Sam Harris, in his book The Moral Landscape, argues that “science can determine human values.” Against this view, I argue that while secular moral philosophy can certainly help us to determine our values, science—at least as that word is commonly understood—must play a subservient role. To the extent that science can “determine” what we ought to do, it is only by providing us with empirical information, which can then be slotted into a chain of deductive (moral) reasoning. The premises of such reasoning, however, can in no way be derived from the scientific method: they come, instead, from philosophy—and common sense.

Neuromarketing is an emerging field that bridges the study of consumer behavior with neuroscience. Controversial when it first emerged in 2002, the field is gaining rapid credibility and adoption among advertising and marketing professionals. Each year, over 400 billion dollars is invested in advertising campaigns. Yet, conventional methods for testing and predicting the effectiveness of those investments have generally failed because they depend on consumers’ willingness and competency to describe how they feel when they are exposed to an advertisement. Neuromarketing offers cutting edge methods for directly probing minds without requiring demanding cognitive or conscious participation. This paper discusses the promise of the burgeoning field of neuromarketing and suggests it has the potential to significantly improve the effectiveness of both commercial and cause-related advertising messages around the world.

Recent research suggests that romantic love may be literally addictive. Although the exact nature of the relationship between love and addiction has been described in inconsistent terms throughout the literature, we offer a framework that distinguishes between a narrow view and a broad view of love addiction. The narrow view counts only the most extreme, harmful forms of love or love-related behaviors as being potentially addictive in nature. The broad view, by contrast, counts even basic social attachment as being on a spectrum of addictive motivations, underwritten by similar neurochemical processes as more conventional addictions. We argue that on either understanding of love-as-addiction, treatment decisions should hinge on considerations of harm and well-being rather than on definitions of disease. Implications for the ethical use of anti-love biotechnology are considered.

Se aborda el fenómeno del individualismo contemporáneo, las transformaciones de la intimidad y la fragilidad de los vínculos humanos. Se muestra cómo las sociedades telemáticas dan lugar a nuevas formas de fuga y ausencia del mundo, a un malestar cultural, donde hombres escindidos entre la agresión y el temor, experimentan derivas identitarias y zozobras existenciales ante la exacerbación del consumo, la alienación del trabajo y el terror difuso de las ciudades del pánico.

Yoga is a way of life comprising mental, physical and spiritual attributes to achieve holism, meaningfulness, excellence and completeness in all walks of human functioning. It entails energizing and fuelling processes which lead an individual to make a balance in his/her personality and incite him/her to achieve greatest social, psychological, spiritual and moral coordination juxtaposed with most creative and productive functioning at individual, family, community, societal, national, international and cosmic levels. The present paper attempts to explicate and assess the role of yoga and yogic practices in achieving, preserving and promoting mental health. The curative, preventive and promotive role of yoga and yogic practices in mental health and human functioning have been discussed and substantiated. The major psychotherapeutic practices and techniques based on yoga and yogic practices have been discussed in length. In addition, the mechanisms through which the yoga and yogic practices exert their influences on mental health and human functioning have also been given sufficient place based on scientific findings of psychological science. La psicología analítica es la obra de Carl Gustav Jung y sus seguidores. También conocida como psicología de los complejos, el término aparece oficialmente en 1913 para designar una ampliación del psicoanálisis, razón por la cual se la tiene tanto por una escuela de psicoanálisis como por una tendencia de la psicología profunda, según la expresión de Bleuler para caracterizar a toda psicología que parta de la hipótesis de la existencia de una psique inconsciente.
Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) era un joven psiquiatra ya reconocido por la profesión cuando asumió la defensa de la obra de Freud, tanto en los foros psiquiátricos como en su propia obra, iniciada en 1902. Su estrecha colaboración desde 1907 se rompería en 1913 a instancias de Freud, para quien los desarrollos Junguianos del psicoanálisis no resultaban acordes con su propia teoría. Atrás quedarán los años en los que Jung fue el presidente de la Asociación Psicoanalítica Internacional desde su fundación en 1910 hasta el inicio de la primera Guerra Mundial. Una época en la que se constituye y alcanza una dimensión internacional (Europa y Estados Unidos) el movimiento psicoanalítico nacido en Viena alrededor de Freud a partir de 1900.
Entre el inmenso legado de Carl Jung, aquel que ha pasado a la historia por sus teorías y métodos revolucionarios en el mundo de la psicología, hay un tema que sobresale y ha sido su herencia más duradera: La Teoría de los Arquetipos.
Jung busca e investiga a los arquetipos en las doctrinas de las tribus primitivas, en las doctrinas secretas esotéricas, en las religiones, en los mitos y leyendas, en los símbolos del Tarot, en las imágenes de la Alquimia y muy especialmente en los sueños, en los que se apoya para la psicoterapia.
Hay que empezar por decir que Jung pensaba que no venimos al mundo como una tabula rasa, no venimos ‘en blanco’ como planteaba Freud, el ser humano según Jung, ya nace con información y ciertas creencias: “no existe una sola idea o concepción esencial que no posea antecedentes históricos”. Estos antecedentes históricos llegan a nosotros inconscientemente, y otros los vamos aprendiendo por medio de mitos, leyendas y la experiencia.
Es fácil identificar diferentes tipos de patrones de conducta en los mitos y leyendas de las culturas antiguas, todas tienden a tener un mismo héroe y trama, tienden, básicamente, a repetirse. Esta continua repetición de historias con los mismos personajes y el mismo guión es lo que llamamos Arquetipos.

