Where the geographies of war coincide with the geographies of poverty it becomes inevitable to bring together war and development into the same axis. This axis merges direct and structural forms of violence. Direct violence as a result of armed conflict is visible and explicit; it kills, wounds, disables, displaces, and impoverishes people. On the other hand, structural violence, or ‘everyday violence’ that poor people face regularly, translates into terms such as infant mortality, infectious disease, shortened lifespan and illiteracy. In this paper, the concept of social exclusion plays a central role to reveal children’s experience of war and poverty.  In the following chapters, the case of Kurdish children in Turkey will provide the basis for the theoretical discussion of social exclusion.
