Se describen los principios del paradigma de la cognición situada vinculado al enfoque sociocultural vigotskiano que se afirma que el conocimiento es situado, es decir, forma parte y es producto de la actividad, el contexto y la cultura. Se destacan la importancia de la mediación, la construcción conjunta de significados y los mecanismos de ayuda ajustada. Se ejemplifican algunos enfoques instruccionales que varían en su relevancia cultural y en el tipo de actividad social que propician. Se presenta un conjunto de estrategias para el aprendizaje significativo basadas en una enseñanza situada y experiencial (solución de problemas auténticos, aprendizaje en el servicio, análisis de casos, proyectos, simulaciones situadas, entre otros), y se concluye en términos de su potencialidad para promover el facultamiento.

This paper argues that the emotional dynamics that structure a person’s relationship to drug use and their environment over time are central to understanding how agency is both operative and constrained in addiction. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 69 people with alcohol and opioid addictions, we conceptualize drug use as a form of affective scaffolding – a socially and materially situated strategy for emotion regulation. When this scaffolding becomes inflexible and monopolizing, immediate emotion regulation is prioritized over long-term self-regulation, and an emotional distress and regulation loop results, systematically inclining the agent toward ongoing drug use. We propose that this dynamic gradually constricts a person’s affective repertoire, diminishing the salience of certain diachronic concerns and values, and making it more difficult to sustain behaviour oriented toward recovery. The paper closes by introducing the concept of affective recovery niches – structured environments that support alternative patterns of emotion regulation to develop. We focus, in particular, on the important role that other people can play in the recovery niche.  Recovery niches disrupt the distress and regulation loop and restore one’s affective repertoire. Thus, they counteract the affective dynamics that we argue keep people stuck in addiction and make new forms of agency possible.

Future faculty members are shaped through the socialization processes of doctoral education. Training the best and the brightest minds for faculty positions is a key interest for colleges and universities, however, structural barriers exist that can impede or prevent many talented students from successfully completing Ph.D. programs. This is especially the case for students from marginalized groups. Within the doctoral student population, there is very little understanding of the experiences of mothers in Ph.D. programs. As women continue to enter the academic workforce, and therefore doctoral education, in increasing numbers the interaction between mothering students and their universities become more salient to understand. L'enjeu de la subjectivation dans les pratiques d'évaluation à l'école élémentaire Le risque aliénant des pratiques d'évaluation traditionnelles, basées sur le classement par la note, a été largement documenté par des décennies de recherches en sciences sociales, aussi bien en termes de reproduction et de légitimation des inégalités qu'en termes identitaires, motivationnels et d'apprentissage (Butera, Buchs & Darnon, 2011). L'évaluation aliénante ou « nocive » est celle qui, en catégorisant l'élève, tend à le positionner parmi d'autres, dans une logique de comparaison sociale, au détriment d'un projet de progression propre. A contrario, une évaluation qui a une fonction émancipatrice tend à envisager l'élève comme un sujet en tant que tel, capable de se situer et de participer à une stratégie de progression personnelle. Il s'agit, par le moyen de l'évaluation, de lui faire prendre conscience que son histoire s'inscrit dans une dynamique singulière dans laquelle ses actions sont productrices d'effets sur soi et sur autrui. C'est ce que nous nommons une évaluation subjectivante qui ne se réduit pas à l'autoévaluation, ou plus généralement à l'implication de l'élève dans l'évaluation mais renvoie à la création d'un ordre intersubjectif entre le maitre et l'élève. Dans cet ordre intersubjectif, la construction dialoguée des jugements est centrale et requiert l'encouragement, l'étayage et la valorisation de la parole de l'élève. Ce chapitre présente une recherche collaborative sur l'explicitation par des maitres expérimentés à l'école élémentaire en France de leurs pratiques évaluatives. Ces enseignants ont pour caractéristique de déclarer promouvoir des pratiques que nous pouvons associer à une « évaluation soutien d'apprentissage » . La recherche, initialement descriptive, s'est progressivement recentrée autour de l'objectif de co-construire avec eux ce qui pourrait relever d'une évaluation émancipatrice et subjectivante dans leurs pratiques quotidiennes d'évaluation, sans toutefois leur proposer une modélisation préalable de ce concept qui s'est construit au cours de l'investigation. A savoir une évaluation à même de mobiliser les capacités d'intériorisation de ses expériences et de jugements propres, d'un individu qui est le produit d'une histoire dont il est le sujet en devenir. Nous présentons ci-dessous les différents cadres théoriques que nous convoquons, ainsi que la démarche de recherche et les résultats co-construits. Ce faisant, nous insistons sur la question du sens partagé dans le collectif collaboratif quant à la part de l'élève dans le processus d'évaluation soutien d'apprentissage (ESA), afin d'explorer ce que nous nommerons des « strates de la subjectivation ». Initialement centrée sur la dimension temporelle de la séquence pédagogique, cette étude s'est progressivement focalisée sur les dispositifs de subjectivation et d'intersubjectivation à l'oeuvre dans les pratiques d'évaluation comme dans la recherche collaborative. 1 Nous remercions également Stéphanie Boudet et Eulalie Taurisamo qui ont collaboré à cette recherche.