Se pueden identificar palabras cargadas de emoción
en un grupo de clase, debido a la construcción

previa que le ha dotado de una significación entrelazada

“chido”, “chévere”, “está guay”, etc. que tendrán
aceptación dentro de ese grupo particular de clase
que las utiliza, y evocarán en ellos una respuesta
emocional a través de la circunstancia
en que se use la palabra.

Este libro examina la larga trayectoria de investigaciones sobre el cerebro y la mente humanos que, tras la revolución científica de los siglos XVI y XVII, propiciaron hallazgos fundamentales sobre la estructura y el funcionamiento del sistema nervioso, hoy abordados desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar que integra las aportaciones de ramas como la neurobiología y la psicología cognitiva. La obra se divide en tres partes: la primera versa sobre el itinerario histórico de la neurobiología; la segunda discute el estudio de la percepción desde un ángulo histórico y sistemático; la tercera se aproxima a tres grandes campos de la investigación actual: las emociones, el lenguaje y la conciencia. Se trata de un trabajo sistemático muy documentado y con referencias a fuentes primarias que ha pretendido reunir las contribuciones más relevantes para la comprensión del cerebro humano realizadas durante cada período histórico.

El término neurociencia es joven. La Society for Neuroscience, asociación de
neurocientíficos profesionales, fue fundada hace relativamente poco, concretamente
en 1970. No obstante, el estudio del cerebro es tan antiguo como la propia
ciencia. Históricamente, los científicos dedicados a comprender el sistema
nervioso procedían de disciplinas científicas diferentes, como la Medicina, la
Biología o la Psicología. La revolución de la neurociencia se inició cuando estos
científicos se dieron cuenta de que la mejor esperanza para discernir el funcionamiento
del cerebro necesitaba de un posicionamiento multidisciplinar, requiriendo
conocimientos sobre infinidad de hechos, desde la estructura de una
molécula de acetilcolina hasta la razón por la que el perro de Pavlov segregaba
saliva cuando sonaba la campana. Por lo tanto, la unidad de estudio de la neurociencia,
como disciplina, requiere de diferentes niveles de análisis, siendo en
un orden de complejidad ascendente: molecular, celular, sistémico, conductual
y cognitivo. Esta obra intenta englobar todos los niveles de análisis, pero siempre
poniendo el énfasis en el estudio del papel del sistema nervioso, en interacción
con el resto del cuerpo, sobre el control del comportamiento. Igualmente,
partiendo del hecho que aglutina diversos sistemas de procesamiento sensorial
y de control motor, sistemas reguladores, emocionales y de procesamiento cognitivo,
su lectura puede proporcionar unos conocimientos biológicos que le
ayudarán en la comprensión de diferentes procesos psicológicos básicos (como
la sensación y percepción, la emoción, la memoria o el lenguaje), así como las
herramientas para profundizar en los mecanismos patológicos relacionados con
el sistema nervioso.
De este modo, los objetivos que se pretende abordar en este libro son los siguientes:
1. Comprender cómo nuestro organismo capta la información sensorial y
cómo las células receptoras la transforman en señales neurales para ser procesadas
por el cerebro.
2. Conocer las características generales y centrales del control motor y saber
cómo los órganos efectores transforman las órdenes motoras en movimiento.
3. Saber cuáles son los principales sistemas reguladores y motivacionales del
cuerpo y sus características funcionales.

