Aim: To assess the degree of facial symmetry in patients suffering from unilateral cleft lip, alveolus and palate (UCLAP) by determining differences between the cleft and the non-cleft hemifaces from 3D surface data. Patients and methods: In twenty-two 10-year-old UCLAP patients, who had the lip repaired using the Tennison-Randall technique and did not undergo further revisional surgery, differences were determined between landmarks, surface areas of the upper lip vermilion and nostrils and virtual volumes of midface, nose and upper lip for cleft and non-cleft sides, separately, after having established a plane of symmetry calculated from optical 3D facial surface data. Results: Statistically significant differences could be found between cleft and non-cleft sides for the nasal landmarks G lat , G sup and La med , the nostril angle and the virtual volume of the nose (p Glat ¼ 0.011, p Gsup o0.0005, p Lamed ¼ 0.002, p nostril angle ¼ 0.036 and p nose volume o0.0005, resp.). Conclusion: Analysis of 3D data shows that complete nasal symmetry is difficult to achieve with Tennison-Randall's lip repair without revisional surgery. To describe a novel calibration technique for photographs of different sizes and to test a new method of chin evaluation in relation to established analysis measurements. Design: A photograph analysis and medical record review of 14 patients who underwent combined rhinoplasty and chin correction at an academic center. Patients undergoing concurrent orthognathic surgery, rhytidectomy, or submental liposuction were excluded. Preoperative and postoperative digital photographs were analyzed using computer imaging software with a new method, the soft tissue porion to pogonion distance, and with established measurements, including the cervicomental angle, the mentocervical angle, and the facial convexity angle. Results: The porion to pogonion distance consistently increased after the chin correction procedure (more in the os-seous group). All photograph angle measurements changed toward the established normal range postoperatively. Conclusions: Surgery for facial disharmony requires artistic judgment and objective evaluation. Although 3-dimensional video analysis of the face seems promising, its clinical use is limited by cost. For surgeons who use computer imaging software, analysis of profile photographs is the most valuable tool. Even when preoperative and postoperative photographs are of different sizes, relative distance comparisons are possible with a new calibration technique using the constant facial landmarks, the porion and the pupil. The porion-pogonion distance is a simple reproducible measurement that can be used along with established soft tissue measurements as a guide for profile facial analysis.

The Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy (DANVA) was designed to measure individual differences in the accurate sending and receiving of nonverbal social information. The DANVA consists of four receptive and three expressive subtests that measure nonverbal processing accuracy in children from 6 to 10 years of age. Four propositions were offered to guide the gathering of construct validity data for the DANVA. In support of the propositions, researchers found that DANVA accuracy scores increased with age, were internally consistent and reliable over time, and showed significant relationships with indices of personal and social adjustment and academic achievement but were not related to IQ. Evidence for construct validity was stronger for receptive, as compared to expressive, subtests. Future research should include additional populations of subjects and study of the impact of intensity of emotion being sent or received.

Background . Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) is a new modality that was reported to be effective in treatment of acne scars. Objective . To evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of this laser in treatment of acne scars. Patients and methods . This case series, descriptive and comparative study was conducted in Al-Najaf Teaching Hospital of Kufa Medical College, Iraq from October 2010 to October 2011. A total of 16 patients having mild to moderate facial acne scars were enrolled; 10 of them completed the study. All patients had Fitzpatrick skin type III. They were divided into two groups A and B and were treated with two different energy fl uences: 5 J/cm2 for group (A) and 15 J/cm2 for group (B). Five treatment sessions with 2-week intervals were done for all patients and were followed up for 6 months. The improvement was evaluated by objective and subjective methods. Results . Changes in acne scores in both groups were statistically insignifi cant after 6 months follow-up. Only two patients were satisfi ed with the improvement after treatment -one patient from each group. People tend to perceive identical top halves (i.e. above the nose) of two face stimuli as being different when they are aligned with distinct bottom halves. This composite face illusion is generally considered as the most compelling evidence that facial features are integrated into a holistic representation. Here, we recorded eye-movements during the composite face illusion in a delayed matching task of top halves of faces. Behavioural results showed a strong composite face effect, participants making more mistakes and taking longer time to match two identical top halves of faces when they were aligned (vs. misaligned) with different bottom halves. Importantly, fixation sites and eyemovements were virtually identical when the top and bottom parts were aligned (composite illusion) or misaligned (no illusion), indicating that holistic face processing can be independent of gaze behaviour. These findings reinforce the view that holistic representations of individual faces can be extracted early on from information at a relatively coarse scale, independently of overt attention.