Das Kapitel entwickelt eine präpräsentationalistische Theorie der Wahrnehmung, der zufolge Wahrnehmen weniger die Abbildung gegebener Realität als die antizipative Erschließung naheliegender Möglichkeiten ist. Ausgehend von der phänomenalen Erfahrung – paradigmatisch veranschaulicht an der Erfahrung einer Pantomime – wird gezeigt, dass Wahrnehmung stets mehr gibt, als sie sinnlich präsentiert: Sie ist ein Geflecht von impliziten Vorwegnahmen und Mitgegenwärtigungen. Subpersonale inferenzielle Prozesse, funktional äquivalent zu unbewussten Schlüssen, ergänzen die unterbestimmten proximalen Reize zu phänomenal reichen Wahrnehmungseindrücken. What is creative thought and how did it initially evolve in modern humans? Beginning with conceptual primitives of which all infants the world over possess barring severe pathology, we look at the evolution and function of two major systems of thought: pareidolia and an algorithmic, rule-based system. But the core of creativity first emerges in supramodular and metaphoric thought supported by systems of phenomenal, affective, and secondary consciousness as well as various mnemonic systems that sustain them. We examine the centrality of biological rhythms in creative self-expression, organizational and planning abilities; narrative (syntagmatic) and paradigmatic faculties along with their symbolic precursors; and the importance of embodied cognition in creative thought.

This paper provides a phenomenological analysis of collective memory, that is, the shared recollection of past events that are relevant for the identity of a group and its members. Focusing on the phenomenological features of how collective remembering is experienced from the first-person perspective of a person embedded in a social group that has a collectively remembered past, I introduce a distinction between two forms of collective memory: egoic and non-egoic. Egoic collective memory refers to recollections of collectively relevant past events that one lived through, while non-egoic collective memory refers to collectively relevant events one cannot remember episodically, often because they occurred before one's lifetime. Egoic collective memory is shown to be connected with episodic memory and the intersubjective aspects of perception, involving implicit references to potential co-remembers that constitute the collective quality of those acts of remembering. Additionally, by relating episodic memory to the self-narratives that are constitutive of our self-identity, I argue that egoic collective memories shape the social identity of individuals. Non-egoic collective memory, in contrast, is encountered through narratives, material culture, rituals, and bodily practices, each with distinct phenomenological features. While most of those encounters involve affective and normative tendencies that scaffold the narratively structured remembrance of a collectively relevant past event in connection with one's own self-narrative and social identity, there are cases where non-egoic collective memory is experienced through a pre-reflective form of body memory that is constitutive of our own personal style and is socioculturally structured.

