The owner of equipment hires an agent to perform maintenance actions with a predetermined availability target to be met. The traditional payment scheme such as a fixed price, a cost reimbursement is effective only to ensure the achievement of the availability target. However, there are circumstances where pushing the agent to exceed the target will be rewarding, especially in high operational revenue such as in mining industry. To get this reward, a new payment scheme is needed. This research aims to study maintenance contract payment schemes that would motivate an agent to achieve a higher performance which is beyond the target. A principal agent theory is used as it allows to model the owner's and the agent's decision making process simultaneously.

Mining industry is characterized by a high operational revenue, and hence high availability of he... more Mining industry is characterized by a high operational revenue, and hence high availability of heavy equipment used in mining industry is a critical factor to ensure the revenue target. To maintain high avaliability of the heavy equipment, the equipment’s owner hires an agent to perform maintenance action. Contract is then used to control the relationship between the two parties involved. The traditional contracts such as fixed price, cost plus or penalty based contract studied is unable to push agent’s performance to exceed target, and this in turn would lead to a sub-optimal result (revenue). This research deals with designing maintenance contract compensation schemes. The scheme should induce agent to select the highest possible maintenance effort level, thereby pushing agent’s performance and achieve maximum utility for both parties involved. This paper deals with a Maintenance Service Contract (MSC) involving three parties — Manufacturer... more This paper deals with a Maintenance Service Contract (MSC) involving three parties — Manufacturer, Service Agent and Customer. We formulate decision problems of the three parties using Stackelberg game theory formulation and integrate the three interdependent decision models using a bi-level optimization formulation. As the objective functions and their constraints are all in non-linier form, then we need to use Karush-kuhn Tucker condition to convert the optimization problem into a single level optimization. A genetic algorithm is used to obtain the optimal solution (i.e. the best option and its optimal price) for each party.

One type of warranty that applies is a product warranty under Lemon Law. This guarantee under Lemon Law applies a lot to automotive products such as cars. Lemon Law is a law that protects consumers from poor quality new goods that are not in accordance with related product standards but can reach consumers. With this Lemon Law, consumers can return products that are proven to have a lemon condition in the hands of producers to then get a refund (replacement ) or replacement with a new similar product ( replacement ). The product can be claimed in a lemon condition if: (1) the car has been returned to the dealer four times because it needs to be repaired on the same problem / faulty part, but the dealer is unable to fix it satisfactorily; or (2) the car has been out of service for more than 30 days due to one or more damage. This paper develops a mathematical model of optimal preventive maintenance for a two-dimensional ... more This paper develops a mathematical model of optimal preventive maintenance for a two-dimensional lease contract of a fleet of dump trucks. The lease contract coverage is characterized by two parameters - age and usage. We use one dimensional approach to model the age and usage of a repairable equipment. The lessor will provide preventive maintenance and corrective (CM) actions during the contract period, and a penalty cost incurred when the time required to perform an imperfect repair (CM) exceeds a target. This strategy will reduce equipment failures and hence it decreases the penalty cost and maintenance cost during the lease contract. We find the optimal maintenance degree and time between preventive maintenance, which minimizes the expected total cost.

The product is sold with a two-dimensional non-renewing failure replacement warranty. We model product failures using the one-dimensional approach which allows to modeling the effect of age and usage to the product’s degradation. Under the periodic replacement policy, for a given usage rate y, the product is repaired with minimal repair when it fails at the first n-1 failures and it is replaced with a new one at nth failure. We obtain the global optimal values of n which minimizes the expected cost per unit time to the buyer and give a numerical example to illustrate the optimal solution. ABSTRACT In this paper, we investigate a maintenance service contract for a warranted product car... more ABSTRACT In this paper, we investigate a maintenance service contract for a warranted product carried out by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The model was developed under the assumption that there are one consumer and one service provider who is the OEM. This is typically applied to the situation where the OEM is the only service provider such as in the mining industry. From the OEM point of view, two contract options were considered, they are: the OEM carried out all repairs and preventive maintenance activities; the OEM carries out failure and the customer undertakes in house preventive maintenance actions. The model uses a non-cooperative game formulation by maximizing expected profits. We use a linear function of failure intensity to consider a product with increasing failure intensity. We obtain the pricing structure in the contract. And for the customer, they can choose the optimal option under the term of contract.

The number of failures from the product can be reduced by optimal maintenance policy. This research investigates a periodic maintenance policy for a product sold with a two-dimensional warranty. Actually, this idea is a development of that in Murthy and Wilson (1991). The product failures is modeled using a one-dimensional approach in which usage is a function of age. Furthermore, it is assumed that the relation between these variables is linear. The slope of the line is the usage rate. The optimal periodic maintenance time can be derived by minimizing the expected cost per unit time. We also proved that the expected cost per unit time is a concave function, and gave the global optimal solution. As a numerical example, we choose Weibull distribution with different levels of usage rates. The numerical results show that the increase of usage rate will decrease the length of periodic maintenance time.

A mining company needs high availability of dump trucks used to haul mining materials. As a resul... more A mining company needs high availability of dump trucks used to haul mining materials. As a result, an effective maintenance action is required to keep the dump trucks in a good condition and hence reducing failure and downtime of the dump trucks. To carry out maintenance in-house requires a high intensive maintenance facility and high skilled maintenance specialists. Often, outsourcing maintenance is an economic option for the company. An external agent takes a proactive action with offering some maintenance contract options to the owner. The decision problem for the owner is to decide the best option and for the agent is to determine the optimal price for each option offered. A non-cooperative game-theory is used to formulate the decision problems for the owner and the agent. We consider that failure pattern of each truck follows a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) and a queueing theory with multiple servers is used to estimate the downtime. As it involves high complexity to model downtime using a queueing theory, then in this paper we use a simulation method. Furthermore, we conduct experiment to seek for the best number of maintenance facilities (servers) which minimises maintenance and penalty costs incurred to the agent.

Abstract Consider a lessor (service provider) offering a multi-period lease contract (LC) for rem... more Abstract Consider a lessor (service provider) offering a multi-period lease contract (LC) for remanufactured products. The LC proposed has two attributes –i.e. m periods, m ⩾ 1 and a usage threshold (a limitation of usage allowed). If the total usage of the product is below the usage threshold during the LC periods, then no extra charge is required. Otherwise the lessee needs to pay some extra charge. The lessor is responsible to carry out maintenance actions during the LC periods, and promises a high availability (or a low downtime). If the downtime is above the target then there will be a penalty cost to the lessor. The LC price for the remanufactured product is much cheaper, and hence it becomes attractive and needs to be considered when the lessee is looking for a better option of a LC. For the multi-period LC studied, the lessor will decide the maintenance policy and the price for the LC offered, whilst the lessee will find the rate of its usage and the LC periods suitable to its business. The numerical examples are presented to illustrate the optimal decision variables for each party.

Offering a product with a longer warranty period increases the warranty cost to the manufacturer. For a repairable product, an appropriate servicing strategy can reduce the warranty cost significantly. Many servicing strategies involving replacement or imperfect repair have been studied in the literature. In this paper, we study a servicing strategy which considers preventive maintenance and imperfect repair to reduce the warranty cost.
