Trifid Nebula Tour

NASA is celebrated Hubble's 36th anniversary with a stunning new look at the Trifid Nebula, a star-forming region about 5,000 light-years away. First imaged in 1997, Hubble revisited this scene nearly 30 years later with sharper vision. The image reveals a structure nicknamed the “Cosmic Sea Slug,” including a jet from Herbig-Haro 399, showing how young stars actively shape their surroundings. Hubble Senior Project Scientist, Dr. Jennifer Wiseman takes us on a tour of this beautiful image.

Wispy, nebulous clouds extend from the lower-left of the image. At the top and right the dark background of space can be seen through the sparse nebula. Along the left and in the corner are many layers of brightly-colored gas and dark, obscuring dust. A cluster of small, bright blue stars in the same corner expands out across the image. Many much smaller stars cover the background.

35 Years of Images

Celebrate Hubble's 35th anniversary with a countdown of images the observatory captured over its lifetime, one for each year in orbit.

Against the dark background of space, pale, misty clouds of gas and dust are liberally sprinkled with blue and pink stars. Some bright pink patches of clustered stars are visible, as are dark brown knots of dust.

M57, or the Ring Nebula, is a planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a sun-like star. The tiny white dot in the center of the nebula is the star’s hot core, called a white dwarf.
