The penetration of phenoxyethanol, dodecyl decaethoxylate and dodecyl monoethoxylate through rat skin was described in in vitro model systems using static cells with aqueous ethanol as receptor or flow-through diffusion cells with tissue culture medium as receptor. Absorption of 2-phenoxyethanol was similar in the static (64%) and flow-through diffusion cells (43%) suggesting that the choice of receptor fluid did not greatly influence prediction of penetration for this compound although the rate of absorption was higher in the static than flow-through cell, which reduced overall losses. A similar absorption was noted if evaporative losses were taken into consideration (static cell, 94%: flow-through diffusion cell, 85%). Dodecyl decaethoxylate absorption was influenced by the choice of receptor fluid; the absorption was 49.4% with aqueous ethanol, but was only 7% with tissue culture medium. However, using tissue culture medium as receptor, more material was located in the stratum corneum and skin than with aqueous ethanol. The highly lipophilic dodecyl monoethoxylate was rapidly absorbed into the lipophilic aqueous ethanol receptor fluid with total penetration of 102% at 8 hours. However, penetration to tissue culture medium was much lower in the flow-through diffusion cell. When stratum corneum, skin and receptor fluid were included in the estimate of penetration, total absorption was 33.3%, which increased to 66% when evaporative losses were considered. In conclusion, absorption profiles reflected the physicochemical properties of the ethoxylates, and the choice of receptor fluid appeared to be the most important factor in the choice of an in vitro model for predicting percutaneous absorption.

A dimethylferrocene-mediated enzyme electrode for glucose (Cass et al., 1984) was evaluated for application to microbial fermentation monitoring and control. The deficiencies revealed-insufficient stability, progressive increase in response time and progressive decrease in linear range-were investigated using electrochemical and radiochemical techniques. The enzyme immobilization was improved with a novel procedure using periodate-oxidized glucose oxidase and an alkylamine electrode coating. An in-situ probe and a computer-controlled analytical system were developed for fermentation monitoring. The glucose concentration of an Escherichia coli batch culture was successfully monitored on line using this analytical system.

Objective. This investigation aims to determine (1) whether shockwave treatment helps fracture healing and (2) whether the effect of shockwave treatment on fracture healing is dose dependent. Design. Shockwave was applied over tibial osteotomy in an animal model to assess its effect on the healing of the fracture. Methodology. Bilateral tibial diaphyseal transverse osteotomy was conducted on 42 rabbits, dividing into experimental and control group, immobilized using an external skeletal fixator, with one leg tested with shockwave therapy and the contralateral leg acting as the control without therapy. Serial radiography and measurement of bone mineral density via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were performed to assess the fracture healing. The experimental animals had two or three sessions of shockwave therapy (5000 impulses, 0.32 mJ/mm 2 , Orthopedice) over the osteotomy sites on day 7, 21 and 35; while the control group did not receive any treatment. The animals were sacrificed on day 42 or 56. Then, bilateral tibias were harvested and sent for mechanical tests as well as the histological examination. The pertinent statistic methods were applied to analyze the results. Background. Shockwave therapy has become a useful alternative approach in treating various orthopedic conditions, but the mechanism which it works remains unclear. Thus far, shockwave therapy has been found effective in treating long bone pseudoarthrosis, but whether it can benefit fresh fracture healing continues to be debated. Results. Higher union rates occurred during the early but not the late stages in the experimental group, while mechanical strength was higher in the experimental group than in the control group. No significant dose-dependent response occurred between the second and third applications of shockwave treatment. No significant difference in mechanical strength occurred between the experimental groups at 4 weeks and the control group at 6 weeks, or between the experimental groups at 6 and 8 weeks. Furthermore, no significant correlation occurred between the absolute values of maximum torque and bone mineral density. Conclusion. Based on this investigation, shockwave treatment has a positive effect on early fracture healing while its long term effects require further investigation. Relevance Shockwave therapy can be a useful alternative adjunct modality in the treatment of fresh long bone fracture.

h i g h l i g h t s Results of bending tests on RC slabs strengthened with SRP/SRG systems are presented. Number of layers and steel tape density are the main study parameters. Slabs strengthened with SRG and SRP systems have shown comparable strength increases. Fracture and debonding of the SRP/SRG system were both experienced during tests. Analytical predictions of the ultimate bending moment are presented and discussed.

