A survey focusing on human-wildlife conflict mainly involving feral animals was conducted during ... more A survey focusing on human-wildlife conflict mainly involving feral animals was conducted during the Pulau Sibu Scientific Expedition from 21st until 25th July 2017. From five days of damage assessment covering 7.3 km track around the island, the result was alarming as more than 90% the area of Pulau Sibu were affected at various level of damage (1-5). Camera traps were used at suspected active wallow of Sus scrofa as an additional method besides the footprints of the feral animals that were photographed and plaster-casted for future reference and proof. Other than that, there was also a report by the locals stating that the S. scrofa have started to damage their crops and livestock. The findings of the assessment are very crucial to the authorities in taking appropriate mitigation measure as the damage caused by these animals has become more severe over time.

Abstract
Hybrid models such as the Artificial Neural Network-Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ANN–ARIMA) model are widely used in forecasting. However, inaccuracies and inefficiency remain in evidence. To yield the ANN–ARIMA with a higher degree of accuracy, efficiency and precision, the bootstrap and the double bootstrap methods are commonly used as alternative methods through the reconstruction of an ANN–ARIMA standard error. Unfortunately, these methods have not been applied in time series-based forecasting models. The aims of this study are twofold. First, is to propose the hybridization of bootstrap model and that of double bootstrap mode called Bootstrap Artificial Neural Network-Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (B-ANN–ARIMA) and Double Bootstrap Artificial Neural Network-Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (DB-ANN–ARIMA), respectively. Second, is to investigate the performance of these proposed models by comparing them with ARIMA, ANN and ANN–ARIMA. Our investigation is based on three well-known real datasets, i.e., Wolf's sunspot data, Canadian lynx data and, Malaysia ringgit/United States dollar exchange rate data. Statistical analysis on SSE, MSE, RMSE, MAE, MAPE and VAF is then conducted to verify that the proposed models are better than previous ARIMA, ANN and ANN–ARIMA models. The empirical results show that, compared with ARIMA, ANNs and ANN–ARIMA models, the proposed models generate smaller values of SSE, MSE, RMSE, MAE, MAPE and VAF for both training and testing datasets. In other words, the proposed models are better than those that we compare with. Their forecasting values are closer to the actual values. Thus, we conclude that the proposed models can be used to generate better forecasting values with higher degree of accuracy, efficiency and, precision in forecasting time series results becomes a priority. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Background
Nasalis larvatus are well‐known attraction for tourists in the mangrove forest of Bako National Park (BNP). Little is known regarding the infestation of helminth parasites in proboscis monkeys. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to determine the prevalence species of major helminth parasites of public health importance in proboscis monkeys in BNP.
Methods
A total of 65 faecal samples screened for helminth parasites via sodium nitrate floatation and faecal sedimentation techniques.
Results
A total of 14 helminth parasite species comprising of eight genera of nematodes, two species of cestodes and two trematodes were identified. Eggs of Trichuris trichiura were the most frequently encountered in proboscis monkeys.
Conclusion
This is the first survey on the fauna of helminth parasites of proboscis monkeys living in mangrove forests, and therefore, it implies the important baseline information

This article provides violent crime data in Malaysia from 2006 to2017. The violent crimes include murder, rape, gang robbery,robbery and voluntarily causing hurt cases. A total of 330,395 violent crime cases were reported in this 12 year period and the data were tabulated state by state for all thirteen states of Malaysia,including two states in Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) and one federal territory (Kuala Lumpur). In general, violent crimes show a decreasing trend from 2006 to 2017 in Malaysia. However, armed gang robbery and armed robbery show a fluctuating pattern from 2008 to 2011.

Orang Asli is the aboriginal people in Peninsular Malaysia who have been recognized as indigenous... more Orang Asli is the aboriginal people in Peninsular Malaysia who have been recognized as indigenous to the country and still practicing traditional lifestyle. The molecular interest on the Orang Asli started when the earliest prehistoric migration occurred approximately 200 kya and entering Peninsular Malaysia 50 kya in stages. A total of three groups of Orang Asli present in Peninsular Malaysia, namely, Negrito also known as Semang, Senoi and Proto Malays. Through records, there is no research has been conducted on mtDNA variations in the Semoq Beri population, one of the tribes in Senoi group. In this report, variations of mtDNA were analysed in the population in Hulu Terengganu as an initial effort to establish the genetic characterisation and elucidating the history of Orang Asli expansion in Peninsular Malaysia.

A total of 470 individuals were observe and recorded consisting of 16 species of mammals (8 families and 4 orders), 64 species of aves (25 families and 10 orders) and 20 species of herpetofauna (6 families and a single order). The highest species abundance for bats recorded was Bicoloured Roundleaf Bat (Hipposideros bicolor)

This data article is about non-volant small mammal (squirrel, rat and tree shrew) capture from fr... more This data article is about non-volant small mammal (squirrel, rat and tree shrew) capture from fragmented forest understories within suburban areas of Setiu (Peladang Agro Resort and Setiu Wetland Research Station) and inhabited areas of Hulu Terengganu (Saok and Lasir waterfalls) that are situated in Terengganu State, Peninsular Malaysia. Fruits like banana and oil palm were individually placed into each cage before the cages were fastened onto three to five meter height tree branches. The traps were also spatially distributed about ten meters from each other. Under this installation, fifty baited traps were used during the twenty-four nights of sample collection. All animals caught were distinguished by morphology and released at the same location it was caught. The understory data comprise of seven non-volant mammal species from family groups Sciuridae, Muridae and Tupaiidae. Overall, Callosciurus notatus (n ¼ 17, 39%) were dominant in the capture pool from all sites. Comparatively, Sundascriurus tenuis (n ¼ 2, 4%) and Rattus rattus (n ¼ 4, 9.3%) were restricted to Saok Waterfalls and Setiu Wetland. Banana and oil palm fruits did not attract any