Este estudio experimental emerge desde la necesidad de contar con valores cuantitativos que distingan la complejidad de aprendizaje y ejecución de los diferentes elementos de la notación musical. Aunque la relación entre música y complejidad es vasta, no hay mucha información sobre modelos de complejidad y notación musical. Aún así, logramos diseñar un modelo que distingue la Complejidad Intrínseca en un grupo de elementos de notación musical de la Práctica Común. Un primer experimento, realizado sobre un corpus de libros de educación musical (N = 64), permite construir un conjunto básico de elementos de notación musical, filtrado del su enorme conjunto. Esta selección fue organizada mediante dos variables: Ordinalidad y Preferencia, que es estadísticamente significativa para incluirse en una medición de complejidad (correlación de Pearson de-0.88; p < 0.001). Con la ayuda de un cálculo de medición de riesgo en la toma de decisiones, realizamos un segundo experimento, donde construimos un nuevo indicador basándonos en las variables mencionadas. Este, al que llamamos Indicador de Pertinencia asigna un valor de complejidad intrínseco distinto para cada elemento de notación musical. Finalmente, es importante recalcar que las relaciones entre estadística y teoría musical distan de tener resultados rigurosos, este texto reporta un acercamiento desde la estadística más simple y pretende ser parte de la integración entre esta y la Artículos originales de investigación 1 teoría musical.

En las últimas décadas, la teoría de la música y la psicología de la música han mostrado un creciente interés en desentrañar los matices de la estructura métrica de la música.  Uno de los principales resultados de este proceso fue la identificacióny articulación de los elementos que subyacen a la inferencia de las construcciones métricas. Sin embargo, la manera en que la teoría y la psicología musical han caracterizado la dimensión métrica de la música se basa en suposiciones que conllevan a una representación determinista. En esta breve revisión, además de debatir sobre las limitaciones de esta caracterización, también podremos pro-poner una alternativa teórica: el Espectro Métrico como una representación dinámica de la dimensión métrica de la música que tiene lugar en una cognición situada semiológicamente.

Seven-year-old Houda was the child of Moroccan immigrants to Spain. With so many people in the community working double shifts as farm workers in the fields that surrounded the town, sometimes women cobbled together interpreting teams, consisting of an adult with some proficiency in Spanish and a younger child who could complement the language skills of the adult if older children were not available. The first time Inma (the second author) met Houda at the local pediatrician's office, she was part of such a team, accompanying two of her female neighbors: A Moroccan woman who had just had a baby and another woman who was doing most of the translation. Houda, however, was not relegated to the sidelines: she was treated as a ratified observer-participant of the interaction; as an apprentice who, additionally, was sometimes consulted when the adults ran into trouble. Beyond exchanges about meaning and childcare, the adult women also engaged Houda in discussions about more pragmatic and strategic dimensions of interpreting work. For example, on another occasion when Inma witnessed Houda interpreting, the mother of the child told her: "Although I don't know Spanish, don't say I don't understand." Gradually, over time, Houda started taking over medical interpreting tasks by herself, translating instructions about vitamins, weight, proper nutrition, and vaccination schedules with an earnestness at odds with her years. When Marjorie (the first author) met Estela at age 11, Estela's mother considered her to be "la mano derecha" ("the right hand") of the family. The oldest of three girls, in a family of migrants from Michoacán, Mexico, to a suburb of Chicago, Estela used her knowledge of English and Spanish to make and answer phone calls, schedule appointments, read the daily mail, run errands, apply for credit, fill out forms, read to her younger sisters, and help them with their homework. Marjorie watched as Estela helped her father fill out an application for credit, interpreted for her mother and her teacher at her conferences, and read stories in translation to her younger sister. Estela often attempted to provide very precise or "verbatim" translations of written texts, perseverating in an attempt to get the words "just right." Over time, however, like Houda, she took to paraphrasing and summarizing larger segments of text, and to doing things for her family rather than explaining everything to them. Cindy was the child of immigrants from Hong Kong to San Francisco. Each evening after her mother came home from work, they would go through the mail together. Cindy enjoyed this rare one-on-one time with her mother, as they worked together to make sense of written material in English related to household functioning. We were not able to observe Cindy in action, but we listened as she talked proudly about the work she handled as she made phone calls to set up appointments, paid the bills, and helped with family finances. Cognitive apprenticeship refers to the development of skills under the guidance and tutelage of a domain expert. This chapter covers the theory and highlights 10 years of virtual learning experiences and 52 classes using the cognitive apprenticeship model. It reflects on the impact of presence and explores how learning communities develop as students assume roles and learn by working next to skilled faculty. The examples reinforce the value of deep immersion and identity in situated learning. The software design activities illustrate the benefits experienced when students assume ownership and structure their activities. Through self-reflection, learners illustrated the power of design thinking through group and individual design studios. The chapter concludes with observations from 400 eighth graders and reflections on future work in the design of sustainable learning programs for computer science and leadership education.