Aims: To determine the prevalence and risk factors for painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN) and evaluate sleep impairment and quality of life in patients with PDPN. Methods: Data from the Korean Diabetes Association Neuropathy Study Group were used to evaluate 3999 patients with type 2 diabetes. PDPN was diagnosed using visual analogue scales (VAS) and medical history. The patients were asked to answer the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF), Medical Outcomes Study Sleep (MOS-Sleep) Scale, EuroQol (EQ-5D), and VAS. Results: Among the patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (n = 1338), 577 (43.1%) were diagnosed with PDPN (14.4% of all patients with type 2 diabetes). PDPN was independently associated with age, female gender, fasting plasma glucose, hypertension, and previous cerebrovascular events. All pain severity and interference measures were higher in patients with PDPN than in non-PDPN patients, and patients with PDPN reported more impaired sleep and lower EQ-5D and VAS scores. Conclusions: The prevalence of PDPN in Koreans was comparable to that in Western populations. PDPN may impair sleep and quality of life compared with non-PDPN, and physicians should carefully consider pain symptoms in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

In the current review we focus on the opportunity to use brackish water in the cultivation of floricultural plants, plants for which, due to their high economic value, growers have traditionally used good quality water for irrigation. Now, even for these crops the use of alternative water sources for irrigating nursery plants is needed because of the limited supplies of fresh water in many countries; understanding how saline water can be used will also enhance sustainable development in floriculture. While salt stress usually reduces plant growth, any such reduction might not be negative for ornamentals, where shoot vigour is sometime undesirable, although on flower crops salt stress can delay flowering or decrease flower quality characteristics. However, a decrease in growth rate is not enough to characterize the salt tolerance of ornamental plants, but traits like tip and marginal leaf burn, as consequence of sodium and chlorine accumulation, have to be considered for their effects on aesthetical value. With this in mind, some halophytes should be considered for floriculture because of their ability to cope with saline environments; their potential to tolerate salt is an important factor in reducing production costs. Consequently, the identification of ornamental halophytes is important for producing a commercially acceptable crop when irrigated with brackish waters. Many aspects of a plant's reaction to salt are genetically determined, so selection of suitable genotypes or breeding for salt tolerance in ornamentals are interesting options. Developing salt-tolerant floricultural crops, together with typical management practices that avoid excessive salinity stress in the root media, will provide the grower with economically and environmentally sound wastewater reuse options.

Few studies have estimated screen time among Arab adolescents, and no studies, to date, have published data on addiction to video games or Internet games among Arab adolescents. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of addiction to video games and its correlation with mental health in a sample of expatriate high school students from the Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The survey was conducted in 2016 among 276 students enrolled in ninth through twelfth grades in the International Schools in Buraidah, Al-Qassim. Students who returned signed consent forms from their parents filled out a self-administered questionnaire that included validated scales on addiction to video games, general health, and lifestyle. Any dynamic decision model needs to deal with conditional events and conditional uncertainty measures. Moreover, to avoid the introduction of not available information in decision processes, we should refer to domains containing only the elements of interest. According to the aforementioned guidelines we study the comparative uncertainty framework for decision models referring to possibility and necessity measures: we consider binary relations, defined on an arbitrary set of conditional events and we provide a complete characterization in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions for their representability by a conditional possibility and by a conditional necessity.