This data article informs about Chiropteran diversity, new records, ecosystem services and possib... more This data article informs about Chiropteran diversity, new records, ecosystem services and possible pathogen carriers in fragmented forests (sub-divided by utility corridors, man-made structures, untouched and secondary plantations) within districts Setiu (Setiu Research Station), Hulu Terengganu (Saok and Lasir waterfalls) and Besut (Gunung Tebu Forest Reserve) of state Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia. These bats were captured using harp traps and mist nets that were set 10 m apart across flyways, streams and less cluttered trees in the 50 m Â 50 m transect zones (identified at each site). All animals were distinguished by morphology and gender before their release at the site of capture. The data comprise of five bat family groups Hipposideridae, Megadermatidae, Pteropodidae, Rhinolophi-dae and Vespertilionidae. It is interesting to note that untouched Saok Waterfalls is home to wide variety of bats listed (68.8%), followed by secondary forests of Gunung Tebu Forest Reserve (24.8%), untouched Lasir Waterfalls (4.8%) and lastly, Setiu Research Station as least favored (1.6%). Abstrak: Satu kajian kepelbagaian kelawar telah dijalankan di hutan dipterokarp Hulu Terengganu d... more Abstrak: Satu kajian kepelbagaian kelawar telah dijalankan di hutan dipterokarp Hulu Terengganu dan hutan Beach Ridges Interspersed with Swales (BRIS) tanah lembap Setiu di Terengganu untuk mengkaji kepelbagaian spesies, komposisi dan stratifikasi kelawar dari bawah hingga ke kanopi hutan. Jaring kelawar telah di pasang di bawah kanopi, sub-kanopi dan kanopi, manakala perangkap harp telah diletak pada lapisan bawah kanopi. Kami merekodkan 170 individu daripada enam keluarga dan 21 spesies dari hutan dipterokarp Hulu Terengganu dan lima spesies dari hutan BRIS tanah lembap Setiu sepanjang tempoh pensampelan. Megaerops ecaudatus dan Cynopterus brachyotis adalah spesies yang paling dominan dalam hutan dipterocarp Hulu Terengganu dan hutan BRIS tanah lembap Setiu. Kajian kami juga telah mencatatkan dua spesies yang mempunyai rekod penyebaran baru di pantai timur Malaysia, iaitu Rhinolophus chiewkweeae dan Chaerephon johorensis daripada hutan dipterokarp Hulu Terengganu. Faktor-faktor yang berpotensi mempengaruhi keputusan adalah dari segi litupan kanopi, kepelbagaian struktur kanopi, ketersediaan makanan dan ciri-ciri ruang. Kajian ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan mengenai kepelbagaian spesies dan komposisi kelawar di hutan dipterokarp Hulu Terengganu dan hutan BRIS tanah lembap Setiu. Dengan itu, kajian lanjut diperlukan dalam usaha pemuliharaan kelawar di kedua-dua kawasan tersebut.

Microsatellite DNA polymorphism of Macaca fascicularis populations in Malaysia

A total of 386 long-tailed macaques (M. fascicularis) from 17 populations in Malaysia was analyse... more A total of 386 long-tailed macaques (M. fascicularis) from 17 populations in Malaysia was analysed using eight polymorphic microsatellite loci on a microfluidic-based platform (Agilent DNA 1000 Chips on the Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer) to identify and evaluate the genetic polymorphism and population structure. The microfluidic-based chip platform provides simple, reliable and cost effective approach for microsatellite studies. Genetic diversity estimates showed that the Peninsular Malaysian populations are slightly more diverse than their Bornean conspecifics. Furthermore, weak population structuring among the peninsula populations suggest that they comprise of genetically contiguous populations. The Sarawak and Labuan populations were differentiated from the peninsula populations except for the Sabah population which is due to the low sample number from the latter. Interestingly, no matching genotype was found among all samples indicating that the loci set can be used for individual identification of M. fascicularis.

Bats of Malaysia: Using Genetics and Morphology to Examine Species Diversity of Old World Bats. Faisal. 2008.

A three-week field survey was conducted to sample bat species diversity in Malaysia. The survey s... more A three-week field survey was conducted to sample bat species diversity in Malaysia. The survey sampled five localities during August 2006, including one in Peninsular Malaysia and four in Borneo. A total of 259 specimens representing at least 50 species were recorded. Three sampling nights were spent at each locality; four harp traps and 15 mist nets were set most nights. The highest species diversity was recorded in Mount Penrisen (Borneo) with 27 species, whereas the lowest diversity was at Monggis Sub Station and Bako National Park (Borneo) with 13 species each. We added four new geographic records for Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo: Arielulus cuprosus, Hesperoptenus tomesi, Kerivoula lenis, and Myotis adversus; and the second record of Hipposideros doriae in Sarawak. Other findings included a colony of earwigs collected from an Eonycteris major and the documentation of highly developed facial glands on male Hipposideros ater and H. galeritus. Species were identified using traditional skin and skull characteristics as well as mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene sequences that were compared to existing GenBank records. This multifaceted approach, using genetic and morphological identifications, has provided greater resolution to species identification as well as a better understanding of the diversification of Old World Bats from Malaysia. Although in most cases genetic data validated the present taxonomy, there were still a number of cases of cryptic species suggesting an underestimation of the actual biodiversity. This study has demonstrated the value of genetic data in providing an independent test for species boundaries among the 50 species of bats collected (about 40% of the known Malaysian bat fauna).

PUTRAJAYA: International daily The Wall Street Journal has reported that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had sought former Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla to broker an accord with Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over the 13th general election.
However, the Opposition leader turned his back on the peace deal, Jusuf told the paper in a recent interview.
He said Anwar had approached him about an agreement two months ago and they met at his Jakarta home, where the PKR adviser asked him to reach out to Najib and secure his (the prime minister's) commitment for a peaceful election outcome.

Gomantong Cave, in Sabah, and Deer Cave at Mulu and Niah Great Cave, in Sarawak, are well known f... more Gomantong Cave, in Sabah, and Deer Cave at Mulu and Niah Great Cave, in Sarawak, are well known for their large bat populations. These caves are in national parks and are popular attractions for local and international tourists who come to watch the evening exodus of bats. It is estimated that around one million Wrinkle-lipped bats (Chaerephon plicata) exit Gomantong and Deer caves. The caves also possess a high diversity of bats – Gomantong –12, Deer –12 and Niah –19 species. These large, bat-occupied, popular tourist caves have a wide range of conflicting management issues. Gomantong and Niah caves are well known as collection sites of swiftlet nests for the birds’ nest industry. At Niah, the Naked Bat (Cheiromeles torquatus) has suffered a serious decline in numbers (18,000 to 20,000 in 1958 to approx 1,000 indivuduals) and the almost total disappearance of a large colony of the Cave Nectar Bat (Eonycteris spelaea) is of concern. Reasons for the declines are unclear, but pressure from hunting and habitat alteration consequent on nearby forest logging and land-clearance are suspected to be involved. Mining of guano from large areas of the cave has caused compaction of the floor and the loss of associated invertebrate fauna at Niah. Fortunately, and probably because of the large size of the caves, the activity of ecotourists appears to have little impact on the bats. These caves are highly significant sites and careful management is required to ensure the continued survival of their bat populations.

