The Voynich Manuscript
Purchase options and add-ons
“For the first time, a complete reproduction [of] The Voynich Manuscript, has been published, featuring essays exploring what is known about the book and extra-wide margins so readers can record their responses to its beguiling, beautiful strangeness.”—Nina Maclaughlin, Boston Globe
“For people who like a good historical mystery, this . . . fifteenth- or sixteenth-century Voynich Manuscript will fascinate.”—Rebecca Onion, Slate
Many call the fifteenth-century codex, commonly known as the “Voynich Manuscript,” the world’s most mysterious book. Written in an unknown script by an unknown author, the manuscript has no clearer purpose now than when it was rediscovered in 1912 by rare books dealer Wilfrid Voynich. The manuscript appears and disappears throughout history, from the library of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to a secret sale of books in 1903 by the Society of Jesus in Rome. The book’s language has eluded deciphering, and its elaborate illustrations remain as baffling as they are beautiful. For the first time, this facsimile, complete with elaborate folding sections, allows readers to explore this enigma in all its stunning detail, from its one-of-a-kind “Voynichese” text to its illustrations of otherworldly plants, unfamiliar constellations, and naked women swimming though fantastical tubes and green baths.
The essays that accompany the manuscript explain what we have learned about this work—from alchemical, cryptographic, forensic, and historical perspectives—but they provide few definitive answers. Instead, as New York Times best-selling author Deborah Harkness says in her introduction, the book “invites the reader to join us at the heart of the mystery.”

Review
“For people who like a good historical mystery, this first authorized publication of the fifteenth- or sixteenth-century Voynich Manuscript will fascinate.”—Rebecca Onion, Slate
“Handsome and well-produced. . . This facsimile and the accompanying series of essays give a clear sense of the current state of knowledge on the manuscript and reveal the findings of new research.”—H. R. Woud Huysen, Times Literary Supplement
“The Voynich MS has inspired generations of enthusiasts dedicated to deciphering it. . . . This beautiful facsimile will make it available for many more people to become enticed and entranced by it.”—David V. Barrett, Fortean Times
“The Voynich Manuscript, a volume edited by the library’s curator Raymond Clemens, revivifies this tantalising artefact. . . . Wide margins are deliberately provided for readers’ notes on their own ideas. ‘Bonne chance!,’ writes Clemens. I’ll second that.”—Andrew Robinson, Nature
“The publication by Yale University Press of an actual-size colored facsimile, with an informative set of specialist essays on the manuscript’s history, materials, cryptological puzzles, and public impact, will no doubt encourage wider engagement with its enigmas and set off a multitude of amateur as well as professional attempts to decipher it.”—Eamon Duffy, New York Review of Books
“Bibliophiles rejoice—one of the book world’s most fascinating and enduring riddles is now available for all to examine. The so-called ‘Voynich Manuscript’ is proof that, even in our increasingly demystified world, mystery is still alive. . . . For the first time, Yale has reprinted the manuscript in full, in a gorgeous new edition coupled with scholarly essays on the book. All told, the new edition should continue to stoke interest in the eternally mysterious artifact.”—New Criterion
“A mouthwatering facsimile of the incunabulum, complete with foldout pages—one origamied into six folios—and a handful of scholarly interrogations.”—Peter Lewis, Minneapolis Star-Tribune
“[A] very high-quality reproduction of the manuscript . . . [and] the essays are valuable additions to the facsimile.”—Jesse Siragan Arlen, Comitatus
“This volume sets out clearly and succinctly the current state of knowledge about this remarkable manuscript.”—Toby Burrows, Parergon
“Absolutely no one completely understands the Voynich manuscript, . . . [but] now readers can explore a complete reproduction of this indecipherable text, accompanied by essays that seek to make sense of it all.”—Jennifer Byrne, Mental Floss
First-Place Winner, Book Industry Guild of New York Book Show, Scholarly Illustrated Books
“This new book, reproducing the entire Voynich Manuscript, is a godsend. While the essays offer valid clues to the manuscript’s age and relation to late medieval science, the manuscript itself stubbornly refuses to yield its secrets.”—Roger S. Wieck, Department of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts, Morgan Library & Museum
“A book worthy of its subject in every way. Clemens and his collaborators have done an extraordinary job teasing out some of the secrets and wonders of the enigmatic Voynich Manuscript in ways that will make this volume an invaluable resource for many years to come.”—Bruce Holsinger, author of A Burnable Book
“Many hands have held Voynich’s now-eponymous book over the centuries . . . yet none of them have managed convincingly to solve its mysteries.”—Deborah Harkness, from the Introduction