As the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic marches unrelentingly, more patients with cardiac arrhythmias are emerging due to the effects of the virus on the respiratory and cardiovascular (CV) systems and the systemic inflammation that it incurs, and also as a result of the proarrhythmic effects of COVID-19 pharmacotherapies and other drug interactions and the associated autonomic imbalance that enhance arrhythmogenicity. The most worrisome of all arrhythmogenic mechanisms is the QT prolonging effect of various anti-COVID pharmacotherapies that can lead to polymorphic ventricular tachycardia in the form of torsade des pointes and sudden cardiac death. It is therefore imperative to monitor the QT interval during treatment; however, conventional approaches to such monitoring increase the transmission risk for the staff and strain the health system. Hence, there is dire need for contactless monitoring and telemetry for inpatients, especially those admitted to the intensive care unit, as well as for outpatients needing continued management. In this context, recent technological advances have ushered in a new era in implementing digital health monitoring tools that circumvent these obstacles. All these issues are herein discussed and a large body of recent relevant data are reviewed.

This paper seeks to clarify and refine the relationship between strategic and internal green marketing and firm competitiveness. Despite the significance of corporate environmental strategy to firms adopting a triple-bottom line performance evaluation, there is insufficient focus on strategic green marketing and its impact on a firm's competitiveness. This study fills the gap by providing a comprehensive view of strategic green marketing and its impact on competitive advantage. Findings also reveal the moderating role of internal green marketing actions towards the development of a sustained competitive advantage. Specifically, the findings build on contemporary green marketing literature suggesting that a significant interplay between strategy and people exists which enhances the creation of competitive advantage. This in turn increases financial performance. Finally, this research uses an updated approach to build on current literature concerning the drivers and outcomes of 1 strategic green marketing. This provides managers with nuanced insights about environmentally-driven competitive advantage.

The hydraulic performances of a 3-bladed inducer, designed at Alta, Pisa, Italy, are investigated both experimentally and numerically. The 3D numerical model developed in ANSYS CFX to simulate the flow through the inducer and different lengths of its inlet/outlet ducts is illustrated. The influence of the inlet/outlet boundary conditions, of the turbulence models, and of the location of inlet/outlet different pressure taps on the evaluation of the hydraulic performance of the inducer is analyzed. As expected, the predicted hydraulic performance of the inducer is significantly affected by the lengths of the inlet/outlet duct portions included in the computations, as well as by the turbulent flow model and the locations of the inlet/outlet pressure taps. It is slightly affected by the computational boundary conditions and better agreement with the test data obtained when adopting the-turbulence model. From the point of the pressure tap locations, the pressure rise coefficient is much higher when the inlet/outlet static pressure taps were chosen in the same locations used in the experiments.

In established Australian vineyards compacted soil either created naturally or by trafficking prevents root growth to desirable depths and restricts root systems from getting water and nutrients. This can reduce the life span and productivity of grapevines considerably over a period of years. To break up these compacted soil layers using small tractors a deep working oscillatory ripper was developed at University of South Australia which had two deep working oscillating tines. One of the most important factors for the performance of this oscillatory ripper is the oscillation angle of the tines which is described as the relationship between tine pivot point and tine tip. To find the optimum oscillation angle a series of field tests were conducted in a sand-loam soil at 6 different oscillation angles. The tines oscillated at a frequency of 4.9 Hz and with amplitudes of between ±60-69mm, with a nominal forward speed of 3 km/h. The trial results are quantified based on draft requirement, power saving, power ratio and loosened area. The greatest draft reduction of 50% was achieved for negative oscillation angles, where power ratio was less than one. Power saving was significantly affected by changing oscillation angle. In general, vibration of the driver seat was higher for negative angles. In terms of performance-22.5º oscillation angle was the optimum for draft reduction and power saving, whereas the least vibration was obtained at an oscillation angle of +16º which was equal to Australian Standard threshold for 8 hours continuous work.

