Machine translation is the process of translating text from one language to another. In this pape... more Machine translation is the process of translating text from one language to another. In this paper, Statistical Machine Translation is done on Assamese and English language by taking their respective parallel corpus. A statistical phrase based translation toolkit Moses is used here. To develop the language model and to align the words we used two another tools IRSTLM, GIZA respectively. BLEU score is used to check our translation system performance, how good it is. A difference in BLEU scores is obtained while translating sentences from Assamese to English and vice-versa. Since Indian languages are morphologically very rich hence translation is relatively harder from English to Assamese resulting in a low BLEU score. A statistical transliteration system is also introduced with our translation system to deal basically with proper nouns, OOV (out of vocabulary) words which are not present in our corpus.

Location-based Sentiment Analysis of 2019 Nigeria Presidential Election using a Voting Ensemble Approach

He was issued a Certificate of Return and was sworn in on 29 May 2019. However, there were claims of widespread hoax by the opposition. The sentiment analysis captures the opinions of the masses over social media for global events. In this paper, we use 2019 Nigeria presidential election tweets to perform sentiment analysis through the application of a voting ensemble approach (VEA) in which the predictions from multiple techniques are combined to find the best polarity of a tweet (sentence). This is to determine public views on the 2019 Nigeria Presidential elections and compare them with actual election results. Our sentiment analysis experiment is focused on location-based viewpoints where we used Twitter location data. For this experiment, we live-streamed Nigeria 2019 election tweets via Twitter API to create tweets dataset of 583816 size, pre-processed the data, and applied VEA by utilizing three different Sentiment Classifiers to obtain the choicest polarity of a given tweet. Furthermore, we segmented our tweets dataset into Nigerian states and geopolitical zones, then plotted state-wise and geopolitical-wise user sentiments towards Buhari and Atiku and their political parties. The overall objective of the use of states/geopolitical zones is to evaluate the similarity between the sentiment of location-based tweets compared to actual election results. The results reveal that whereas there are election outcomes that coincide with the sentiment expressed on Twitter social media in most cases as shown by the polarity scores of different locations, there are also some election results where our location analysis similarity test failed.

In this research paper, we have presented present an algorithmic Information Retrieval System(BIRS) based on information and the system is significant mathematically and statistically. This paper is demonstrated by two algorithms for finding out the lemmatization of Bengali words such as Trie and Dictionary Based Search by Removing Affix (DBSRA) as well as compared with Edit Distance for the exact lemmatization. We have presented the Bengali Anaphora resolution system using the Hobbs' algorithm to get the correct expression of information. As the actions of questions answering algorithms, the TF-IDF and Cosine Similarity are developed to find out the accurate answer from the documents. In this study, we have introduced a Bengali Language Toolkit (BLTK) and Bengali Language Expression (BRE) that make the easiest implication of our task. We have also developed Bengali root word's corpus, synonym word's corpus, stop word's corpus and gathered 672 articles from the popular Bengali newspapers 'The Daily Prothom Alo' which is our inserted information. For testing this system, we have created 19335 questions from the introduced information and got 97.22% accurate answer.

This paper reviews some of the steps that paved the way for the development of sentiment analysis... more This paper reviews some of the steps that paved the way for the development of sentiment analysis (or opinion mining), a technique apparently used by Jim Simons’ Medallion fund for scoring an ‘impossible’ performance: a 66% annual average rate of return in the 31 years between 1988 and 2018. Sentiment analysis is a powerful tool that uses natural language processing (NLP), or computational linguistics, to determine whether a text about a company is positive, negative or neutral and, in a final analysis, to discover stock price patterns. Humans have always used symbols to communicate, plainly or secretively. Here we review some of the methods used in the past centuries, including Egyptians’ hieroglyphs, Julius Caesar’s cipher, Fibonacci’s abbreviations, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mirror Writing, Mary Stuart’s code. The intention is to describe some passages of the long journey made by human beings to arrive at the current sophisticated IT tools for sentiment analysis.