Humans’ conscious awareness of objects in their visual periphery is limited. This limit is not entirely the result of reduced visual acuity. Rather, it is primarily caused by crowding—the difficulty identifying an object when it is surrounded by clutter. The effect of crowding on visual awareness in infants has yet to be explored. Do infants, for example, have a fine-grained “spotlight,” as adults do, or do infants have a diffuse “lantern” that sets limits on what they can register in their visual periphery? We designed an eye-tracking paradigm to psychophysically measure crowding in infants between 6 months and 15 months of age. We showed infants pairs of faces at three eccentricities, in the presence or absence of flankers, and recorded infants’ first saccade from central fixation to either face. Primates possess the remarkable ability to differentiate faces of group members and to extract relevant information about the individual directly from the face. Recognition of conspecific faces is achieved by means of holistic processing, i.e. the processing of the face as an unparsed, perceptual whole, rather than as the collection of independent features (part-based processing). The most striking example of holistic processing is the Thatcher illusion. Local changes in facial features are hardly noticeable when the whole face is inverted (rotated 1808), but strikingly grotesque when the face is upright. This effect can be explained by a lack of processing capabilities for locally rotated facial features when the face is turned upside down. Recently, a Thatcher illusion was described in the macaque monkey analogous to that known from human investigations. Using a habituation paradigm combined with eye tracking, we address the critical follow-up questions raised in the aforementioned study to show the Thatcher illusion as a function of the observer's species (humans and macaques), the stimulus' species (humans and macaques) and the level of perceptual expertise (novice, expert).

Using a double selection process comprised of professional and lay judges, the cephalometric tracings on a final sample of 48 Chinese adults with esthetically pleasing profiles were analyzed. The soft-tissue cephalometric norms and standard deviations of two widely accepted soft-tissue analyses, the Legan and Burstone analysis and the Holdaway analysis, were determined. In comparison with white norms, the Chinese nose was less prominent (P < .Ol), the nasolabial angle was less obtuse (P < .Ol), both the upper and lower lips were more protrusive (P < .05), the upper lip curvature was greater (P < .Ol), and the soft-tissue chin thickness was less (P < .05). This variance between racial types emphasizes the need to recognize that soft-tissue lateral cephalometric norms are specific for the racial group and cannot always be applied across different racial types.

Background: Poly-L-lactic acid gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for use in human immunodeficiency virus-related facial lipoatrophy in August of 2004. Since that time, it has become available for use in the United States for human immunodeficiency virus facial lipoatrophy patients and for off-label uses in other areas for soft-tissue contouring. This article is intended to enumerate reconstitution, injection techniques, management, and avoidance of complications. Methods: The authors have pooled their experiences to arrive at a consensus opinion for recommendations on treatment protocols for injectable poly-L-lactic acid use. Results: This article prescribes techniques to achieve safer, consistent results while minimizing risks of complications with injectable poly-L-lactic acid. Although the product has been used widely in Europe since 1999, physicians in the United States have only recently begun to explore the uses of Sculptra as a volumizing agent in the face and the body. U.S. physicians have benefited from the European experience with this product, including early problems secondary to overaggressive use, low-volume reconstitution, higher volume injection of product at one session, and inadequate time between injection sessions. Conclusions: The authors therefore have opted for a more conservative approach in their treatment recommendations. Higher volume dilution (8 to 12 cc), fewer vials used at each session, injections placed in the subcutaneous plane without any product being placed in the dermis, adequate time between injection sessions (at least 6 weeks), and postinjection patient massage should decrease the risks and avoid the potential complications associated with poly-L-lactic acid soft-tissue augmentation.

Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data of human body, extracting a feature set from the acquired data, and comparing this set against to the template set in the database. Experimental studies show that Unimodal biometric systems had many disadvantages regarding performance and accuracy. Multimodal biometric systems perform better than unimodal biometric systems and are popular even more complex also. We examine the accuracy and performance of multimodal biometric authentication systems using state of the art Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products. Here we discuss fingerprint and face biometric systems, decision and fusion techniques used in these systems. We also discuss their advantage over unimodal biometric systems.

Background: The differential outcomes procedure (DOP) has proved useful to improve discrimination learning in both animals and humans. Here we adapted DOP to assess its utility to overcome the memory loss commonly associated with normal aging. Methods: In a delayed matching-to-sample task, subjects were exposed to a man's face, and after a delay, they were required to decide if the previously seen face was within a set of six men's faces. For half the subjects, each sample face was paired with its own outcome (differential outcomes condition); outcomes were randomly arranged for the remaining half of subjects (non-differential condition). Either short (5 second) or long (30 second) delays were interposed between the sample and the comparison stimuli. Results: Results showed that relative to younger adults, older adults' performance decreased with the longer delay. However, the use of differential outcomes was able to reverse the detrimental effect of the increased delay in the elderly group, raising their performance to the level shown by younger adults. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate, for the first time, that DOP can help elderly people overcome their memory limitations, and they draw attention to the potential of this procedure as a therapeutic technique.

Solar lentigines are common acquired pigmented lesions on sun-exposed skin. Their histopathological features have been reported as large numbers of melanocytes at the base of clubbed and budding rete ridges. In this study, biopsies were taken from facial solar lentigines in 40 Japanese women, and the sections were stained using hematoxylin-eosin, Fontana-Masson, and immunostained for melanocytes and Langerhans cells in order to verify the histological patterns of Japanese patients. We characterized the histopathological features of solar lentigines on the face and identified two patterns: one pattern (20/40 cases) demonstrated a flattened epidermis with basal melanosis, and the other pattern (20/40 cases) showed epidermal hyperplasia with elongated rete ridges composed of deeply pigmented basaloid cells. The aim of this research was to study the influence of exposure duration and the spatial-frequency composition of faces in a «same-different» judgment task. Subjects had to match two faces presented successively. The recognition rate depended on the spatial-frequency composition of the target face, and on exposure duration only for high-frequency stimuli. This effect was observed only for durations which were greater than Bloch&#39;s psychophysics threshold and only concerned the «same» face pairs. These results are quite consistent with the hypothesis that exposure duration has a differential effect on low and high frequency integration. They are discussed in relation to the single and dual-process models of the «same-different» judgment task (Farell, 1985). Objectives ± To examine the sleep-disordered breathing in patients with Freeman±Sheldon syndrome (FSS). Material and methods ± One night polysomnography was performed for 2 teenage FSS patients. Results ± They showed frequent obstructive sleep apnea exclusively during rapideye-movement sleep. Conclusion ± FSS is a risk factor for the occurrence of sleep disordered breathing.