Many mammalian fossil teeth and bone fragments have been recovered from remnants of calcite cemen... more Many mammalian fossil teeth and bone fragments have been recovered from remnants of calcite cemented sediments attached to the walls and floors of two small caves, named as Cistern Cave and Swamp Cave, at the foot of Bukit Batu, Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur. Most of the material are disarticulated and found in isolated groups within the sediments. No complete skeletons have been found. They appeared to have been washed in by streams after disarticulation by decay or scattered by scavengers. Their presence in middens of prehistoric humans is a further possibility but this is still in question as no associated charring or distinct tool marks have been found on them. The material found to date includes: common wild pig (Sus scrofa), bearded pig (Sus barbatus), bear (Ursidae- gen. et sp. indet.), macaque (Macaca sp.), Primates (non-human hominoid), tiger (Panthera tigris), southern serow (Capricornis sumatraensis), red muntjac/barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak), sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), Asian tapir (Tapirus indicus), rhinoceros (gen. et sp. indet.) and bat teeth. Comparative studies with equivalent cave fossil fauna across South-east Asia will be carried out to interpret the paleoenvironment and paleoclimatic changes by studying the vertebrate fossils in different levels of cave deposits from the area.

Database: outdoor air pollution in cities

The database contains results of urban outdoor air pollution monitoring from almost 1100 cities in 91 countries. Air quality is represented by annual mean concentration of fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5, i.e. particles smaller than 10 or 2.5 microns).

The database covers the period from 2003 to 2010, with the majority of values for the years 2008 and 2009. The primary sources of data include publicly available national/subnational reports and web sites, regional networks such as the Asian Clean Air Initiative and the European Airbase, and selected publications. The database aims to be representative for human exposure, and therefore primarily captures measurements from monitoring stations located in urban background, urban traffic, residential, commercial and mixed areas.

The world's average PM10 levels by region range from 21 to 142 ug/m3, with a world's average of 71 ug/m3.

Assalamualaikum & Salam Sejahtera,

Dear all, please be informed we recently has confirmed case of FRST student
infected by leptospirosis, although at this stage I am not able to verify
source of infection but possibly from rats "operating" in various places in
our faculty.

Therefore, I would like to advise lab workers (lecturers/lab
assistants/postdocs/students etc) to take extra precaution when working in
the lab.

We have informed BPPA to take further action on this rat problem in our
faculty. We were informed university is in the process of renewing pest
control contract, and while waiting for that, we have taken some
precautionary measures such as placing rat glue traps. In addition, some
kind of "rat race" will be held. Further announcement will be made very
soon.

Assalamualaikum and Salam Sejahtera,

Refering to the email below we would like to suggest that an operation to reduce rat population in the Faculty premises (OPS TIKUS). This project is expected to commence on the 25th of April 2014 (Friday) 2:30 PM. A briefing on the materials and method will be given by En Wahap at the 3rd Floor main meeting room. After the meeting it is suggested that all the lab assistants coordinating the labs to collect the traps.

Materials and Method

Small mammal cage traps will be supplied for this purpose with selected baits (banana & salted fish- you are also welcome to experiment your own bait). A piece of news paper will be used where the traps are placed. Traps will be checked on Monday morning - Staff members should wear gloves, mask to cover you nose and mouth when handling rats. Rat poison will be inserted in the cage. The dead rats will be brought to EL or other suitable area to be buried.

Lecturers whose are interested to collect samples (parasite, blood etc) please get in touch with En Wahap.

Studies on the microbial ecology of gut microbiota in bats are limited and such information is necessary in determining the ecological significance of these hosts. Short-nosed fruit bats (Cynopterus brachyotis brachyotis) are good candidates for microbiota studies given their close association with humans in urban areas. Thus, this study explores the gut microbiota of this species from Peninsular Malaysia by means of biochemical tests and 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis. The estimation of viable bacteria present in the stomach and intestine of C. b. brachyotis ranged from 3.06 × 1010 to 1.36 × 1015 CFU/ml for stomach fluid and 1.92 × 1010 to 6.10 × 1015 CFU/ml for intestinal fluid. A total of 34 isolates from the stomach and intestine of seven C. b. brachyotis were retrieved. A total of 16 species of bacteria from eight gen- era (Bacillus, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Escherichia, Klebsiella, Pantoea, Pseudomonas and Serratia) were identified, Enterobacteriaceae being the most prevalent, contributing 12 out of 16 species isolated. Most isolates from the Family Enterobacteriaceae have been reported as pathogens to humans and wildlife. With the possibility of human wildlife transmission, the findings of this study focus on the importance of bats as reservoirs of potential bacterial pathogens.

Two clades of tapirs, Tapirus spp., have been recognized in Quaternary Southeast Asia. A review of sites at which they occurred shows that representatives of both clades, one of which was the ancestral Malayan tapir Tapirus indicus, co-existed with a diversity of other Pleistocene mammal megafauna. The process of replacement of archaic large mammals was progressive and prolonged through the Quaternary. Zooarcheological investigation has extended knowledge of the former occurrence and distribution of tapirs and other large mammals of the region, with discoveries beyond the outer limits of their previously known ranges. These large mammals were subjected to paleoenvironmental changes as a consequence of the Quaternary cycles of glacial and interglacial periods. Archeological evidence suggests that hunting pressure has intensified the effects of altered environments, leading ultimately to the local disappearance of the Malayan tapir in most of Southeast Asia, including Borneo. The survival of the Malayan tapir through the Quaternary until the present shows that the species is both resilient to environmental change and flexible in its ecological requirements and, given proper protection, could continue to inhabit tropical Southeast Asia. To assist the species’ conservation, reintroduction is proposed from the remaining range of Malayan tapir in the wild, to suitable sites of past occurrence in Borneo, where these ancient survivors of the Quaternary megafauna can be accommodated and safeguarded alongside other forms of land usage.