INTRODUCTION Despite the serious behavioral consequences faced by individuals with sexual compulsivity, related neuropsychological studies are sparse. AIM To compare decision making and cognitive flexibility at baseline and after exposure to an erotic video in sexually compulsive participants and non-sexually compulsive controls. METHODS The sample consisted of 30 sexually compulsive men and 30 controls. Cognitive flexibility was investigated through the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and decision making was examined through the Iowa Gambling Task. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Wisconsin Card Sorting Test categories, correct responses, and perseverative errors and Iowa Gambling Task general trends and blocks. RESULTS Sexually compulsive subjects and controls performed similarly at baseline. After watching an erotic video, controls performed better in block 1 of the Iowa Gambling Task (P = .01) and had more correct responses on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (P = .01). Ethiopian shade coffee plantations are well documented to be bird-friendly and act as refuges for disappearing tree species. The extent to which these plantations support mammal conservation, as well as mammal sensitivity to coffee intensification, remain little studied. We studied the distribution and diversity of mammals under three coffee management systems of differing intensities (i.e., semi-forest, semi-plantation, and plantation) and in nearby natural forests in Belete-Gera Forest Priority Area, southwestern Ethiopia. We detected mammals using 30 infrared camera traps at 90 stations for a total of 4142 camera days. We used the Shannon-Wiener diversity index for diversity analysis, generalized linear mixed model for comparison of independent detection, and non-metric multidimensional scaling to show the mammalian community composition. We recorded 8815 digital videos and a total of 23 mammal species. The overall species richness, diversity, and detection of mammals did not differ between the two traditional shade coffee management systems and the natural forest but was lower in the plantation coffee system. The mammal community composition also shows variation in resilience to coffee management intensity, with primates appearing to be generally more tolerant to management intensification. We ultimately show that traditionally managed Ethiopian shade coffee farms shelter diverse mammal communities, comparable to those in nearby natural forests. Therefore, supporting traditional coffee management practices and certifying them as mammal-friendly should be implemented as strategies for the conservation of mammals, as natural forests continue to decline in Ethiopia.

To improve water saving and conservation in irrigated agriculture, a range of field evaluation experiments was carried out with various furrow irrigation treatments in cotton fields to estimate the possibilities of improving furrow irrigation performances under conditions of Central Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan. The research consisted in comparing surge and continuous-flow in long furrows and adopting alternate-furrow irrigation. The best results were achieved with surge-flow irrigation applied to alternate furrows. Field data allowed the calibration of a surface irrigation model that was used to identify alternative management issues. Results identified the need to better adjust inflow rates to soil infiltration conditions, cutoff times to the soil water deficits and improving irrigation scheduling. The best irrigation water productivity (0.61 kg m À3) was achieved with surge-flow on alternate furrows, which reduced irrigation water use by 44% (390 mm) and led to high application efficiency, near 85%. Results demonstrated the possibility for applying deficit irrigation in this region.

The hammock positioning within the incubators simulates the intrauterine environment, however, there is little evidence of its benefits and possible risks. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of hammock positioning on behavioral status, vital signs, and pain in very low birth weight preterm newborns. This is a quasi-experimental/case series study in which premature infants (<1500g) were positioned in supine for one hour in a hammock. The preterm newborns were assessed 10min before, during (2, 20, 40, and 60min), and 10min after hammock positioning with the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, vital signs and pain by the Neonatal Facial Coding System. 28 preterm infants between 28 and 36 weeks of gestational age were evaluated. Objective: In the intent-to-treat analysis of the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children With ADHD (MTA), the effects of medication management (MedMgt), behavior therapy (Beh), their combination (Comb), and usual community care (CC) differed at 14 and 24 months due to superiority of treatments that used the MTA medication algorithm (Comb+MedMgt) over those that did not (Beh+CC). This report examines 36-month outcomes, 2 years after treatment by the study ended. Method: For primary outcome measures (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] and oppositional defiant disorder [ODD] symptoms, social skills, reading scores, impairment, and diagnostic status), mixed-effects regression models and orthogonal contrasts examined 36-month outcomes. Results: At 3 years, 485 of the original 579 subjects (83.8%) participated in the follow-up, now at ages 10 to 13 years, (mean 11.9 years). In contrast to the significant advantage of MedMgt+Comb over Beh+CC for ADHD symptoms at 14 and 24 months, treatment groups did not differ significantly on any measure at 36 months. The percentage of children taking medication 950% of the time changed between 14 and 36 months across the initial treatment groups: Beh significantly increased (14% to 45%), MedMed+Comb significantly decreased (91% to 71%), and CC remained constant (60%Y62%). Regardless of their treatment use changes, all of the groups showed symptom improvement over baseline. Notably, initial symptom severity, sex (male), comorbidity, public assistance, and parental psychopathology (ADHD) did not moderate children's 36-month treatment responses, but these factors predicted worse outcomes over 36 months, regardless of original treatment assignment. Conclusions: By 36 months, the earlier advantage of having had 14 months of the medication algorithm was no longer apparent, possibly due to age-related decline in ADHD symptoms, changes in medication management intensity, starting or stopping medications altogether, or other factors not yet evaluated.