Polycystin 2 (Pkd2), which belongs to the transient receptor potential family, plays a critical role in development. Pkd2 is mainly localized in the primary cilia, which also function as mechanoreceptors in many cells that influence multiple biological processes including Ca 21 influx, chemical activity and signalling pathways. Mutations in many cilia proteins result in craniofacial abnormalities. Orofacial tissues constantly receive mechanical forces and are known to develop and grow through intricate signalling pathways. Here we investigate the role of Pkd2, whose role remains unclear in craniofacial development and growth. In order to determine the role of Pkd2 in craniofacial development, we located expression in craniofacial tissues and analysed mice with conditional deletion of Pkd2 in neural crest-derived cells, using Wnt1Cre mice. Pkd2 mutants showed many signs of mechanical trauma such as fractured molar roots, distorted incisors, alveolar bone loss and compressed temporomandibular joints, in addition to abnormal skull shapes. Significantly, mutants showed no indication of any of these phenotypes at embryonic stages when heads perceive no significant mechanical stress in utero. The results suggest that Pkd2 is likely to play a critical role in craniofacial growth as a mechanoreceptor. Pkd2 is also identified as one of the genes responsible for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Since facial anomalies have never been identified in ADPKD patients, we carried out three-dimensional photography of patient faces and analysed these using dense surface modelling. This analysis revealed specific characteristics of ADPKD patient faces, some of which correlated with those of the mutant mice.

The role of configural information in gender categorisation was studied by aligning the top half of one face with the bottom half of another. The two faces had the same or different genders. Experiment l shows that participants were slower and made more errors in categorising the gender in either half of these composite faces when the two faces had a different gender, relative to control conditions where the two faces were nonaligned or had the same gender. This result parallels the composite effect for face recognition (Young et al, 1987 Perception16 747–759) and facial-expression recognition (Calder et al, 2000 Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance26 527–551). Similarly to responses to face identity and expression, the composite effect on gender discrimination was disrupted by inverting the faces (experiment 2). Both experiments also show that the composite paradigm is sensitive to general contextual interference in gender categorisation.

To study facial flush after systemic administration of human corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH) we injected 100 lag hCRH intravenously to ten healthy young men. The increase in facial temperature was measured by infrared camera. A significant increase in facial temperature of 1.39°C __+ 0.3 was found within 7 min in all patients, which lasted up to 60 min, although facial flushing was visible in only 50% (5/10) of the probands. In a second experiment 100 tag hCRH was then administered to seven other healthy young men. Intra-and extracerebral blood flow velocity changes in the medial cerebral artery (MCA) and external carotid artery (ECA) were measured after hCRH administration by use of Doppler sonography. We found a decrease of intracerebral blood flow which was caused by hyperventilation and was reversible following 6% CO2 hyperventilation during a second injection of 100 gg hCRH. Blood flow velocity in the ECA increased by 111.5 __ 32.9% (compared to baseline level), lasted up to 60 min after hCRH injection, and was not reversible by 6% end-tidal CO2 ventilation. We thus demonstrated that the direct vasodilatory effect of hCRH involves the ECA-supplied vascular territory only. The intracerebral vasoconstrictory effect represents the result of hyperventilation following hCRH injection. The data thus clearly suggest an interaction of hCRH and the vascular endothelium of the ECA, causing a marked blood flow velocity increase and facial flushing.

This paper consists of development of detection strategies for face recognition tasks and to access its feasibility for forensic analysis using the FERET face database Author has used global feature extraction technique using statistical method for image classification. Facial images of three subjects with different expression and angles are used for classification. Principal Component Analysis has been used for three classes. Mahalanobis distance and Euclidian distance are used as similarity measures and a result of both methods is compared.

■ Special processes recruited during the recognition of personally familiar people have been assumed to reflect the rich episodic and semantic information that selectively represents each person. However, the processes may also include person nonselective ones, which may require interpretation in terms beyond the memory mechanism. To examine this possibility, we assessed decrease in differential activation during the second presentation of an identical face (repetition suppression) as an index of person selectivity. During fMRI, pictures of personally familiar, famous, and unfamiliar faces were presented to healthy subjects who performed a familiarity judgment. Each face was presented once in the first half of the experiment and again in the second half. The right inferior temporal and left inferior frontal gyri were activated during the recognition of both types of familiar faces initially, and this activation was suppressed with repetition. Among preferentially activated regions for personally familiar over famous faces, robust suppression in differential activation was exhibited in the bilateral medial and anterior temporal structures, left amygdala, and right posterior STS, all of which are known to process episodic and semantic information. On the other hand, suppression was minimal in the posterior cingulate, medial prefrontal, right inferior frontal, and intraparietal regions, some of which were implicated in social cognition and cognitive control. Thus, the recognition of personally familiar people is characterized not only by person-selective representation but also by nonselective processes requiring a research framework beyond the memory mechanism, such as a social adaptive response. ■