Abstract
Southeast-Asia (SEA) constitutes a global biodiversity hotspot, but is exposed to extensive deforestation and faces numerous threats to its biodiversity. Climate change represents a major challenge to the survival and viability of species, and the potential consequences must be assessed to allow for mitigation. We project the effects of several climate change scenarios on bat diversity, and predict changes in range size for 171 bat species throughout SEA. We predict decreases in species richness in all areas with high species richness (>80 species) at 2050–2080, using bioclimatic IPCC scenarios A2 (a severe scenario, continuously increasing human population size, regional changes in economic growth) and B1 (the ‘greenest’ scenario, global population peaking mid-century). We also predicted changes in species richness in scenarios that project vegetation changes in addition to climate change up to 2050. At 2050 and 2080, A2 and B1 scenarios incorporating changes in climatic factors predicted that 3–9% species would lose all currently suitable niche space. When considering total extents of species distribution in SEA (including possible range expansions), 2–6% of species may have no suitable niche space in 2050–2080. When potential vegetation and climate changes were combined only 1% of species showed no changes in their predicted ranges by 2050. Although some species are projected to expand ranges, this may be ecologically impossible due to potential barriers to dispersal, especially for species with poor dispersal ability. Only 1–13% of species showed no projected reductions in their current range under bioclimatic scenarios. An effective way to facilitate range shift for dispersal-limited species is to improve landscape connectivity. If current trends in environmental change continue and species cannot expand their ranges into new areas, then the majority of bat species in SEA may show decreases in range size and increased extinction risk within the next century."

Bacterial contamination in foods and antimicrobial resistance levels of common pathogenic strains... more Bacterial contamination in foods and antimicrobial resistance levels of common pathogenic strains causing food-borne disease are important in human health. Thus, typing technologies are important tools to determine primary sources of bacterial contamination. In this study, 40 Escherichia coli strains isolated from 85 food samples were evaluated in terms of genetic diversity, susceptibility to certain antibiotics, and plasmid profiles. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to identify the genetic relations of E. coli isolates. It was determined that the 40 E. coli strains revealed 32 different pulsotypes represented by 6 subtypes. Antibiotic susceptibility tests conducted by using a disc diffusion method against 15 antibiotics showed that although the isolates revealed 14 different types of resistance profiles, the strains showed the greatest resistance to ampicillin (77.5%), followed by ticarcillin–clavulanic acid (30%), tetracycline (22.5%), and cephalothin (14.5%). Plasmid isolations studies of the strains conducted by the method of alkaline lysis revealed that 18 (45%) of 40 E. coli strains contain 31 different plasmid bands ranging between 64.4 and 1 kb. The results showed that PFGE was a powerful method in tracking sources of food contamination and that the antibiotic resistance levels of food isolates were high and should be monitored.

In this context, this paper reports the results of an analysis of a novel line of evidence as a local scale case study. 22 dated assemblages of bat bones that were recovered from the archaeological sequences of the Great Cave of Niah in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo were examined. By examination of the morphological characteristics of the distal articulation of the humerus, seven families and nine genera were identified. Five species level attri- butions could be made. These assemblages formed a time series of 14 chronological intervals 48–0.35 ky BP (ky BP: 103 calibrated years before present [1950]) incorporating samples from the high glacial interval (26–18 ky BP) and Last Glacial Maximum (23–19 ky BP).
Bones of bat taxa that are adapted to forage in the cluttered environments in the interior of closed canopy forest (“Strategy I” bats) were employed as proxy evidence for the presence of closed canopy forested habi- tats in the vicinity (b30 km radius) of the Great Cave."

The Gomantong cave system of eastern Sabah, Malaysia, is well-known as an important site for the harvesting of edible bird’s-nests and, more recently, as a tourist attraction. Although the biology of the Gomantong system has been repeatedly studied, very little work has been done of the geomorphology. Here we report on the impact of geobiological modification in the development of the modern aspect of the cave, an important but little recognized feature of tropical caves. Basic modelling of the metabolic outputs from bats and birds (CO2, H2O, heat) reveals that post-speleogenetic biogenic corrosion can erode bedrock by between ~3.0 mm/ka (1 m/~300 ka) and ~4.6 mm/ka (1 m/~200 ka). Modelling at high bat densities yields corrosion rates of ~34 mm/ka (or 1 m/~30 ka). Sub-aerial corrosion creates a previously undescribed speleological feature, the apse-flute, semicircular in cross-section, ~80 cm wide, vertical regardless of rock properties, developing in parallel but apparently completely independently, and often unbroken from roof to floor. They end at a blind hemi-spherical top with no extraneous water source. Half-dome ceiling conch pockets are remnants of previous apse-fluting. Sub-cutaneous corrosion creates the floor-level guano notch formed by organic acid dissolution of bedrock in contact with guano. Speleogenetic assessment suggests that as much as 70-95% of the total volume of the modern cave may have been opened by direct subaerial biogenic dissolution and biogenically-induced collapse, and by sub- cutaneous removal of limestone, over a timescale of 1-2 Ma.

To date, there are more than 90 species of bats recorded in Borneo. Despite the numerous information published on the diversity of bats, it is still considered scarce especially the one on the interior part of Sarawak. A bat survey was carried out at
Camp 5, Mulu World Heritage Area from 3rd until 9th April 2012. Rhinolophus affinis was recorded for the first time in Mulu World Heritage Area and this had increased the current list to 41 species of bats for the park. The data represents the first bat survey of Camp 5, Mulu World Heritage Area and this helps to increase
the knowledge of the bats diversity in limestone areas in Sarawak.

The type locality is Empakuq village (1o 19’ 8.11” S, 120o6’ 8” E), Melak District, Kutai, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Descriptive and multivariate Analyses were used toreveal the variation and distinctive characters of this new species from its closest relatives. Results depicted that the morphology of new species M. tajuddinii sp. nov. resembles that of M. whiteheadi Thomas, 1894, which occurs throughout the Borneo island. Nine characters distinguish the new species: (1) sharp demarcation on the flanks between the dorsal and ventral pelage; (2) tail slightly similar to longer than head and body length, tapered and bicoloured, brownish black on dorsal surface and creamy white on ventral surface; (3) individual hairs covering head and body long, thick, and spinous, resulting in a dense pelage; (4) brownish orange buff dorsal pelage, with long, dense, spinous, black tipped guard hairs and creamy white ventral pelage; (5) rostrum long and narrow relative to overall skull size; (6) incisive foramina narrow relative to length, with posterior margins located slightly anterior to first molar; (7) first upper molar with three roots; (8) cusp t4complete on first and second molars; and (9) 10 – 12scales per cm on tail. Morphologically, M. tajuddinii sp. nov. is unlike any other described species of Maxomys known to occur on Borneo. M. tajuddinii is thenew species occurs in sympatry with M. whitehead Thomas, 1894 in peatswamp forests, logged mixed dipterocarp forests or waterlogged and periodically inundated sandy clay soil dominated by kerangas vegetation.