Background Ending the global tobacco epidemic is a defining challenge in global health. Timely and comprehensive estimates of the prevalence of smoking tobacco use and attributable disease burden are needed to guide tobacco control efforts nationally and globally. Methods We estimated the prevalence of smoking tobacco use and attributable disease burden for 204 countries and territories, by age and sex, from 1990 to 2019 as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study. We modelled multiple smoking-related indicators from 3625 nationally representative surveys. We completed systematic reviews and did Bayesian meta-regressions for 36 causally linked health outcomes to estimate non-linear dose-response risk curves for current and former smokers. We used a direct estimation approach to estimate attributable burden, providing more comprehensive estimates of the health effects of smoking than previously available. Findings Globally in 2019, 1•14 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1•13-1•16) individuals were current smokers, who consumed 7•41 trillion (7•11-7•74) cigarette-equivalents of tobacco in 2019. Although prevalence of smoking had decreased significantly since 1990 among both males (27•5% [26•5-28•5] reduction) and females (37•7% [35•4-39•9] reduction) aged 15 years and older, population growth has led to a significant increase in the total number of smokers from 0•99 billion (0•98-1•00) in 1990. Globally in 2019, smoking tobacco use accounted for 7•69 million (7•16-8•20) deaths and 200 million (185-214) disability-adjusted life-years, and was the leading risk factor for death among males (20•2% [19•3-21•1] of male deaths). 6•68 million [86•9%] of 7•69 million deaths attributable to smoking tobacco use were among current smokers. Interpretation In the absence of intervention, the annual toll of 7•69 million deaths and 200 million disability-adjusted life-years attributable to smoking will increase over the coming decades. Substantial progress in reducing the prevalence of smoking tobacco use has been observed in countries from all regions and at all stages of development, but a large implementation gap remains for tobacco control. Countries have a clear and urgent opportunity to pass strong, evidencebased policies to accelerate reductions in the prevalence of smoking and reap massive health benefits for their citizens. Whole body vibration (WBV) is a promising tool for counteracting bone loss. Most WBV studies on animals have been performed at acceleration <1g and frequency between 30 and 90Hz. Such WBV conditions trigger bone growth in osteopenia models, but not in healthy animals. In order to test the ability of WBV to promote osteogenesis in young animals, we exposed seven-week-old male mice to vibration at 90Hz and 2g peak acceleration for 15min/day, 5 days/week. We examined the effects on skeletal tissues with micro-computed tomography and histology. We also quantified bone vascularization and mechanosensitive osteocyte proteins, sclerostin and DMP1. Three weeks of WBV resulted in an increase of femur cortical thickness (+5%) and area (+6%), associated with a 25% decrease of sclerostin expression, and 35% increase of DMP1 expression in cortical osteocytes. Carduus species (Compositae) are widely distributed in the Mediterranean area, and traditionally used for both food and medicinal purposes. The hydroalcoholic extracts of four wild edible Carduus species collected in Sardinia (Carduus argyroa Biv., Carduus nutans subsp. macrocephalus (Desf.) Nyman, Carduus pycnocephalus L., Carduus cephalanthus Viv.) were analyzed and characterized by HPLC-PDA-MS/MS and PCR-RFLP of the nrDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS). Flavonoids and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives were the predominant classes of secondary metabolites characterizing the extracts. The ITS region was sequenced in parallel, and a PCR-RFLP method was applied with three selective restriction enzymes. Statistical analyses, on both chemical and biomolecular results, revealed that individuals clustered according to their taxonomic classification. The combination of the two techniques discriminates the four species within the genus, giving further information on these little-investigated plants, traditionally used in the Mediterranean area and in Sardinia.