This report focuses on exploring peer activity in the early years through a range of contextual frameworks. The research is conducted within a children&#39;s centre that provides nursery education for children aged 3-4 years as defined by the Early Years Foundation Stage - EYFS (2007). &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Research rationale focuses on the notion of, &lt;i&gt;&#39;reflexive co-construction&#39;&lt;/i&gt; through &lt;i&gt;&#39;sustained shared thinking&#39;&lt;/i&gt; (Siraj-Blatchford, 2002, p10). In order to appreciate this concept more fully among peers, it is suggested that a robust pedagogy is required to enhance the practitioner&#39;s understanding of peer activity. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; It is argued that context and peer activity are inextricably linked. If we are to consider peer activity, then its relationship with context must be more fully studied and articulated than in previous discussions. People's affective experience in learning processes is a facet that is usually thought to be independent of their performance and engagement with learning objects. However, in contemporary philosophy, affectivity is an inherent component in learning. This means that directed content-discontent activities can be analyzed alongside the development of metastable tendencies to deal with immediate environments. Using the content-discontent approach for addition problems was analysed in this study. A total of 86 students from three schools in Manizales and Bogotá (Colombia) studying First to Fifth Grade were asked to solve 10 problems. Profiles, differences, correlations and mediational analysis were identified among students who learnt using the directed content-discontent technique. The findings identify the need for students to develop metastable attunement so that they can acquire addition and subtraction skills in primary school.

This work pays tribute to the work of Professor Magnani by analyzing and applying his Eco-Cognitive Abduction Model (also known as the EC-Model) to introduce axiological values’ role in the generation of scientific hypotheses. For this purpose, the cognitive dimension of the researcher is proposed in this work as a complementary factor to better understand the scientific paradigm shift. In particular, it is assumed that the experience of discovering a surprising fact that neither current theories nor methodologies can account for generates a state of radical ignorance that can provoke in the agent the emotion of anguish in the face of the imperative need to find a solution. Faced with ignorance as the only available evidence of the fact that triggers anguish, the agent’s abducted hypotheses will be much more fragile than usual because they contain very distant elements, which will imply a more significant commitment to the interpretation of the scientific discipline involved, as well as to the agent’s own vision of how the paradigm should be understood. This fragility, however, does not undermine the process but revitalizes the discipline in crisis with novel proposals that motivate suggestive new lines of investigation.

Situated learning could benefit STEAM education because both aim to develop skills that can deal with complex real-life situations. Although ample research has been conducted into situated learning within higher vocational education in general, there exists little research on the implementation of the educational approach in STEAM education specifically. To gain insight into what is needed for this implementation, a case study of a situational simulation was conducted within a STEAM education context, in which we observed students in simulating media design studios. We observed the setup, working and evaluation phases of the simulation and analyze the data this yielded -setup surveys, studio agreements, feedback forms, individual reflections and concluding surveys -based on three core features of situated learning: community of practice, participation and authentic context. Based on this analysis, we conclude that our study confirms the potential of situated learning for STEAM education. Our case study also suggests four guidelines for, as well as one challenge in, the implementation of situated learning in STEAM education. These guidelines and challenge are 1.) to actively facilitate quality feedback between students within a situational simulation; 2.) to promote taking various professional roles within the simulation, 3.) to provide situational-specific scaffolding based on the determination of which skills and information should be offered by tutors and which skills and information students already possess or are best left to develop and find by themselves; and 4.) to gain insight into individual learning goals for the benefit of the cognitive realism of the simulation; while 5.) the absence of real financial or commercial consequences compromises the authenticity of a situational simulation and, consequently, challenges the implementation of situated learning in STEAM education.