STRESS TEST FOR BERT AND DEEP MODELS: PREDICTING WORDS FROM ITALIAN POETRY

In this paper we present a set of experiments carried out with BERT on a number of Italian senten... more In this paper we present a set of experiments carried out with BERT on a number of Italian sentences taken from poetry domain. The experiments are organized on the hypothesis of a very high level of difficulty in predictability at the three levels of linguistic complexity that we intend to monitor: lexical, syntactic and semantic level. To test this hypothesis we ran the Italian version of BERT with 80 sentences - for a total of 900 tokens – mostly extracted from Italian poetry of the first half of last century. Then we alternated canonical and non-canonical versions of the same sentence before processing them with the same DL model. We used then sentences from the newswire domain containing similar syntactic structures. The results show that the DL model is highly sensitive to presence of non-canonical structures. However, DLs are also very sensitive to word frequency and to local non-literal meaning compositional effect. This is also apparent by the preference for predicting function vs content words, collocates vs infrequent word phrases. In the paper, we focused our attention on the use of subword units done by BERT for out of vocabulary words

STREAMING PUNCTUATION: A NOVEL PUNCTUATION TECHNIQUE LEVERAGING BIDIRECTIONAL CONTEXT FOR CONTINUOUS SPEECH RECOGNITION

While speech recognition Word Error Rate (WER) has reached human parity for English, continuous s... more While speech recognition Word Error Rate (WER) has reached human parity for English, continuous speech recognition scenarios such as voice typing and meeting transcriptions still suffer from segmentation and punctuation problems, resulting from irregular pausing patterns or slow speakers. Transformer sequence tagging models are effective at capturing long bi-directional context, which is crucial for automatic punctuation. Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) production systems, however, are constrained by real-time requirements, making it hard to incorporate the right context when making punctuation decisions. Context within the segments produced by ASR decoders can be helpful but limiting in overall punctuation performance for a continuous speech session. In this paper, we propose a streaming approach for punctuation or re-punctuation of ASR output using dynamic decoding windows and measure its impact on punctuation and segmentation accuracy across scenarios. The new system tackles over-segmentation issues, improving segmentation F0.5-score by 13.9%. Streaming punctuation achieves an average BLEUscore improvement of 0.66 for the downstream task of Machine Translation (MT).

Conceptual Graph (CG) formalism as proposed by Sowa (Sowa 1984) is used in this work for representing the concepts and their relationships. Automatic identification of concepts and conceptual relations from text documents is a challenging task. In this work the focus is on the analysis of the patent documents, mainly on the claim's section (Claim) of the documents. There are several complexities in the writing style of these documents as they are technical as well as legal. It is observed that the general in-depth parsers available in the open domain fail to parse the 'claims section' sentences in patent documents. The failure of in-depth parsers has motivated us, to develop methodology to extract CGs using other resources. Thus in the present work shallow parsing, NER and machine learning technique for extracting concepts and conceptual relationships from sentences in the claim section of patent documents is used. Thus, this paper discusses i) Generation of CG, a semantic network and ii) Generation of abstractive summary of the claims section of the patent. The aim is to generate a summary which is 30% of the whole claim section. Here we use Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs), a deep learning technique for automatically extracting CGs. We have tested our methodology using a corpus of 5000 patent documents from electronics domain. The results obtained are encouraging and is comparable with the state of the art systems.

Although it has been investigated for many languages around the world, very little has been done for Setswana language. Setswana language is written disjunctively and some words play multiple functions in a sentence. These features make part of speech tagging more challenging. This paper presents a finite state method for identifying one of the compound parts of speech, the relative. Results show an 82% identification rate which is lower than for other languages. The results also show that the model can identify the start of a relative 97% of the time but fail to identify where it stops 13% of the time. The model fails due to the limitations of the morphological analyser and due to more complex sentences not accounted for in the model.

This paper is studying the problems facing languages (English, Kurdish, and Arabic) due to the la... more This paper is studying the problems facing languages (English, Kurdish, and Arabic) due to the lack of symmetry between the negation morphemes in these languages, which differ in their numbers, the specifics of their uses, and the multiplicity of their meanings, at the two levels: general language and science terms. The negation morphemes in the Arabic and Kurdish languages are located at the beginning of the word as prefixes. That is, neither of them has infixes or suffixes that indicate the negative (morphologically), that is, at the level of the word or the lexical unit, and are grammatically at the level of the sentence. These negation morphemes may enter the middle of the sentence in Kurdish, but in Arabic, the negation morphemes are located at the forefront of the sentence. Most of the negation affixes in English are also prefixes, and a few are the suffixes denoting negation, the most prominent of which is (-less); English is also devoid of negation infixes. The lack of equivalence between the negation morphemes between quantitative and qualitative languages leads to chaos and disorder when transferred between languages. This necessitates the need to establish rules regulating the work of these multiple morphemes for the function of negation, at morphological structure, syntactic, semantic features, and the nature of their uses, at the level of the language itself, and at the level of contrastive between the sending and receiving languages.

