every play until he graduated. Then he hesitated. After so many years of participating in school theatre he could actually have been convinced of his talents but he also liked to draw and therefore it seemed more reasonable to him to finish an education as a graphic designer at the Royal College of Art. But he’d never intended to give up on acting totally: he became a member of the Court Drama Group, an amateur theatre group.

At rehearsals in the mid 60s he got to know Rima Horton, his early love with whom he’s still living together – not married and without children. For his longtime companion theatre plays remained a hobby. Nowadays she’s a tutor and local politician in Chelsea. But Alan Rickman never really gave up on his dream of the big stage. Turning 26 he finally had the courage to give up on his job to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. “When you’re young, you simply throw yourself into doing something but the older you get, the more defensive you approach a subject”, Rickman says retrospectively. The confidence of youth changes with the years, he says and with a smirk compares himself with saint Sebastian: “Meanwhile, many arrows have come to stuck inside of me.” Means: He had to get a lot of stick.

Rickman lives for the theatre. As Vicompte de Valmont in “Dangerous Liasons”,1987 he managed the great leap from London to New York Broadway. With that, not only the whole theatre world had their eyes on him but Hollywood, too. The first movie offer followed immediately, his role in “Die hard”. He once more had a double success upon the stages of London and New York in 2001/2002 with “Private Lives”. “I love to make movies, bit I guess I’m better at stage performing.”

The confident “Labour”-adherent has a critical view on film-business, too: “It should not only be about commercialisation”, Rickman quarrels with the advertising strategies of the glamour-branch. He personally doesn’t need the big red-carpet-appearance but rather stays reluctant. “I don’t want to make myself too important”, he declares. What is more interesting to him is political engagement. During the last year, he stage-managed “My name is Rachel Corrie”, a theatre play that deals with the true story of an American peace activist. Rachel Corrie has been knocked down by a bulldozer in Gaza in 2003. Alan Rickman was very moved by the reactions of the younger audience: “Nobody took sides for Israel or Palestine but everyone was impressed by the peace activist’s courage.”

His political awareness has been sharpened early: There’s a picture from his childhood still remaining in his head: his parents, standing on kitchen chairs, attaching “Elect Labour”-posters on the window’s interior. That coined him, although nowadays he prefers to leave the professional aspects to that subject to his wife. He supports organisations such as amnesty international.

When he decides to play a role, it’s important to him that its character and message that should be transmitted must be within his own conception. Alan Rickman emanates amazing calm and self-assurance – but he also experienced those days full of insecurity and self-doubt. It often remains difficult for him to find this inner balance which he needs to be able to work very well. “There’s no button I can push to recall the same effort from the day before.” He needs to start to search within himself every time. “At those times I think such an actor like me should just wear a t-shirt, saying: “Believe it or not, I’m doing my best."

An introduction...it's love, actually! :)

Catchy title, ain't it? :) anyway...i am new here, decided to introduce myself. I'm Pink, a 20 year old gal from Romania who has had a crush over Mr. Rickman for quite a while now. I have my ups and dowsn when it comes to my crushes, i am not consistent, so this means that i can't stick to only one guy for too long. The same thing happened to Alan, he stepped back to no. 2 while other guys conquered no.1 but last night i re-watched some scenes from HP4 and thought: 'hmm...SNAPE!!' (i have had snape-ish fantasies ever since the first Snape shot in the first movie :D) and went to my Alan folder and re-saw 'In demand' as well and that clicqued everything back into place :) Also, seeing 'Snow Cake' tonight and drooling him and his voice didn't help either.

Anyway...i wanted to start off by putting some pictures from the 'love actually' premieres in London, Rome and Paris. Maybe they were posted before, but...you can't have too much Alan, can you?

And no, these aren't the ones from that czech site ;o) These are my own"Daily Dozen" style screenshots. Freshly made.

People who know my "Daily Dozen" grabs also knows I like to focus on pictures where Alan is smiling. And so I did this here as well. But, without giving away too much of the plot, don't let it fool you. It's a deeply moving movie, very touching, but not an especially happy one.

It's a GREAT movie though. Highly recommendable. Available (on preorder) at Amazon.co.uk in Region 2. Probably already available in Region 1, but what do I care? ;o)

And yes, these shots are from a DivX copy I happened to get hold of. Once I get the real DVD (in february... WAAAH I WANT IT NOW!!!) I'll probably update these shots with real DVD ones, but until then, this can tide me over.