We genetically analysed 50 specimens of Murinae from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, assigned to... more We genetically analysed 50 specimens of Murinae from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, assigned to 12 species. Phylogenetic analyses of partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (476 base pairs) using four methods, namely, neighbour-joining (NJ), maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian method resulted in similar statistically supported clades with minimal change in branching order. The analyses discovered that there were intermediate form of Maxomys species within M. whiteheadi and M. ochraceiventer populations. They display same external morphology as M. whiteheadi but genetically closer to M. ochraceiventer. Craniodental measurements showed significant differences between the three populations. Rattus and Sundamys appeared not fully resolved while Leopoldamys and Niviventer were steadily clustered. The intraspecific geographic variation in some species agrees with previous studies on the vicariance scenario and diversification of flora and fauna in Malaysia and Borneo.

Morphological studies were done on thirteen species of Maxomys, namely Maxomys whiteheadi small form (S), Maxomys surifer, Maxomys rajah, Maxomys ochraceiventer, Maxomys baeodon, Maxomys alticola, Maxomys pagensis, Maxomys bartelsii, Maxomys inas, Maxomys whiteheadi large form (L), Maxomys musschenbroekii, Maxomys hellwaldii and Maxomys wattsi. Twenty-four characters of the skull and dentition were observed from 187 adult individuals of Maxomys. Two separate analyses were done on the morphological data namely (1) principal component analysis (PCA) and (2) discriminant function analysis (DFA). The braincase breadth (BB), zygomatic breadth (ZB), nasal length (NL), palatal length (PL) and the greatest skull length (GSL) were identified as important characters contributing to high factors loading. The findings from all these analyses supported the groupings of the Maxomys into 13 species, namely, M. whiteheadi (S), M. surifer, M. rajah, M. ochraceiventer, M. baeodon, M. alticola, M. musschenbroekii, M. hellwaldii, M. wattsi, M. pagensis, M. bartelsii, M. inas and one new form of M. whiteheadi (L). The multiple regression analyses indicated no sexual dimorphism exhibited by cranial, dental and dentary traits; but there were significantly influenced by geographical distributions. Phylogenetic analyses was done on ten available Maxomys samples utilising 480 basepair of the Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene. The reconstruction of the phylogenetic trees depicting the relationships of Maxomys were retrieved using Neighbor- joining (NJ), Maximum parsimony (MP) and Maximum likelihood (ML). All analyses consistently resulted in eight groups (supported by moderate to high bootstrap values; 82 – 100% NJ, 64 – 100% MP, 66 – 100% ML and 0.57 – 1.0 pp for Bayesian analysis), namely M. surifer, M. whiteheadi (S), M. hellwaldii, M. bartelsii, M. wattsi, M. pagensis, M. ochraceiventer and M. rajah. Within the M. whiteheadi group, there were three subgroups consisted of M. whiteheadi (S), M. musschenbroekii and a cryptic species described in this study as a namely M. whiteheadi (L). This observation was supported by high genetic divergence among populations (9.8% ± 0.08 and 9.2% ± 0.08) which was comparable to those of genetically distinctive species. Both the morphometric and the phylogenetic analyses showed similar patterns of groupings within Maxomys, together with the finding of distinct M. whileheadi (L). Morphological analyses utilized in the PCA and the DFA methods consistently grouped the Maxomys samples according to their morphotypes and phylogenetic analysis had successfully elucidated the monophyly of the species within this genus. The rough estimation of divergence time for the diversification of Maxomys species began around 14.62 million years ago (Mya) until 0.42 Mya (Mid-Miocene to Pleistocene epoch) among islands in Indo-Malayan archipelago. Detailed descriptions of the new form of M. whiteheadi (L) was done using descriptive statistics, morphological and genetic analyses. Finally, the biogeographic patterns and evolutionary process of this genus indicated that the dispersion of Maxomys occurred in the Tertiary period and the Quaternary period. During that period of time, a relatively stable perhumid climate had characterised the region for several millions of years and tropical rain forest was widespread, presumably on exposed regions of the Sunda Shelf as well as on the islands, peninsula and mainland. The Pleistocene epoch which was characterised by cool, arid and covered in large part by savanna-like vegetation gave opportunities to the murids populations from the Pleistocene refuges to colonise suitable habitats following the rise in temperature and the spreading of the tropical rainforest in the Sunda region.

Biogeografi dan Variasi Maxomys (Rodentia, Muridae) dari Timur dan Barat Garisan Wallace’s