We observe a stream of text messages, generated by Twitter or by a text file and present a tool w... more We observe a stream of text messages, generated by Twitter or by a text file and present a tool which constructs a dynamic list of topics. Each tweet generates edges of a graph where the nodes are the tags and edges link the author of the tweet with the tags present in the tweet. We consider the large clusters of the graph and approximate the stream of edges with a Reservoir sampling. We study the giant components of the Reservoir and each large component represents a topic. The nodes of high degree and their edges provide the first layer of a topic, and the iteration over the nodes provide a hierarchical decomposition. For a standard text, we use a Weighted Reservoir sampling where the weight is the similarity between words given by Word2vec. We consider dynamic overlapping windows and provide the topicalization on each window. We compare this approach with the Word2content and LDA techniques in the case of a standard text, viewed as a stream.

The tagger is developed using Arabic language grammatical rules and regulations. The tagger requires no pre-tagged text and is developed using a primitive set of lexicon items along with extensive grammatical and structural rules. It is tested and compared to Stanford tagger both in terms of accuracy and performance (speed). Obtained results are quite comparable to Stanford tagger performance with marginal difference favoring the developed tagger in accuracy with huge difference in terms of speed of execution. The newly developed tagger named MTE Tagger has been tested and evaluated. For the evaluation of its accuracy of tagging, a set of Arabic text was manually prepared and annotated. Compared to Stanford tagger, the MTE tagger performance was quite comparable. The developed tagger makes use of no pre-annotated datasets, except of some simple lexicon consisting of list of words representing closed word types like demonstrative nouns or pronouns or some particles. For the purpose of evaluation of the new tagger, it was run on multiple datasets and results were compared to those of Stanford tagger. In particular, both taggers (the MTE and the Stanford) were run on a set of 1226 sentences with close to 20,000 tokens that was human annotated and verified to serve as testbed. The results were very encouraging where in both test runs, the MTE tagger outperformed the Stanford tagger in terms of accuracy of 87.88% versus 86.67% for the Stanford tagger. In terms of speed of tagging and in comparison Stanford tagger, MTE Taggers' performance was on average 1:50. More improved accuracy is possible in future work as the set of rules are further optimized, integrated and more of Arabic language properties such as end of word discretization are used.

These few shot language models can help gain insight into a variety of interesting problems such as learning the rules of a game, detecting player behavior patterns, player attribution, and ultimately learning the game in an unsupervised manner. In this study, we firstly applied the BERT model to the simple combinatorial Nim game to analyze BERT's performance in the varying presence of noise. We analyzed the model's performance versus three agents, namely Nim Guru, a Random player, and a Q-learner. Secondly, we applied the BERT model to the game of chess through a large set of high ELO stockfish games with exhaustive encyclopedia openings. Finally, we have shown that model practically learns the rules of the Nim and chess, and have shown that it can competently play against its opponent and in some interesting conditions win.

It is the process of extracting relationships from a text. Extracted relationships actually occur between two or more entities of a certain type and these relations may have different patterns. The goal of the paper is to find out the noisy patterns for relation extraction of Bangla sentences. For the research work, seed tuples were needed containing two entities and the relation between them. We can get seed tuples from Freebase. Freebase is a large collaborative knowledge base and database of general, structured information for public use. But for Bangla language, there is no available Freebase. So we made Bangla Freebase which was the real challenge and it can be used for any other NLP based works. Then we tried to find out the noisy patterns for relation extraction by measuring conflict score.