The effect of rapid maxillary expansion on the mandibular intercanine and intermolar widths during treatment and its stability after retention was studied. In addition, the relationships between the interarch change and the facial types and ages of the subjects of the sample were evaluated. The sample consisted of 17 cases for the study of intercanine width, and 22 nonextraction cases for the study of the intermolar width. Initial, final, at least 2-years postretention models, and initial lateral cephalograms were analyzed. Treatment and postretention changes for the intercanine width and the mesial and distal intermolar widths were calculated and tested for significance. Mean expansions of the intercanine width of 1 .l mm and of the intermolar width of 2.8 mm postretention were found to be statistically significant. There were no correlations found between the amount of increase in arch width and the facial types and ages of the subjects. (AM J 94:296-302.)

In this paper we present a non-intrusive model-based gaze tracking system. The system estimates the 3-D pose of a user's head by tracking as few as six facial feature points. The system locates a human face using a statistical color model without any mark on the face and then finds and tracks the facial features, such as eyes, nostrils and lip corners. A full perspective model is employed to map these feature points onto the 3D pose. Several techniques have been developed to track the features points and recover from failure. We currently achieve a frame rate of 15+ frames per second using an HP 9000 workstation with a framegrabber and a Canon VC-C1 camera. The application of the system has been demonstrated by a gazedriven panorama image viewer. The potential applications of the system include multimodal interfaces, virtual reality and video-teleconferencing.

Interstitial deletions of the proximal short arm of chromosome 3 occurring as constitutional aberrations are rare and a defined clinical phenotype is not established yet. We report on a 30-months-old girl with distinct facial features (square facies, plagiocephaly, broad forehead, broad nasal bridge, long philtrum and low set ears) and psychomotor/speech delay associated with an interstitial deletion of 3p12 chromosomal band, del(3)(p12p12). Clinical manifestations of our child were compared with those of other eight patients with the same deletion previously described to further delineate the proximal 3p deletion syndrome.

Laser scanning is a non-invasive method for three-dimensional assessment of facial morphology and symmetry. The aim of this study was to quantify facial symmetry in healthy adolescents and explore if there is any gender difference. Facial scans of 270 subjects, 123 males and 147 females (aged 15.3 ± 0.1 years, range 14.6 -15.6) , were randomly selected from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Facial scans were processed and analysed using in-house developed subroutines for commercial software. The surface matching between the original face and its mirror image was measured for the whole face, upper, middle, and lower facial thirds. In addition, 3 angular and 14 linear parameters were measured. The percentage of symmetry of the whole face was signifi cantly lower in males (53.49 ± 10.73 per cent) than in females (58.50 ± 10.27 per cent; P < 0.01). There was no statistically signifi cant difference in the amount of symmetry among facial thirds within each gender ( P > 0.05). Average values of linear parameters were less than 1 mm and did not differ signifi cantly between genders ( P > 0.05). One angular parameter showed slight lip line asymmetry in both genders. Faces of male 15-year-old adolescents were less symmetric than those of females, but the difference in the amount of symmetry, albeit statistically signifi cant, may not be clinically relevant. Upper, middle, and lower thirds of the face did not differ in the amount of three-dimensional symmetry. Angular and linear parameters of facial symmetry did not show any gender difference.