In recent years, interest in the subject of creativity has grown remarkably in various fields, among which is the field of education, both nationally and, above all, internationally. Much of this interest is undoubtedly due to the strong link that creativity has with areas that are currently impacting society as a whole, especially with science and technology. However, its influence is not limited to these spaces and increasingly appears associated with the daily activities of individuals, their ways of living, facing problems, establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships, reaching higher levels of personal development and emotional well-being in increasingly complex and competitive social environments.
This growing recognition justifies its insertion in the educational field. However, despite being perhaps one of the most valuable resources that we have, it is also true that the predominant teaching model tends to reduce the creativity of the student below its real possibilities. Unfortunately, a set of forces persists at school that inhibit creativity in the teaching-learning process. Frequently in the classroom there is an exaggerated emphasis on the reproduction of knowledge and the memorization of content. For this reason, it was considered convenient to include a module on Development of Creativity, within which this specific course is included.
This dossier is made up of four sections or units: The first refers to the theoretical aspects; Unit II to the relationships of creativity with education; Unit III is oriented to creativity development techniques, and the fourth and last to discuss the most outstanding Ibero-American experiences on creativity development programs. For this we have selected articles by great specialists in creativity who present their contributions to us with the hope that this collaborative effort that transcends geographical borders can enrich the teaching practice of our teachers and motivate the exchange of experiences and the circulation of ideas among groups of researchers and specialists interested in creative processes within education.

The highly psychoactive molecule N,N -dimethyltryptamine (or simply DMT), is found naturally occurring in the brains of humans, mammals, and some other animals, as well as in a broad range of species of the plant kingdom. Although speculative, neurochemical research suggests that DMT may be made in the pineal gland, and it is hypothesised that, as much as melatonin helps activate sleep cycles, DMT activates dreaming, and may also be implicated in other natural visionary states such as mystical experience, near-death experience (NDE), spontaneous psi and psychosis. Amazonian shamans have made use of this chemical for its visionary properties for thousands of years, most likely, and take it as part of a decoction frequently called ayahuasca, which translates from Quechua as “vine of the spirits” or “vine of the dead”. The psychedelic brew is taken because it gives rise to extraordinary mental phenomena that have shamanic and supposed healing qualities, such as synaesthesia, ostensible extra-dimensional percepts, out-of-body experiences, psi experiences and perhaps most commonly, encounters with discarnate entities. When described by independent and seemingly naïve DMT participants the entities encountered tend to vary in detail but often belong to one of a very few similar types, with similar behavioural characteristics. For instance, mischievous shapeshifting elves, preying mantis alien brain surgeons and jewel-encrusted reptilian beings, who all seem to appear with baffling predictability. This opens up a wealth of questions as to the reality (i.e., the ontology) of these entities. The discussion of the phenomenology and ontology of these entities mixes research from parapsychology, ethnobotany and psychopharmacology – the fruits of science – with the foamy custard of folklore, anthropology, mythology, cultural studies and related disciplines. Hopefully however, given the varied readership of this journal, it won’t prove to be a trifle too interdisciplinary.

