"The presentation guides you to discover in a fresh way how TESOL is a partial and integral expre... more "The presentation guides you to discover in a fresh way how TESOL is a partial and integral expression of the Christian path to wholeness by virtue of the process of cultural, linguistic and identity paradigm shifts. What a meta-cognitive model integrating TESOL and Christianity does, is build from the empirical to the realm of the mind, heart and spirit - which is core transformation. It’s a journey to an unseen and ideal place, much like Norton’s “imagined communities”. This can be translated, of course, to Abraham’s journey to a heavenly city. We meet our students there, in no-man’s-land as it were, and this model gives teachers and students a handle on how to move forward.

The matter of pragmatics has been a hot topic in TESOL for at least the last two decades. The qu... more The matter of pragmatics has been a hot topic in TESOL for at least the last two decades. The question of whether or not pragmatic competence could be taught was first formally raised by Gabriele Kasper (1997). By providing communicative observation opportunities to ELLs, it is suggested that instructors can broaden learners’ noticing filters to affect not only meta-linguistic awareness, but also meta-pragmatic awareness. In the methodological approaches discussed, attention will be given to what it means to “know English” in terms of connecting logical patterns and relationships with meanings and functions of linguistic forms, and applying these in pragmatic contexts. Because socio-pragmatics is culturally situated, it can be considered too difficult to navigate for beginning language learners. However, through a process of professional transformation governed by a cognitive framework, the presenter has discovered an approach that works for beginners.

Learning a new language is not only about acquiring new phonological, lexical and syntactic syste... more Learning a new language is not only about acquiring new phonological, lexical and syntactic systems, but also about navigating culture, acquiring new paradigms, and questioning personal identity. Thus, even though the main goal of international EAL students is to acquire new language skills, they often find themselves dealing with deeper interior issues such as culture, worldview and identity. This workshop will present a simple model of cognition which explains what is happening when language instruction triggers these deeper issues. This model will be practically applied to various situations to develop pedagogical awareness of the cognitive modeling critical cross-cultural learning assumes. Reference to recent studies in pragmatics, intercultural and social interaction, and cognitive and linguistic development will inform the discussion and application.

This presentation and workshop will help you evaluate methods, procedures, materials and activiti... more This presentation and workshop will help you evaluate methods, procedures, materials and activities that present ESL students with an opportunity to engage the news media in ways that build their language skills, are task-based, cognitively holistic and respectfully require them to examine their own underlying assumptions and that of Canadians on important local and global issues. Various cognitive theories of learning will be presented and examined, along with the acknowledgment of the dialectic reasoning that has shaped classical Western thinking. It is our premise that by initiating students into a Canadian cultural context with content-based substance to think about, they will be motivated and empowered to become agents and participants in their own learning. This journey in course design and learning that we have dubbed “CCBL” (contextual content-based learning) has many opportunities to build language skills in every area, and to utilize all aspects of intelligence and cognitive functioning. There will be opportunity to participate in focused group activities to analyze materials created by the presenters for the purposes of aiding you in your own teaching, planning and curriculum development. In this forum there will also be ample time to discuss and share your own experience and ideas.

This paper examines the relationship between Christianity and TESOL from a cognitive perspective ... more This paper examines the relationship between Christianity and TESOL from a cognitive perspective and suggests that TESOL is actually a partial expression of Christian doctrine and personal transformation. We present the theory of mental symmetry, based in Romans 12 spiritual gifts and originally developed through historical research and observation of personality, provide neurological evidence for this theory, and then use the theory to provide a cognitive explanation for the Christian Trinitarian God and the Christian path of salvation, as well as show similar elements that exist within TESOL.
