The HCP assess the need for PRN medication prior to administration to the residents. The purpose of this study was to describe HCP’s perceptions of factors affecting PRN medication management in sheltered housing for older adults. Method This was a qualitative study with five focus-group interviews with 22 HCP working in sheltered housing for older adults. The HCP were heterogenous regarding scholarly education and experiences, working in four different municipalities in mid-Norway, representing urban, sub-urban and rural districts. The analysis was inductive, based on qualitative, manifest, content analysis. The main outcome was HCP perceptions of the factors affecting PRN medication management in sheltered housing. Results Four main factors affecting the PRN medication management were identified in...

The study aim was to describe which knowledge sources nurses working in sheltered housing for older people use when making decisions regarding PRNM. This was a qualitative interview study with registered nurses ( n = 4) and assistant nurses ( n = 4) working in sheltered housings in mid and eastern Norway. Data analysis was based on qualitative and abductive content analysis, where evidence-based practice (EBP) was used in the abduction. The COREQ checklist was followed. Several knowledge sources are used when making decisions regarding PRNM, that represent the four elements of EBP. ‘Practitioner experience and judgement’ was a prominent source of knowledge among the nurses, while ‘Evaluated external evidence’ was less emphasized in PRNM decision-making. The results support previous research on EBP in nursing, and bring new knowledge regarding PRNM in the context of sheltered housing. To achieve appropriate and safe management of PRNM, there is a need to support nurses’ decision-making process, e.g. through PRNM guidelines and systems for documentation and information exchange. EBP in PRNM decision processes should be given attention, utilizing all elements including ‘Evaluated external evidence’ as a knowledge source.

The present study aimed to explore nurses' experiences of dispensing drugs to older people in nursing homes by using an exploratory qualitative design. Focus group interviews were conducted in three nursing homes in central Norway; the data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results indicated that drug dispensing was perceived as a complicated process during which both anticipated and unforeseen challenges arose that influenced the nurses' abilities to follow professional standards. In these situations, the nurses had to apply their knowledge and make various adjustments based on conditions in the organization and the needs of individual patients. The findings have implications for facilitating nurses' working conditions and resources to avoid drug administration that limit the discretion of nurses and threaten patient safety in nursing homes.

The aim of this study was to understand the perceptions of healthcare professionals and healthcare students regarding existing barriers to patient safety through the performance of documentation practices. Methods: Using a qualitative, exploratory design, this study conducted six focus group interviews with nurses and social educators (n = 12) involved in primary care practice and nursing and social educator bachelor’s degree students from a University College (n = 11). Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Four themes emerged from the analysis, which described barriers to patient safety and quality in documentation practices: “Individual factors,” “Social factors,” “Organizational factors,...

The aim of this study was to expand our understanding of the experiences of older people living in sheltered housings with regard to shared decision-making concerning pro re nata medications. In this study, we conducted in-depth interviews with residents living in Norwegian sheltered housings. The analysis was inductive, based on a narrative positioning analysis. Twelve residents were interviewed, and three narratives representing participants’ variation are presented. People take different positions in shared decision-making of pro re nata medication, and they position themselves variously at different levels and situations. Prevailing master narratives affect the residents’ positions in shared decision-making. Contrasts in older adults’ experiences indicate that shared decision-making is not straightforward and is highly reliant on the context. Seemingly, they wish to be inv...

Objective: The objectives of the study were to: 1) examine the content of nurses' discharge notes of older patients' discharged from hospital to home care, and 2) investigate the association between the content of discharge notes and characteristics of patient and transfer. Methods: The nursing discharge notes of 70 older patients admitted to a geriatric unit and a general medicine ward at a local hospital in central Norway were analysed. The discharge notes were structured in accordance with the Well-being, Integrity, Prevention, and Safety (VIPS) model. Mean, standard deviations, and independent sample t-tests were performed to show and examine differences in use of VIPS keywords in relation...

This makes documentation from the electronic patient record crucial for carrying out proper care. The aim of this study was to elaborate on knowledge of home health nursing professionals’ attitudes towards electronic nursing documentation, and to investigate whether attitudes towards documentation and its performance differ with professionals’ education level and working experiences. Methods: A sample of 161 home health nursing employees in Mid-Norway answered a questionnaire including statements about experiences of nursing documentation and its use. Data was analysed by descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis in SPSS. Results: Of the sample, 77 respondents had higher education (HE), and 84 had lower education (LE). In total, 46 had less than 4 years’ experience at the workplace, and 115 had 4 years or more. The results showed an overall positive attitude towards documentation among the e...