The functional properties as well the physicochemical properties of watermelon seed and seed-oil were analyzed. The functional properties of the seed revealed that oil and water absorption capacities for the seed were 123.5 ± 0.5 % and 116.3 ± 0.1%. The foaming capacity and stability (after 2 hr) in % were found to be 23.5± 0.1% and 62.5± 0.2% respectively while emulsion stability gave 0.325± 0.001%. Physicochemical properties of the oil extract from the seed using soxhlet extractor revealed the followings; iodine and acid values in mgKOH/g and saponification value in mgKOH/100g were 148.5 ± 0.5, 74.5 ± 0.5 and 3.4 ± 0.1 respectively. Peroxide value of the oil was found to be 2.8± 0.1meq/kg while specific gravity determination gave 0.91. The low acid, iodine and peroxide values of the oil coupled with favourable functional properties makes the seed and the oil suitable for human consumption and therefore the result of this research work would provide further information on the domestic and industrial usage of the seed and seed-oil.

The present research examined the argumentation skills that Egyptian lawyers use in courtrooms, and whether these skills differ by litigation type. Using content analysis of a sample consisted of 94 written pleadings, results indicated that Egyptian lawyers used many different argumentation skills in courtrooms in order to present their evidence or interpret the opponent's evidence. In addition, the results indicated that these skills differed by litigation type. The results and tits implications were discussed in light of previous studies.

Spiritual, existential, and psychological issues represent central components of quality of life (QOL) in palliative care. A better understanding of the dynamic underlying these components is essential for the development of interventions tailored to the palliative context. The aims were to explore (i) the relationship between spirituality, meaning in life, wishes for hastened death and psychological distress in palliative patients, and (ii) the extent to which these non-physical determinants influence QOL. Misunderstood ironic intents may injure the conversation and impede connecting with others. Prior research suggests that ironic compliments, a rarer type of irony, are considered less ironic when spoken with a foreign accent. Using more ecologically-valid stimuli with natural prosodic cues, we found that this effect also applied to ironic criticisms, not just to ironic compliments. English native speakers (N = 96) listened to dialogs between Canadian English speakers and their foreign-accented peers, rating targets on multiple scales (irony, certainty in the speaker's intent, appropriateness, and offensiveness). Generalized additive mixed modelling showed that 1) ironic comments were rated lower for irony when foreign-accented, whereas literal comments were unaffected by accent; 2) the listener's political orientation, but not empathy or need for cognitive closure, modulated irony detection accuracy. The results are discussed in terms of linguistic expectations, social distance, cultural stereotypes, and personality differences.

Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common infections associated with health care, but its importance as a global health priority is not fully understood. We quantified the burden of SSI after gastrointestinal surgery in countries in all parts of the world. This international, prospective, multicentre cohort study included consecutive patients undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection within 2-week time periods at any health-care facility in any country. The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) provides an ideal framework to establish multi-disciplinary research networks. COST Action BM1203 (EU-ROS) represents a consortium of researchers from different disciplines who are dedicated to providing new insights and tools for better understanding redox biology and medicine and, in the long run, to finding new therapeutic strategies to target dysregulated redox processes in various diseases. This report highlights the major achievements of EU-ROS as well as research updates and new perspectives arising from its members. The EU-ROS consortium comprised more than 140 active members who worked together for four years on the topics briefly described below. The Covid-19 lockdown implemented globally to prevent the spread of the virus has led to the closure of schools. However, insight into the impact of the lockdown on private schools and the responses it has elicited is limited, especially across the African continent. This article examines the impact of the lockdown on private basic schools in Ghana and how they responded to the closure. Following "organizational ambidexterity" and qualitative interviews with nine proprietors of private schools in Ghana, the study found that the schools' closure had a negative impact on private basic schools in five crucial ways: disruption to teaching and learning, difficulty in retrieving unpaid teaching fees, inability to pay staff salaries and statutory payments, underutilization of existing assets, and the cost of storing unused stock. The article offers suggestions to the government to support private schools that are broadening educational access at thin profit margins.
