And Maria took the chance. With a hand either side of Sarah Jane’s face, she brought her lips softly but firmly against the older woman’s.
‘Happy New Year’s rang out all around them as Maria felt Sarah Jane stiffen under her touch. Afraid she had read all the signs wrong over the last year she had returned from America as a graduate, she pulled herself away, already feeling the tears prick her eyes. And then the unthinkable happened. Maria felt Sarah Jane’s firm and supportive arm around her waist, her other hand had come up to the tangle that was Maria’s mass of black curls. And with another second, she looked into those deep green-hazel eyes and realized that she had always been right. The love shining back from them was unmistakable.
Sarah Jane leant forward, maintaining her firm grip around Maria’s waist, and kissed the young woman as softly as she would break. Maria eased into the kiss, gently grazing the lips she would come to know so well, her arms wrapped tightly around the woman she had always loved. They stood together, arms entwined and foreheads resting against each other as the room slowly became aware of their intimacy. Quite suddenly, the whole world seemed to applaud. Clyde wolf whistled and added ‘Get a room!’ Luke somehow managed to suppress the urge to pat his mother on the back, but was visibly anxious too, and even Alan Jackson, his arms around his new wife was beaming.
‘And about time too,’ he smiled, noting the tears welling up in his daughters eyes. ‘Maybe now she’ll stop pining away,’ he added for the benefit of Sarah Jane.
‘Dad!’ Came the indignant response, but Sarah Jane had given Maria’s arm a gentle squeeze to subtly attract her attention. Leaning into Sarah Jane’s embrace she could hear the older woman whisper in her ear. ‘You too?’
Maria pulled away to look into Sarah Jane’s eyes, scarcely able to believe that the woman she adored might have been pining away herself. With a tiny nod, she again brought her lips to Sarah Jane’s, with considerably more fervour than before, and feeling Sarah Jane respond with the same hungry desire, the two women made their feeble excuses to the guests and hurriedly left Luke and Clyde’s party for the privacy of Sarah Jane’s home.
(Where they lived happily ever after.)