The 'simulation hypothesis' is an intriguing explanation for cognition, and holds that 'thinking consists of simulated interaction with the environment' ([4], p.242). However, the neuroscientific proof for a simulation mechanism in the brain is indirect. In this paper we present a minimal-model approach to investigate the 'simulation hypothesis'. Our minimal model is called ACP and is an extension of the Active Categorical Perception model (ACP) presented in . In ACP , robots have a neurocontroller with an output-input feedback mechanism that allows them to simulate perception and behaviour internally. Our experiments focus on the performance of robots with three different types of neurocontroller (two feedforward and one recurrent type of neurocontroller). Their performance is compared over three experimental conditions in which the output-input feedback mechanism is functional for variable durations. The results show that feedforward-neurocontrolled robots benefit from output-input feedback, while recurrent-neurocontrolled robots do not. Based on these results, two closely related conclusions are drawn: (1) the 'simulation hypothesis' may be too specific, and (2) predicting future perception may depend on neural recurrency (i.e., internal feedback) in general, rather than on the ability to simulate perception by feeding back actions.

    Par rapport à la psychologie de la santé, l’approche de l’art-thérapie est plus centrée sur l’accroissement et la capacitation des ressources personnelles. L’art-thérapie, c’est l’habileté à faire avec soi-même. L’art-thérapie va offrir cette liberté d’expression que les mots ne permettent pas d’atteindre, elle propose une manière d’exprimer ses difficultés par un autre moyen que la parole, afin d’éviter le blocage des mots.
Ce qui compte c’est le processus thérapeutique, qui s’inscrit dans un espace/temps intérieur du sujet. L’expérience vécue au moment présent permet de redéfinir un cadre, d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives, dans une trajectoire de vie avec un passé qui peut devenir moins pesant et un futur qui peut enfin s’éclaircir.
      L’art-thérapie permet alors de se débloquer dans sa vie et de retrouver de nouvelles motivations. Réaliser et transformer quelque chose par le biais du bricolage créatif amène les personnes à faire des choix et prendre des décisions.
      Dans les établissements de santé, les activités artistiques peuvent servir de complément aux protocoles thérapeutiques ou renforcer ces derniers, souligne l’OMS qui a par exemple constaté que l’écoute de la musique ou les réalisations artistiques limitaient les effets secondaires des traitements contre le cancer, dont la somnolence, le manque d’appétit, l’essoufflement et les nausées.

El rol de las figuras parentales en el desarrollo de competencias básicas ha sido objeto de múltiples debates tanto en psicología como en pedagogía. En el contexto de una investigación sobre el papel de las emociones en el aprendizaje de la adición y la sustracción se propuso detectar también las relaciones entre la participación de los padres, madres o cuidadores en la actividad académica del niño y su nivel de desempeño. Los resultados muestran que los adultos son capaces de reflexionar críticamente sobre su disposición para participar en el proceso de enseñanza, su capacidad para motivar el aprendizaje y su habilidad para percibir oportunidades de enseñanza. Estas tendencias correlacionan con sus atribuciones de dificultad a los niños que a su vez se relacionan con el nivel de desempeño de los niños en las tareas de adición y sustracción. Aunque las tendencias son consistentes con la idea de que la interacción con los cuidadores puede promover el aprendizaje o imponer barreras al desarrollo de competencias el asunto necesita investigación adicional.

The study of lived experience of learners requires the researcher to adopt a second-person perspective in which s/he constitutes descriptions of lived experience through a relational process. We present two second-person methods for collecting data: explicitation and self-confrontation interviews. Two case studies illustrate the implementation of these methods: the first focuses on sensorial experience in swimming lessons, and the second concerns understanding in teacher training. Endorsing lived experience as a unit of analysis allows thinking anew the consideration of the individual into socio-cultural approaches of learning.

This is an updated version of a previous article, with added A.I. Produced Notes on Substantial Fairness in Semantics and Strategies. It is a new conclusion in perfect alignment with the original argument. Substantial fairness goes beyond merely interpreting and applying rules consistently or treating individuals impartially and equally. Instead, it requires that a decision resulting from a rule or system accommodates all applicable moral distinctions and reasons for everyone involved. This means moving beyond formal equality to ensure treatment is "proper, deserved, or appropriate under the circumstances". It reflects a deeper concern for justice that considers not just the process, but also the societal implications and whether the outcomes align with broader moral values like human flourishing.