ADVERSARIAL GRAMMATICAL ERROR GENERATION: APPLICATION TO PERSIAN LANGUAGE

Grammatical error correction (GEC) greatly benefits from large quantities of high-quality trainin... more Grammatical error correction (GEC) greatly benefits from large quantities of high-quality training data. However, the preparation of a large amount of labelled training data is time-consuming and prone to human errors. These issues have become major obstacles in training GEC systems. Recently, the performance of English GEC systems has drastically been enhanced by the application of deep neural networks that generate a large amount of synthetic data from limited samples. While GEC has extensively been studied in languages such as English and Chinese, no attempts have been made to generate synthetic data for improving Persian GEC systems. Given the substantial grammatical and semantic differences of the Persian language, in this paper, we propose a new deep learning framework to create large enough synthetic sentences that are grammatically incorrect for training Persian GEC systems. A modified version of sequence generative adversarial net with policy gradient is developed, in which the size of the model is scaled down and the hyperparameters are tuned. The generator is trained in an adversarial framework on a limited dataset of 8000 samples. Our proposed adversarial framework achieved bilingual evaluation understudy (BLEU) scores of 64.5% on BLEU-2, 44.2% on BLEU-3, and 21.4% on BLEU-4, and outperformed the conventional supervised-trained long short-term memory using maximum likelihood estimation and recently proposed sequence labeler using neural machine translation augmentation. This shows promise toward improving the performance of GEC systems by generating a large amount of training data.

Topic detection in dialogue datasets has become a significant challenge for unsupervised and unla... more Topic detection in dialogue datasets has become a significant challenge for unsupervised and unlabeled data to develop a cohesive and engaging dialogue system. In this paper, we proposed unsupervised and semi-supervised techniques for topic detection in the conversational dialogue dataset and compared them with existing topic detection techniques. The paper proposes a novel approach for topic detection, which takes preprocessed data as an input and performs similarity analysis with the TF-IDF scores bag of words technique (BOW) to identify higher frequency words from dialogue utterances. It then refines the higher frequency words by integrating the clustering and elbow methods and using the Parallel Latent Dirichlet Allocation (PLDA) model to detect the topics. The paper comprised a comparative analysis of the proposed approach on the Switchboard, Personachat and Mul-tiWOZ dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed topic detection approach performs significantly better using a semi-supervised dialogue dataset. We also performed topic quantification to check how accurate extracted topics are to compare with manually annotated data. For example, extracted topics from Switchboard are 92.72%, Peronachat 87.31% and MultiWOZ 93.15% accurate with manually annotated data.

There are several issues with the existing general machine translation or natural language genera... more There are several issues with the existing general machine translation or natural language generation evaluation metrics, and question-answering (QA) systems are indifferent in that context. To build robust QA systems, we need the ability to have equivalently robust evaluation systems to verify whether model predictions to questions are similar to ground-truth annotations. The ability to compare similarity based on semantics as opposed to pure string overlap is important to compare models fairly and to indicate more realistic acceptance criteria in real-life applications. We build upon the first to our knowledge paper that uses transformer-based model metrics to assess semantic answer similarity and achieve higher correlations to human judgement in the case of no lexical overlap. We propose cross-encoder augmented bi-encoder and BERTScore models for semantic answer similarity, trained on a new dataset consisting of name pairs of US-American public figures. As far as we are concerned, we provide the first dataset of co-referent name string pairs along with their similarities, which can be used for training.

The Dinka text editors have been developed, however, no one has developed their spellcheckers. The research entitled Prototyping NLP Non-Word Detection System for Dinka Using Dictionary Lookup Approach was a solution to Dinka spellchecking. The study objectives were: requirements gathering and analysis. The computer keyboard was customized to accept the Dinka characters. Dinka lexicon was created with 6,976 words. The prototype was implemented using java programming language and dictionary lookup approach was used for non-word detection. The accuracy of detection (detecting real words and non-words) gave 98.10%, and the accuracy of non-word detection (detection of non-words only) was 91.36%. The True Positive Rate (TPR) was 99.10% and the True Negative Rate (TNR) was 91.36 %. The speed of non-word detection which was found as1, 044 Hz was slow.

The idea is to embed RegEx patterns as part of search engine's algorithm in a web application project to provide strings related to the targeted items for more comprehensive coverage of search results. The user's search query is a string of characters guided by search boundaries selected from the entry point. The results returned from the search operation are different results within a category determined by the search boundaries. This is designed to be beneficial to a user who has an obscure idea about the information he/she wanted to search but knows the boundries within which to get the information. This technique can be applied to data processing tasks such as information extraction and search refinements