Abstrak
Kajian biogeografi ke atas tiga belas spesies genus Maxomys, Murinae di Asia Tenggara dari Malaysia dan Kepulauan Indonesia telah dijalankan dengan menggunakan analisis morfometrik dan filogenetik. Kajian morfologi telah dijalankan ke atas 13 spesies Maxomys, iaitu M. whiteheadi (S), M. surifer, M. rajah, M. ochraceiventer, M. baeodon, M. alticola, M. pagensis, M. bartelsii, M. inas, M. whiteheadi (L), M. musschenbroekii, M. hellwaldii dan M. wattsi. Dua puluh empat ciri ukuran tengkorak dan gigi telah diambil daripada 187 individu dewasa genus tersebut. Dua analisa berasingan telah dilakukan ke atas data-data morfologi iaitu (1) analisa „principal component‟ (PCA) dan (2) analisa „discriminant function‟ (DFA). „Braincase breadth‟ (BB), „zygomatic breadth‟ (ZB), „nasal length‟ (NL), „palatal length‟ (PL) dan „greatest skull length‟ (GSL) teridentifikasi sebagai karakter penting pada analisa ini. Hasil dari kedua-dua analisis telah menyokong pembahagian genus Maxomys kepada 13 spesies, iaitu M. whiteheadi (S), M. surifer, M. rajah, M. ochraceventer, M. baeodon, M. alticola, M. musschenbroekii, M. hellwaldii, M. wattsi, M. pagensis, M. bartelsii, M. inas dan penemuan satu bentuk baru M. whiteheadi (L). Analisa „multiple regression‟ menunjukkan bahawa tiada perbezaan antara kedua-dua jantina dari segi ukuran tengkorak dan gigi, sebaliknya perbezaan didapati dalam taburan geografi. Analisa filogenetik telah dilakukan ke atas 10 sampel Maxomys dengan menggunakan 480 jujukan bes gen sitokrom oksida I (COI). Pembinaan semula pokok filogenetik untuk menunjukkan perhubungan di antara Maxomys telah dilakukan dengan mengunakan tiga jenis analisis, iaitu „neighbor-joining‟ (NJ), „maximum parsimony‟ (MP) dan „maximum likelihood‟ (ML). Kesemua analisa menunjukkan hasil yang konsisten iaitu pembahagian sampel kepada lapan kumpulan (didukung oleh nilai “bootstrap” yang sederhana sehingga tinggi; 82 – 100% NJ, 64 – 100% MP, 66 – 100% ML and 0.57 – 1.0 pp untuk analisa Bayesian), iaitu M. surifer, M. whiteheadi, M. hellwaldii, M. bartelsii, M. wattsi, M. pagensis, M. ochraceiventer dan M. rajah. Kumpulan M. whiteheadi mengandungi tiga subkumpulan iaitu M. whiteheadi (S), M. musschenbroekii dan spesies kriptik yang seterusnya digambarkan sebagai bentuk baru, M. whiteheadi (L). Ini juga disokong dengan nilai peratusan jarak genetik yang besar di antara populasi (9.8% ± 0.08 dan 9.2% ± 0.08) yang mana ianya setanding dengan nilai yang didapati untuk dua spesies yang berlainan. Keputusan analisa morfometrik dan filogenetik menunjukkan pembahagian kumpulan yang sama bagi spesies-spesies Maxomys walaupun dengan menggunakan kaedah dan taksiran data yang berbeza. Secara keseluruhannya, pembahagian kumpulan Maxomys adalah sama walaupun terdapat perbezaan dari segi topologi. Kedua-dua analisis telah menyokong pembahagian kumpulan Maxomys seperti yang sebelumnya, bersama dengan pengenalpastian bentuk baru M. whiteheadi (L). Analisa morfologi menunjukkan pembahagian kumpulan yang konsisten ke atas sampel-sampel Maxomys berdasarkan klasifikasi morfologi, manakala analisa filogenetik telah berjaya menjelaskan status monofiletik bagi genus ini. Anggaran kasar pemisahan bagi genus Maxomys adalah 14.62 juta tahun dahulu sehingga 0.42 juta tahun dahulu (Pertengahan „Miocene‟ sehingga „Pleistocene‟) di antara Malaysia dan Kepulauan Indonesia. Deskripsi terperinci ke atas M. whiteheadi (L). telah dijalankan dengan menggunakan analisa deskriptif, morfologi dan genetik. Corak taburan biogeografi dan proses evolusi bagi genus ini menunjukkan bahawa penyebaran genus Maxomys berlaku pada era Tertiar dan Pleistocene. Sepanjang masa tersebut, kawasan terdedah Pentas Sunda termasuk pulau-pulau, semenanjung dan tanah besar digambarkan mengalami iklim lembap yang stabil dan hutan hujan tropikal yang tersebar luas untuk beberapa juta tahun. Era Pleistocene juga disifatkan sebagai sejuk, gersang dan sebahagian besarnya diliputi hutan savana yang telah membenarkan populasi tikus untuk menguasai habitat yang bersesuaian seiring dengan penyebaran dan perkembangan hutan hujan tropika.

Species diversity and abundance of bats are important in providing new information and updates on their current distribution in Malaysia. A total of 1,278 individuals comprising of 47 species from seven families were recorded in 18 sampling sites which covered seven areas in Peninsular Malaysia and 11 areas in Sarawak. Out of 47 species caught, 11 species were captured only in Sarawak, 13 species were recorded only in Peninsular Malaysia while the other 23 species were caught in both regions. The Royal Belum Forest Reserve is the most diverse region (Fisher’s α = 18.57) with 10 individuals of eight species from four families. Five ecological types were identified among the 18 sampling sites, namely, primary forest, regenerated forest, urban forest, monoculture plantation and orchard. The data from all 18 sampling sites were pooled according to the habitat types. Regenerated forest is the most diverse ecological site (Fisher’s α = 10.420) with 633 individuals comprising of 42 species from six families. Phylogenetic relationship among selected species within genus Hipposideros were inferred from mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b (cyt b) and nuclear DNA Recombinant Activating Gene 2 (Rag 2). Phylogenetic Analysis Using Parsimony (PAUP) version 4.0 beta and MrBayes software were used to construct four phylogenetic trees. The former was used to construct the Neighbor Joining (NJ), maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) tress while the latter was used to construct the Bayesian tree. Generally, phylogenetic relationship of genus Hipposideros inferred from cyt b was successfully reviewed. The interspecies and intraspecies relationship of this genus was supported with high bootstrap value and the group placement was consistent in all tree analyses. Four major groups were identified within this genus with the grouping of H. larvatus and H. armiger as basal clade. Phylogenetic relationship inferred from Rag 2 gene were only resolve to the extent of interspecies relationship. In the Rag 2 gene tree analyses, three major groups were identified. The arrangement of groups in NJ was slightly differed compare to MP, ML and Bayesian tree analyses. Generally the grouping of species in the genus was congruent with grouping in cyt b analysis. Phylogenetic relationship of genus Hipposideros were successfully constructed using mtDNA cyt b and nDNA Rag 2. In addition, this study provides new information and re-confirmation on phylogenetic relationship in the genus Hipposideros. A larger sample size and a longer gene region should be used for future studies to improve the understanding of some complex species in this genus.