This article presents the valve as a foundational mechanism in the architecture of attention, modulating cross-field activity between the physical and mental domains of experience. The valve governs the selective passage of signals between sensory and cognitive fields, shaping the boundary of what becomes conscious. Its function is both automatic, reflecting adaptive patterns acquired through learning, context, and affective history, and volitional, enabling the agent to exert directed influence over the configuration of awareness. As a phenomenological site of interface between perception and thought, impression and expression, the valve constitutes the dynamic infrastructure through which relevance is forged, coherence is maintained, and agency is exercised. It offers a unified account of attentional control rooted in phenomenological structure and informed by cognitive theory, recasting the governance of attention as a principal medium through which selfhood and freedom are enacted.

As researchers, we often seek to change science education practices that have become outdated. Throughout such change processes we are faced with the dilemma of embodying relationships of power or discourse that we are trying to transform. A situated cognition framework would suggest that this conundrum is inevitable because a community of practitioners is fundamentally bound by the institution and its resources, concerns and ways of being. If we cannot step outside the institution we are trying to change how can we change something which defines who we, as agents of change, are? We reframe the issue as one of cultural production, where we locate ourselves within a cultural field, struggling to change it. This paper embodies some of the tensions involved in cultural re/production of science education. These tensions are played out both in our autobiographical accounts that are part of this article and in the relationship of the authors as graduate student and supervisor. Through a conversational hermeneutic analysis of the authors' autobiographical writings, we examine some of the salient features of bringing about change in science education. "Science for all" with its activities of questioning, discovery and technical empowerment (Fourez, 1997) is an important part of a democratic society. Through a philosophical analysis on the pervasiveness of technology, embodiment is presented as a key principle for reducing uncertainty. This hypothesis is supported by a synthesis of theories, combining the acquisition-learning hypothesis, the information-integration theory, and a neuroscientific account of predictive processing. The Embodied Philosophy is introduced through an exploration of an embodied integration of knowledge and knowing, proposing four core postulates as foundations for designing assistive augmentations: risk, affordance, tenacity, and skill.

Modern coexistence theory (MCT) is one of the leading methods to understand species coexistence. It uses invasion growth rates – the average, per-capita growth rate of a rare species – to identify when and why species coexist. Despite significant advances in dissecting coexistence mechanisms when coexistence occurs, MCT relies on a “mutual invasibility” condition designed for two species communities, but poorly defined for species rich communities. Here, we review well-known issues with this component of MCT and propose a solution based on recent mathematical advances. We propose a clear framework for expanding MCT to species rich communities and for understanding invasion resistance as well as coexistence, especially for communities which could not be analyzed with MCT so far. The dual theories of embodied mind and situated cognition, in which physical/temporal embodiment and physical/social/cultural environment contribute crucially to the structure of mind, are brought to bear on issues in music perception. It is argued that cognitive universals grounded in human bodily experience are tempered by the cultural specificity that constructs the role of the body in musical performance. Special focus is given to microrhythmic techniques in specific forms of African-American music, using audio examples created by the author or sampled from well-known jazz recordings.

In this paper I argue that material artifacts and other environmental structures that are present during religious rituals both enable and restrict forms of action as well as our capabilities to perform these actions. Moreover, these external prompts have farreaching consequences on the way the ritual action is established and reproduced within cultures. My main focus is on the cognitive dimension of the problem, however I understand this to be in concert with visible and tangible practice. I argue that religious ritual material artifacts enable a whole range of higher cognitive abilities such as memory, decision-making or computing, and I support this claim by the theory of extended and situated cognition as well as by various specific examples from religious worlds and evidence from experimental research. This paper also contains a brief case study that discusses two religious artifacts (prayer beads and mechanical clicker). I argue that each of them supports a different mix of cognitive abilities and as such they are key elements in religious practice and vital elements constituting the practitioner's competence.
