This paper is aimed to study the nature of iron(III)–saccharide interactions in complexes and to ... more This paper is aimed to study the nature of iron(III)–saccharide interactions in complexes and to look for new iron-containing drugs for supplementing organisms. Iron(III)-saccharide complexes were synthesized by reacting FeCl3 and saccharides (rice starch, sucrose, and dextran) in basic solutions and their characteristics were compared with synthetic iron-oxide. Both crystalline and amorphous iron(III) complexes were obtained and identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Amorphous samples were chosen to investigate the interactions between iron(III) and saccharides by continuous-flow dissolution experiments. In acidic solution, the rate of iron release from amorphous iron complexes increased with the following order: iron-rice starch≈iron-oxide≪iron-sucrose≈iron-dextran. The colloidal structure of iron-rice starch was proposed to describe its similar dissolution profile with that of iron-oxide.

A novel method for fabricating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles was achieved by using transparen... more A novel method for fabricating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles was achieved by using transparent vermicelli template as a new stabilizing material. The morphology of the as-prepared magnetic iron oxide deposited on the surface of vermicelli was observed as nanoclusters. The magnetization of the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles at room temperature was decreased after carbonization at 200 °C. Therefore the thermal decomposition of iron oxide nanoparticles stabilized by starch vermicelli template yielded iron oxide/carbon nanocomposites with the soft magnetic behavior which are useful for biomedical applications.

This phenomenon was illustrated by the observed enhancement of the rate of reaction by in situ generated Au-rich bimetallic Au/Pd nanoclusters.

Propylsulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica SBA-15 has been synthesized via one-step str... more Propylsulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica SBA-15 has been synthesized via one-step strategy at 130°C based on the co-condensation of TEOS and MPTMS in the presence of Pluronic 123 polymer and H₂O₂ in HCl aqueous solution. The synthesized solid exhibited hydrothermal stability in boiling water without significant change in textural properties. The catalytic performance of the synthesized solid was studied in the esterification of oleic acid with methanol. The experimental results revealed that the large mesopore structures of SBA-15-PrSO₃H solid synthesized at 130°C could favor a facile access of oleic acid to the acid sites, making the comparable activity to that of phenyl ethyl sulfonic acid functionalized silica and higher than that of dry amberlyst-15.

ABSTRACT An efficient method for the Ullmann coupling of chloropyridines catalyzed by poly(N-viny... more ABSTRACT An efficient method for the Ullmann coupling of chloropyridines catalyzed by poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-stabilized bimetallic Au-Pd alloy nanoclusters (NCs) under ambient conditions is demonstrated. The reaction does not occur with either gold or palladium single-metal clusters alone, nor with a physical mixture of the two metals. The experimental results indicate that the inclusion of Au as a nearest heteroatom is crucial to initiate the coupling and its composition up to 50% is essential to accelerate the reaction. Unlike the conventional transition metal catalysis, 2-chloropyridine was found to be highly reactive as compared to 2-bromopyridine. From the UV-vis and ICP-AES measurements, a significant amount of leached Pd(II) was observed in the coupling with 2-bromopyridine as compared with 2-chloropyridine, indicating that the leaching process might be a crucial factor in diminishing the reactivity.

A plausible mechanism involves autoxidation of thiol to generate hydrogen peroxide in situ, which converts phenylboronic acid into phenol under basic conditions. Since thiols are often utilized as protective ligands for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), this result is a warning that excess thiols and free thiols liberated from the Au surface could participate in aerobic oxidations catalyzed by thiol-protected AuNPs.