Wonderful book!
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2026Beautiful book. The high resolution images of the manuscript’s pages are excellent. It’s also nice they are to scale too. It’s a fascinating document and I’m happy the Yale library made the full codex available in this format. Highly recommend for anyone interested in esoteric or occult studies, cosmology, ancient documents, Theosophical concepts etc…

Exceptional, Beautiful, & Mysterious Book
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2025Exceptionally high quality book, very beautiful, and contains the most recent information available on the amazing enigma that is The Voynich Manuscript. The original work is believed to have probably been written in the very early 1400's, although even that is uncertain. Over the centuries the book has moved around the world from owner to owner.
In 1969 it was given to the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University where it remains today, still being studied. Yale has scanned each page perfectly to produce this superb copy of the original. It still mystifies all who see it today. Well worth every penny of the price.

High quality printing and binding
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2026Book came as advertised. The binding and pages are high-quality from what I can tell, which I suppose justifies the higher price point for the book. This will be a nice addition to any weird book collection.

A must have for all Voynich fans!
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2026Yes, you can see the whole thing online at the Yale Library where it is stored. But having the physical book in hand adds a different dimension to studying this enigma. The printing is super clear and the foldout aspect is really a nice benefit. If you are fascinated with the Voynich Manuscript and don't have a physical copy, this is the one to get!

More Appropriate as a Coffee Table/Conversation Piece
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2021I've always been fascinated by this manuscript and the many questions its existence and history provoke. Knowing this, I bought this book as a gift for a friend who shows similar interest in the manuscript. The book itself is well-built (I see other reviews saying the pages and build feel cheap, but I'm not sure if I was just lucky in how my copy came), and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. This being said, I feel there's one important thing to note for anyone looking to pick this up; This is NOT a book you should buy if your intentions are further studying the manuscript. If you're content with having a brief introduction to the book's history and study over the years, then this book delivers quite well.. but if you're looking for something of an "in-depth analysis" of the manuscript, then you may be disappointed to find this book contains 90% illustrations with very little substance/preface describing them. This is why I say this book is a 100% buy if you wish to own a physical version the manuscript as a novelty or a gift, but wouldn't feel confident in recommending it for anything else.

Wondering??
Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2026With it being unknown language my not even two year old daughter is drawn to this book. She loves books of all sorts but doesn’t usually sit and actually look at them for more then 30 seconds my daughter sat there for almost 30 minutes and actually looked as though she was reading the page like fingers on line following it and enjoying it. Anyone else have any experience with this?

A Treat for Lovers of the Esoteric!
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2017This oversized, hardcover reprint of Beinecke MS 408, commonly known as the Voynich Manuscript after Wilfrid Voynich who purchased it in 1912, makes for a nice addition to anyone's collection. As Raymond Clemens writes in the preface, "This facsimile strives to reproduce as much of the experience of leafing through the original as possible. Each photograph in the facsimile section is reproduced at roughly the same size as the original page in the Voynich Manuscript" (pg. xvi). The essays following the enigmatic fifteenth century manuscript examine the earliest owners, Voynich the buyer, physical findings, cryptographic attempts, alchemical traditions, and the world's most mysterious manuscript, along with a chronology of the document. Deborah Hakrness, author of the introduction, writes, "This collections of essays, and the facsimile of the Voynich Manuscript that accompanies it, do not attempt to arrive at definitive answers to the many perplexing questions that remain about the text. Instead, they invite the reader to join us at the heart of the mystery as we strive to better understand this complex book and its history" (pg. ix). Those interested in the esoteric or bizarre will find this a great addition to their collection.

Eraserhead5 out of 5 starsFor those wondering about that negative review...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2022...I'm almost certain it must be for a different book. The one here is an authorised edition produced by the university itself. It contains life-sized scans of every single page of the Manuscript, printed in full colour on silky, heavy-stock paper (with margins to make notes if you like!).
It also features ingenious multi-page fold-outs that replicate those in the Manuscript, and has several excellent essays on how the MS was found, how it was made and carbon-dated, the possible meanings and so on.
In short, it's about as close as you'll get to looking at the Manuscript first-hand. I have nothing to do with the book - apart from having just bought it - but I think it's useful to point all this out.
