Today I watched the Backrooms movie. The movie not only recreates an eerie uncanny liminal space, but also tells a suspenful psychological horror story.

Clark (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a divorced alchoholic failed architect who feels that he's stuck running an unsucessful cheap furniture store. He attends therapy session with Mary (played by Renate Reinsve), who has her childhood trauma. One day Clark discovered that his store basement was connected to a space, which looked like an abandoned office space made without actually knowing what an office was like in reality. He kept going back there abd became obsessed. After him missing his session and leaving an omnious call, Mary went to his store to look for him and gets trapped there.

The visual design and music were very good. The yellow fluroscent walls, the subtly wrong furnitures, the endless doors, chutes and rooms were uncanny. The music and sound effects was unsettling and enhanced the scenes. I kept my eyes shut during the gory scenes, but luckily there weren't many. I also find the use of found footage very effective.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve are really steller. They make the characters feel grounded and sympathetic.  Chiwetel Ejiofor sold me the change of Clark throughout the movie, while Renate Reinsve's restrained performance fits her role well. The supporting cast is good too.

Although I haven't watched the original Youtube series nor the trailer, I find the movie easy to follow, though I'm sure I may have missed the nuance. I really like how it doesn't try to explain away the mystery of the Backrooms, but throwing out more and more questions.

I have just found out the director is only 20. It's really impressive! I look forward to his next work.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Small Ripe Banana
  • 1 Large Egg
  • Toppings if desired such as berries and a light drizzle of pure maple syrup
Directions:

  1. Peel and break apart banana into small pieces and place in ramekin. Add egg. Mash together with a fork until batter is fairly consistent. Small chunks are ok but try and mash up all large chunks. The more ripe the banana the easier it is. Discard fork (it is contaminated with raw egg so please do not use to eat off of until washed).
  2. Place ramekin in microwave and cook on high for 1 minute or until egg mixture is solid and has an internal temperature of 160 degrees.
  3. Top with berries and maple syrup if desired.

Everyone know to stay home at this time, except you. Now you're lost, stranded in an alien world.

Why do you travel in such a dangerous time?

1. Desperation. You need to reach your loved one before they took the last breath. You have to send for help to save your people. The need is bigger than the risk, as you have thought.
2. Curiosity. You want to know what exists beyond your home village. You have heard the call of the wild.
3. Forsaken. You're betrayed and abandoned in the wilderness. You're exiled and drawn away from any shelters.
4. Ambition. Rumours and ancient manuscripts spoke of potential award in the other worlds. You believe that you can master the way.
5. Ignorance. You thought you have enough protection. You thought it was safe. Now you paid the price.
6. Abducted. Some beings took a fancy of you. They lure you away for their purposes.

Where do you find yourself?

1. A dark sun dappled forest that seemed to stretch into the horizons. It doesn't like you.
2. A cosmic library that holds books in every forms and languages.
3. An underwater crystal city, where people like you are bound to serve the water spirit
4. Ruins of a lost dead civilization. Burnt cathedral guarded by clockwork angels
5. A dungeon with undecipherable inscription on the wall. Roars and screams are approaching.
6. An overgrown abandoned palace flying in the night sky
7. The land of lost, where everything lost eventually find themselves in
8. A sleeping deity's dream. Tread lightly lest you topple a world.

Good luck. You'll need it.

  • 1½ cups rice
  • ½ cup barley
  • ⅛ cup candied lotus seeds
  • ⅛ cup almonds
  • ⅛ cup seedless raisins
  • ⅛ cup fresh peanuts
  • ⅛ cup large candied cherries
  • 8 strips of citron sliced very thin
  • 1½ cups sugar

Cook rice and barley together in about one quart of water.

Take a very large deep bowl or mold that has plenty of surface; arrange the eight precious fruits and nuts in some kind of pretty design at the bottom of the bowl. Now pour the rice and barley, which have been drained, into the bowl, and steam for at least an hour, until well cooked.

Turn out with design on top and serve with sauce.

1. Stay home in foggy or rainy days. Be quiet during the new moon. Remember the constellation until you imprint it in your heart. It's the first tell you're on the wrong path.
2. Pay respect to shrines before crossing any bridges. Bring a torch no matter day or night. My neighbour once crossed the bridge in hurry - no one has ever seen them again.
3. Don't pick up money or food on the streets. The spirits use these as bait to abduct unsuspected people.
4. If you see graffiti or notes with strange wordings not in any known languages, close your eyes, turn away and forget about them. Don't try to copy them.
5. Block your ears when crossing the forest. Don't try to listen to its sound, no matter what they promise.
6. Don't make any sudden movement in the meadow. Sing and hit a bell when crossing it. Surprised spirits have a bad temper.

A setting premise inspired by books and blogs I have recently read:

In this world, people travel without the certainty that they'll arrive in their destination. It's easy to unknowingly go through the rifts between our reality and other worlds. Beware of fog, bridges and doors that appear suspiciously new. Rituals, customs and charms are developed to secure safe travel. People watch the sky to ensure that the sun, the moon and the stars are alight during their travel. Eclipse is a disaster as the supernatural roam freely in the land.

Some people dedicate themselves to navigate the unknown. The risk is great, but the potential reward is huge: magic items, creatures that thought to be mythical, knowledge beyond imagination.. Siilarly minded people group together to develop theory and practicalities to travel. The dreamers project themselves into the dreamland. The gmers play games that pass from the old to go to the the fey realm. The faithful throw themselves to saints and deities for blessings.

The astral sea is the realm of collective unconsciousness. Some powerful psychics's imprints re so strong that they trap unsuspecting travellers. They can only get free if they resolve their unfinished business. Powerful kingdoms compete to build ships to navigate the sea.