Diversiti Ekologi dan Hubungan Filogenetik Hipposideros (Chiroptera: Hipposideridae) di Malaysia berdasarkan dari Mitokondria DNA Cyt b dan Nuklear DNA Gen Nuklear Aktivasi Rekombinan 2

Abstrak

Kepelbagaian spesies dan kelimpahan kelawar di 18 lokasi yang dipilih di Malaysia yang merangkumi tujuh tempat di semenanjung Malaysia dan 11 tempat di Sarawak dibincangkan. Senarai spesies dan kelimpahan kelawar dalam kajian ini adalah penting dalam menyediakan maklumat baru dan terkini tentang kelawar di kawasan tertentu di Malaysia. Sebanyak 1,278 individu terdiri daripada 47 spesies daripada tujuh keluarga di rekodkan di 18 lokasi kajian. Daripada 47 spesies yang ditangkap, 11 spesies hanya ditangkap di Sarawak, 13 spesies hanya ditangkap di semenanjung Malaysia manakala 23 spesies yang lain ditangkap di kedua-dua kawasan tersebut. Hutan Simpan Diraja Belum merupakan kawasan yang paling pelbagai (Fisher’s α = 18.57) dengan 10 individu dari lapan spesies daripada empat keluarga. Lima jenis habitat ekologi telah dikenalpasti diantara 18 lokasi kajian iaitu hutan dara, hutan dalam proses pertumbuhan baru, hutan bandar, ladang monokultur dan kawasan kebun. Data yang diperolehi dari 18 kawasan kajian di kumpulkan mengikut jenis habitat. Hutan dalam proses pertumbuhan baru merupakan kawasan yang paling pelbagai (Fisher’s α = 10,420) dengan 633 individu terdiri daripada 42 spesies daripada enam keluarga. Hubungan filogenetik antara spesies yang dipilih dalam genus Hipposideros berdasarkan dari mitokondria DNA cyt b dan nuklear DNA gen nuklear aktivasi rekombinan 2. Perisian Analisis filogenetik menggunakan parsimoni versi 4.0 beta dan MrBayes digunakan untuk membina empat pokok filogenetik. Perisian yang pertama digunakan untuk membina pokok ‘neighbour joining’ (NJ), ‘Maximum parsimony’ (MP) dan ‘maximum likelihood’ (ML) manakala perisian kedua digunakan untuk membina pokok ‘Bayesian’. Umumnya, hubungan filogenetik genus Hipposideros berdasarkan dari cyt b berjaya dikaji.Hubungan intraspesies dan interspesies dari genus ini disokong dengan nilai ‘bootstrap’ yang tinggi dan penempatan kumpulan adalah stabil di semua analisis pokok. Empat kumpulan utama telah dikenalpasti dalam genus ini dan pengelompokan H. larvatus dan H. armiger sebagai kumpulan akar. Hubungan filogenetik dari gen nuklear aktivasi rekombinan hanya menyelesaikan hubungan intraspesies dan sesetengah hubungan interspesies didalam genus Hipposideros. Di dalam analisis pokok gen nuklear aktivasi rekombinan 2, tiga kumpulan utama telah dikenalpasti. Susunan spesies didalam kumpulan ‘neighbour joining’ sedikit berbeza berbanding dengan ‘maximum parsimony’, ‘maximum likelihood’ dan analisis pokok ‘Bayesian’. Secara umumnya pengelompokan spesies didalam genus ini sama dengan pengelompokan didalam analisis cyt b. Kajian ini membekalkan maklumat baru dan kepastian kepada hubungan filogenetik dalam genus Hipposideros. Saiz sampel yang lebih besar dan size gen yang lebih panjang patut digunakan untuk kajian masa hadapan agar dapat memperbaiki pemahaman ke atas beberapa spesies yang kompleks dalam genus ini.

The Human Variome Project (http://www.humanvariomeproject.org) is an international effort aiming ... more The Human Variome Project (http://www.humanvariomeproject.org) is an international effort aiming to systematically collect and share information on all human genetic variation. The two main pillars of this effort are gene/disease-specific databases and a network of Human Variome Project Country Nodes. The latter are nationwide efforts to document the genomic variation reported within a specific population. The development and successful operation of the Human Variome Project Country Nodes are of utmost importance to the success of Human Variome Project's aims and goals because they not only allow the genetic burden of disease to be quantified in different countries, but also provide diagnosticians and researchers access to an up-to-date resource that will assist them in their daily clinical practice and biomedical research, respectively. Here, we report the discussions and recommendations that resulted from the inaugural meeting of the International Confederation of Countries Advisory Council, held on 12th December 2011, during the 2011 Human Variome Project Beijing Meeting. We discuss the steps necessary to maximize the impact of the Country Node effort for developing regional and country-specific clinical genetics resources and summarize a few well-coordinated genetic data collection initiatives that would serve as paradigms for similar projects. Changing nature of health crisis from infectious diseases and responses over three decades in Malaysia by Mohd Taha Arif.

ABSTRACT: The author relates his 35 years experiences serving the public health sector in various capacities at district, state and country levels in Malaysia. He described several important outbreaks encountered such as malaria, dengue, cholera, enterovirus encephalitis, Nipah virus encephalitis, avian influenza, SARS and leptospirosis. He discussed the determinants of infectious diseases outbreak such as the pathogenicity of the organism, the environmental factors, human and animal factors. The impact of these outbreaks affected the economy, psychosocial, political and international relations. The responses to these outbreaks had improved along with the development of new technologies in diagnosis, surveillance, information technology and human resource development. The author also identified the importance of networking, appropriate risk and crisis communication and the management of the after effect of the outbreak. Apart from outbreak preparedness plan, research remains an important tool in discovering new diseases and appropriate ways of responding to the crisis.

This effort is between the NSRL and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Professor Dr. M. T. Abdullah) through a memorandum of understanding between both institutions in developing long term educational goals. Other collaborators include the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Dr. Sivanathan Ellagupillay) and Sabah Park (Dr. Marklarin Lakim). A joint three-week field expedition between TTU and UNIMAS was conducted to sample bats and mammal species diversity in Malaysia. The survey sampled five localities during August 2006, including one in Peninsular Malaysia and four in Borneo.

In 1990s, no fresh tracks were found in Endau Rompin and Taman Negara.
Unfortunately, the 1983 and 1984 data were recycled by certain people with disregard to the real unpublished data known among field biologists.
This paper documented the seriousness of the rhinos management problem leading to local extinction.

