Improving Psychological Well-Being of Young Adults by Conducting Family History Research at a Religious University

Prior research suggests that knowledge of one's family is correlated with, but does not produce, ... more Prior research suggests that knowledge of one's family is correlated with, but does not produce, psychological well-being. We test this conjecture, by examining whether participating in family history research (i.e., genealogical research) is associated with psychological well-being above and beyond the effects of knowledge of one's family, documented in prior research. To test this, we examine whether students enrolled in a university level family history course, improve in family identification, selfesteem, anxiety, resilience, and locus of control more than a control sample. For students enrolled in the family history course, we find an increase in family identification, which in turn leads to improvements in each of these areas of psychological wellbeing. Direct effects of being in the family history course show improvements in selfesteem of 8% and reductions in anxiety of 20%. In follow-up tests we examine which aspects of genealogical research are associated with measures of psychological wellbeing and find that researching genealogical records (e.g., examining census records) is associated with greater self-esteem and reduced anxiety but that posting memories about families and expanding one's family tree do not have the same relation with measures of psychological well-being.

Digital documents are much more ephemeral, so archivists should be aware of the inherent limitations of the technologies available for preservation of digital data. This paper compiles the results of several studies on this subject, in addition to presenting new findings on what can be expected for recordable optical discs (CDs and DVDs). The bottom line is that, with one notable exception, digital data cannot be expected to endure using any existing technologies.

This paper describes the process for identifying and evaluating Information Technology (IT) bache... more This paper describes the process for identifying and evaluating Information Technology (IT) bachelor's programs in the United States, in an effort to answer the question, how many IT bachelor's programs are there in the US? Due to widespread variation in the names of academic degree programs, one cannot simply count those named Information Technology. At SIGITE 2011, a framework was presented for identifying IT programs and for evaluating their compliance to an accepted standard. This framework, with slight modifications, has been applied throughout this research. We first compiled a list of prospective IT programs to research. Each university on the list was researched by looking at their university webpage in search of a list of computing majors listed at that university. If, at a glance, these program's required courses look similar to those required in an IT program, the program was evaluated and given a numerical score compliance factor, as compared to the standard, no matter the name of the major. This compliance factor is calculated using the assessment form that is included in this document. The results of this analysis are presented.

This bias can significantly affect modeling goals. In particular, accelerated lifetime testing involves an extrapolation of the fitted model, and a small amount of bias in parameter estimates may result in a significant increase in the bias of the extrapolated predictions. Additionally, bias may arise when the stochastic component of a log regression model is assumed to be multiplicative when the actual underlying stochastic component is additive. To account for these possible sources of bias, a log regression model with measurement error and additive error is approximated by a weighted regression model which can be estimated using Iteratively Re-weighted Least Squares. Using the reduced Eyring equation in an accelerated testing setting, the model is compared to previously accepted approaches to modeling accelerated testing data with both simulations and real data.

There are also approximately 28 TAC of ABET-accredited 4-year programs in manufacturing engineering technology. Most of these mechanical and manufacturing engineering technology programs require their students to take at least one class in computing or electronics. The purpose of this paper is to provide a descriptive comparison of these 4-year programs in mechanical and manufacturing engineering technology, focusing on the computing and electronics requirements for their students. The details include courses, course titles, and topics covered.

The invention and creation of the digital computer in the mid-20th century gave rise to a host of... more The invention and creation of the digital computer in the mid-20th century gave rise to a host of new industries and dramatic changes in some of the programs offered at 4-year academic institutions. The first of these was the discipline of computer science, followed by the disciplines of information systems, computer-based library science, computer engineering, software engineering, and information technology. Additionally, there are newly-emerging programs in disciplines that are heavily computer-dependent, such as animation, industrial design, bioinformatics, and others. The purpose of this paper is to present the history and current status of the five core computing academic disciplines as described in the Computing Curriculum document: computer science, information systems, computer engineering, software engineering, and information technology. The information summarized includes the number of programs in existence, the development of a standardized curriculum for each, and the development and implementation of accreditation standards for each.

As computer systems become more complex, the state of their inner workings become more and more i... more As computer systems become more complex, the state of their inner workings become more and more important to the system administrators working to keep them running. Log files provide much needed visibility into these systems, whether they are hardware, operating systems or applications. Unfortunately, systems can easily create overwhelming amounts of data for administrators to comb through. This research tests the effectiveness of three off-the-shelf Bayesian spam email filters (SpamAssassin, SpamBayes and Bogofilter) for effectiveness as log entry classifiers. A simple scoring system, the Filter Effectiveness Scale (FES), is proposed and used to compare these three filters. The filters are tested in three stages: 1) the filters were tested with the SpamAssassin corpus, with various manipulations made to the messages, 2) the filters were tested for their ability to differentiate log entries from two services, with logs taken from production systems, and 3) the filters were trained with problem-related log entries from system outages and then tested for effectiveness in finding similar outages through similar log files.

Fabrication and Characterization of of Nanoscale Tellurium Fuses for Long Term Solid State Data Storage

To allow permanent data storage, we have developed an electronically programmable solid state data storage solution. Using electron beam lithography, we have fabricated nanoscale fuses onto silicon chips using Te as the fuse material. The writing voltage required for fuses between 10 µm and 500 nm has been determined. Fuses that have minimum features of 500 nm can be programmed with a writing voltage less than 10 V and a power of 1.5 mW. Finite element analysis was used to estimate the temperature of the fuses at the writing voltage. Larger step voltages (20 V and 30 V) were applied to 500 nm fuses to determine if large gaps could be formed across the fuses by increasing the writing voltage and gaps up to 700 nm could be formed. Characterization of the fuses before and after programming was done by scanning electron microscopy.

A novel write-once-read-many (WORM) optical stack on Mylar tape is proposed as a replacement for ... more A novel write-once-read-many (WORM) optical stack on Mylar tape is proposed as a replacement for magnetic tape for archival data storage. This optical tape contains a cosputtered bismuth-tellurium-selenium (BTS) alloy as the write layer sandwiched between thin, protective films of reactively sputtered carbon. The composition and thickness of the BTS layer were confirmed by Rutherford Backscattering (RBS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The C/BTS/C stack on Mylar was written to/marked by 532 nm laser pulses. Under the same conditions, control Mylar films without the optical stack were unaffected. Marks, which showed craters/movement of the write material, were characterized by optical microscopy and AFM. The threshold laser powers for making marks on C/BTS/C stacks with different thicknesses were explored. Higher quality marks were made with a 60× objective compared to a 40× objective in our marking apparatus. The laser writing process was simulated with COMSOL.

Until about 2006, this area of research apparently did not exist, but advances in the past several years at Brigham Young University and at Millenniata, Inc., have produced one product (the M-Disc -a permanent recordable optical disc of DVD capacity), a follow-on recordable optical disc of Blu-ray capacity, work on multi-layer optical discs of Blu-ray capacity on each layer, work on a permanent solid-state storage medium, and work on a permanent optical tape storage medium. This paper explains the approach used to develop these products and advance the research for permanent digital data storage.

Organizations deal with this by regularly migrating to new storage, archiving to tape, storing in the cloud, and other techniques known together as active management. While this seems to have solved the problem for organizations, it does not solve the problem for individuals, for whom active management is untenable. This paper presents the results of research focused at creating a medium for permanently storing digital photos and any other digital data, and compares the results of this study to all other digital data storage options available today.