User verification systems that use a single biometric indicator often have to contend with noisy sensor data, restricted degrees of freedom, non-universality of the biometric trait and unacceptable error rates. Attempting to improve the performance of individual matchers in such situations may not prove to be effective because of these inherent problems. Multibiometric systems seek to alleviate some of these drawbacks by providing multiple evidences of the same identity. These systems help achieve an increase in performance that may not be possible using a single biometric indicator. Further, multibiometric systems provide anti-spoofing measures by making it difficult for an intruder to spoof multiple biometric traits simultaneously. However, an effective fusion scheme is necessary to combine the information presented by multiple domain experts. This paper addresses the problem of information fusion in biometric verification systems by combining information at the matching score level. Experimental results on combining three biometric modalities (face, fingerprint and hand geometry) are presented.

Numerous studies suggest a cognitive bias for threat-related material in delusional ideation. However, few studies have examined this bias using a memory task. We investigated the influence of delusion-proneness on identity and expression memory for angry and happy faces. Participants high and low in delusion-proneness were presented with happy and angry faces and were later asked to recognise the same faces displaying a neutral expression. They also had to remember what the initial expressions of the faces had been. Remember/know/guess judgments were asked for both identity and expression memory. Results showed that delusion-prone participants better recognised the identity of angry faces compared to non-delusional participants. Also, this difference between the two groups was mainly due to a greater number of remember responses in delusion-prone participants. These findings extend previous studies by showing that delusions are associated with a memory bias for threat-related stimuli. r

Attentional biases in the processing of threatening facial expressions in social anxiety are well documented. It is generally assumed that these attentional biases originate in an evaluative bias: socially threatening information would be evaluated more negatively by socially anxious individuals. However, three studies have failed to evidence a negative evaluative bias in the processing of emotional facial expression (EFE) in socially anxious individuals. These studies however suffer from several methodological limitations that the present study has attempted to overcome. Twenty-one out-patients diagnosed with generalized social phobia have been compared to 20 out-patients diagnosed with another anxiety disorder and with 39 normal controls matched for gender, age and level of education. They had to decode on seven emotion intensity scales a set of 40 EFE whose intensity and emotional nature were manipulated. Although sufficient statistical power was ensured, no differences among groups could be found in terms of decoding accuracy, attributed emotion intensity, or reported difficulty of the task. Based on these findings as well as on other evidences, we propose that, if they exist, evaluative biases in social anxiety should be implicit and automatic and that they might be determined by the relevance of the stimulus to the person's concern rather than by the stimulus valence. The implications of these findings for the interpersonal processes involved in social phobia are discussed. r

There exists an abundance of systems and algorithms for multiple target detection and tracking in video, and many measures for evaluating the quality of their output have been proposed. The contribution of this paper lies in the following: first, it argues that such performance measures should have two fundamental properties -monotonicity and error type differentiability; second, it shows that the recently proposed measures do not have either of these properties and are thus less usable; third, it composes a set of simple measures, partly built on common practice, that does have these properties. The informativeness of the proposed set of performance measures is demonstrated through their application on face detection and tracking results.

Although unwanted facial hair often leads to anxiety and avoidance of social situations, evaluation of treatment outcomes in clinical trials has relied largely on measures external to the patient such as the extent of hair growth or an expert physician's assessment, neglecting to include patient reported outcomes (PRO). To assess the level of bother caused by a dermatological condition (hirsutism) and changes brought on by treatment, the instrument ESTEEM was developed by expanding the Bother Assessment in Skin Conditions (BASC) scale to six questions to cover the discomfort felt in four social situations and bother due to removing facial hair. Each question elicits responses on a visual analog scale. Women participating in two randomized clinical trials evaluated a new treatment (eflornithine 13.9% cream). Analyses examined the level of bother at each visit, the changes with treatment, the correlations with the Physician's Global Assessment, and the effect size. Hirsutism bothers patients considerably. The mean for overall bother was 89% and the mean discomfort in social situations exceeded 80% in nearly all cases. Treatment led to significant reductions in bother on all six items with effect sizes ranging from 0.46 to 1.62. Eflornithine is an effective treatment for unwanted facial hair in women, as reported by the patients. ESTEEM addresses the specific concerns of women with hirsutism.