Resumen:
El presente artículo se propone dar cuenta del elusivo fenómeno de la conciencia desde la original perspectiva de la neurofenomenología de Francisco Varela, quien a partir de nociones tales como neuroplasticidad, enacción y emergencia, explica, cómo ocurren los procesos cerebrales que fundan la conciencia y la “unidad” de la vivencia. Describiendo como la conciencia aparece en el vivir encarnado: en la regulación con el cuerpo entero; en sus relaciones sensorio-motoras con el mundo y en una red ínter-subjetiva de acciones y de lenguaje.

El artículo tiene por finalidad, reflexionar sobre los posibles aportes de la influencia de la plasticidad cerebral / neuroplasticidad en el proceso de aprendizaje, desde un análisis que utiliza la postura fenomenológica de Fernando Varela y Merleau-Ponty. El texto presenta algunas de las principales ideas elaboradas por estos grandes filósofos, y cómo éstas, ligadas intrínsecamente a las neurociencias, aportan interesantes tópicos al entendimiento del cerebro humano. Finalmente, discute las implicaciones epistemológicas para el desarrollo de la plasticidad cerebral en el campo educativo. La metodología empleada estuvo enmarcada en la revisión y análisis documental, y como resultado de la investigación, se tuvo que las implicaciones epistemológicas para el desarrollo de la neuroplasticidad en el campo educativo, todo aquello que proviene de una experiencia sensorial, podrá ser catalogado dentro del universo de fenómenos.

Why do humans create images and what are their features that make them special? How are image-making and the use of images related? What is the purpose of images? The " problem of images " is addressed through the lens of contemporary neuroscience, arguing why and how neuroscience can investigate our relationship with art and aesthetics, framing this empirical approach as " experimental aesthetics. " Recent discoveries are presented that changed our ideas about perception, action, and cognition and the relationship among them, allowing a new look—complementary to the humanistic approach—at the problem of images. A new model of perception and cognition is proposed, called embodied simulation, which reveals the constitutive relationship between brain-body and the reception of human creative expressions.

The (latest) crisis in confidence in social psychology has generated much heated discussion about the importance of replication, including how it should be carried out as well as interpreted by scholars in the field. For example, what does it mean if a replication attempt “fails”—does it mean that the original results, or the theory that predicted them, have been falsified? And how should “failed” replications affect our belief in the validity of the original research? In this paper, we consider the replication debate from a historical and philosophical perspective, and provide a conceptual analysis of both replication and falsification as they pertain to this important discussion. Along the way, we highlight the importance of auxiliary assumptions (for both testing theories and attempting replications), and introduce a Bayesian framework for assessing “failed” replications in terms of how they should affect our confidence in original findings.

The first part of the paper develops the argument that geographers should learn to decompose human memory into its constituent parts because then and then alone will we become attuned to the full range of ways in which we incorporate places into our beings. The second part of the paper articulates Stephen Hill's comments on episodic memory with my recent work on wisdom.

Se pueden copiar movimientos y acciones motoras sin entender su significado, como sucede cuando una bandada de gansos despega intempestivamente de un lago, siguiendo «ciegamente» al primero de sus miembros que se sintió atemorizado. Para los humanos, el SNC provee un mecanismo de copiado más sofisticado que nos ayuda a entender las intenciones de otras personas y en cierto sentido, a leer su mente. Los seres humanos analizamos continuamente las intenciones y emociones del otro, observando permanentemente sus movimientos, posturas y miradas, antes de decidirnos a interactuar con él. La habilidad para interpretar las intenciones del otro es esencial para lograr la cooperación y una interacción social exitosa.
En el presente capítulo se revisan los aspectos clínicos, ontogéneticos y neurobiológicos de la teoría de la mente, las alteraciones en la adquisición de estos procesos cognoscitivos y su relación con trastornos psicopatológicos como la esquizofrenia.