We report an eight years female child with clinical and molecular cytogenetic findings consistent with CATCH 22 syndrome characterized by cardiac defect, typical facial dysmorphism, mental deficiency and chromosome 22 q11.2 deletion. Interphase FISH with 22q 11.2 probe demonstrated hemizygous deletion in 98.5% nuclei. Interphase FISH for diagnosis of CATCH 22 syndrome has not been reported previously from India to our knowledge.

We present the first three-dimensional calculations of Radiation Driven Implosion of Molecular Clouds including self-gravity and ionization. We discuss the effects of initial density perturbations on the dynamics of ionizing globules and show that the onset of gravitational collapse can be significantly delayed for a multiple of the implosion timescale. We demonstrate that Radiation Driven Implosion could be an efficient process for injecting disordered kinetic energy into molecular clouds in the vicinity of massive stars.

The extent to which the brain regions associated with face processing are selective for that specific function remains controversial. In addition, little is known regarding the extent to which face-responsive brain regions are selective for human faces. To study regional selectivity of face processing, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine whole brain activation in response to human faces, dog faces, and houses. Fourteen healthy right-handed volunteers participated in a passive viewing, blocked experiment. Results indicate that the lateral fusiform gyrus (Brodmann's area 37) responds maximally to both dog and human faces when compared with other sites, followed by the middle/inferior occipital gyrus (BA 18/19). Sites that were activated by houses versus dog and human faces included the medial fusiform gyrus (BA 19/37), the posterior cingulate (BA 30), and the superior occipital gyrus (BA 19). The only site that displayed significant differences in activation between dog and human faces was the lingual/medial fusiform gyrus. In this site, houses elicited the strongest activation, followed by dog faces, while the response to human faces was negligible and did not differ from fixation. The parahippocampal gyrus/amygdala was the sole site that displayed significant activation to human faces, but not to dog faces or houses. D

In human mate choice, sexually dimorphic faces and voices comprise hormone-mediated cues that purportedly develop as an indicator of mate quality or the ability to compete with samesex rivals. If preferences for faces communicate the same biologically relevant information as do voices, then ratings of these cues should correlate. Sixty participants (30 male and 30 female) rated a series of opposite-sex faces, voices, and faces together with voices for attractiveness in a repeated measures computer-based experiment. The effects of face and voice attractiveness on face-voice compound stimuli were analyzed using a multilevel model. Faces contributed proportionally more than voices to ratings of face-voice compound attractiveness. Faces and voices positively and independently contributed to the attractiveness of male compound stimuli although there was no significant correlation between their rated attractiveness. A positive interaction and correlation between attractiveness was shown for faces and voices in relation to the attractiveness of female compound stimuli. Rather than providing a better estimate of a single characteristic, male faces and voices may instead communicate independent information that, in turn, provides a female with a better assessment of overall mate quality. Conversely, female faces and voices together provide males with a more accurate assessment of a single dimension of mate quality.

The aim was to develop a comprehensive screening instrument for evaluation of orofacial dysfunction that was easy to perform for different health professionals without special equipment. The Nordic Orofacial Test--Screening (NOT-S), consisting of a structured interview and clinical examination,was developed with a picture manual illustrating the different tasks in the examination. It was first tested in a Swedish version, and later translated to other Nordic languages, and to English. The interview reflected six domains, (I) Sensory function, (II) Breathing, (III) Habits, (IV) Chewing and swallowing, (V) Drooling, and (VI) Dryness of the mouth, and the examination included six domains representing (1) The face at rest, and tasks regarding (2) Nose breathing, (3) Facial expression, (4) Masticatory muscle and jaw function, (5) Oral motor function, and (6) Speech.