Distribution and status of the Sumatran rhinoceros Dicerorhinus sumatrensis in Peninsular Malaysi... more Distribution and status of the Sumatran rhinoceros Dicerorhinus sumatrensis in Peninsular Malaysia were studied from 1975 to 1981. We compiled information collected from field surveys, interviews with people living near rhino areas, and the literature. Most potential rhino areas were surveyed on the ground to confirm the presence of animals, estimate numbers, and evaluate the status of the habitat. We confirmed that rhinos presently occur in ten isolated areas scattered throughout the Malay Peninsula. The number of rhinos is estimated at 50 to 75 animals with the Endau-Rompin (20–25), Taman Negara (8–12), and Sungai Dusun (4–6) areas containing the largest contiguous populations. The Sumatran rhino appears threatened with immediate extinction in Peninsular Malaysia. Excessive killing of rhinos because of the high commercial value of their body parts has greatly reduced numbers. Habitat destruction from logging and forest clearance has separated and isolated already small populations. We recommend that conservation efforts for this species in Malaysia be concentrated in the Endau-Rompin region because this population has the best chances for survival.

Abstract

Bait trials using burnt coconut, burnt salt-fish and peanut butter for trapping urban rodent and insectivores were carried out at two residential areas and a rice field plot around Tanjung Priok, Jakarta from July to September 1977. Traps baited with cotton wool used as controls.

Coconut was found to be a better bait than salt-fish in residential areas, whilst both baits were observed to be equally as good in rice field. Peanut butter was least accepted in both habitats.

Salt-fish and coconut were found to be equally acceptable baits for R. r. diardii. Coconut was preferred to saltfish by R. r. norvegicus, and salt-fish was preferred to coconut by S. murinus, but R. argentiventer was shown to feed on coconut only. Bait preference by individual species of rodents and insectivores in relation to their feeding behaviours was discussed.

Overall results showed that coconut was the most effective bait followed by salt-fish and least effective was peanut butter. Flavors of these baits as an additional attractant to house and field rats was also discussed.

Bahagian otak tersebut tidak lagi menerima oksigen yang mencukupi dan sel-sel otak akan rosak atau mati, dan mengakibatkan bahagian badan yang dikuasai oleh bahagian otak itu tidak berfungsi.

Dalam bulan Oktoer 2013, Selepas menghabiskan kerja pejabat, editing BJRST, menyelesaikan pelbagai permasalahan pelajar, saya pulang kerumah pada jam 730pm. Ketika membuka kunci dan cuba menarik gate besi, saya terasa sakit di dada kiri, belakang dan tangan kiri serta merta tidak dapat diangkat. Hafez keluar bantu membuka gate dan pintu rumah. Selepas berihat satu jam, tangan kiri dapat berfungsi kembali.

Kemungkinan TIA berikutnya semasa dalam syarahan Biodiversiti. Selepas berjumpa Dr Morni beliau telah membuat rujukan kepada Pusat Jantung dan kerana pusat itu menolak rawatan maka saya pergi ke Hospital Besar Sarawak.

Di HBS, saya telah ditahan untuk pemerhatian dari pukul 730 ptg hingga 1.30 pagi. HBS membuat rujukan kepada PJ dengan heart scan dan MRI yang mendapati semua arteri dalam keadaan normal

Dalam awal bulan Disember 2013, saya mengalami keadaan yg semasa dalam mesyuarat Forum Biodiversiti. Saya telah dihantar ke Hospital Besar KL dan diletak dibawah pemerhatian dari jam 430 ptg hingga 1.30 mlm. Pemeriksaan di IJN juga mengatakan semuanya normal.

Pesanan cardiologist IJN ialah empat perkara penting tingkatkan kesihatan;
1. kurangkan gula atau nasi dan roti putih
2. kurangkan makanan berlemak dan berminyak
3. kerapkan senaman
4. kurangkan stress dgn bersosial, ada hobi, berkebun dll"

Syarat Am permohonan kemasukan ke IPTA bagi Program Pengajian Lepasan SPM/Setaraf adalah seperti berikut:
Warganegara Malaysia dan
Memiliki kelayakan Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia/setaraf (SPM/setaraf) dengan mendapat sekurang-kurangnya LIMA (5) kepujian termasuk Bahasa Melayu dan lulus Sejarah dalam peperiksaan SPM.
Program pengajian untuk Bumiputera dan Bukan Bumiputera:
Semua program di UITM, program Asasi di UIAM, program Asasi Sains dan program Asasi Alam Bina di UM, program Asasi di UNIMAS, program Asasi di UMS terbuka kepada Bumiputera sahaja.
Semua program asasi di UPM, UKM, UPNM, program Asasi Pengajian Islam di UM, program Tahmidi di USIM dan semua program Diploma di UPM, UTM, UPSI, UTHM, UMT, UTeM, UMP, UniMAP dan UniSZA dan Politeknik Premier terbuka kepada pemohon Bumiputera dan Bukan Bumiputera.

Syarat Am permohonan kemasukan ke IPTA bagi Program Pengajian Lepasan STPM/Setaraf adalah seperti berikut:
Terbuka kepada Warganegara Malaysia yang mempunyai Nombor Kad Pengenalan/My Kad dan Bukan Warganegara Malaysia.
Bagi Bukan Warga Negara Malaysia perlu memohon terus ke IPTA berkaitan.
Lulus SPM atau peperiksaan yang diiktiraf setaraf dengannya oleh Kerajaan Malaysia serta mendapat kepujian dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Melayu. Kepujian Bahasa Malaysia/Bahasa Melayu Kertas Julai diambil kira; dan
Lulus Peperiksaan Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) tahun 2013 dengan mendapat sekurang-kurangnya PNGK 2.00 dan mendapat sekurang-kurangnya:
Gred C (NGMP 2.00) dalam mata pelajaran Pengajian Am, dan
Gred C (NGMP 2.00) dalam dua (2) mata pelajaran lain, atau
Mendapat sekurang-kurangnya PNGK 2.00 di peringkat Matrikulasi/Asasi tahun 2013; atau
Mendapat sekurang-kurangnya Pangkat Jayyid di peringkat Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia STAM tahun 2013 atau 2012; atau
Mempunyai kelulusan Diploma atau kelulusan lain yang diiktiraf setaraf dengannya oleh Kerajaan Malaysia dan diluluskan oleh Senat IPTA; atau
Lulus peperiksaan STPM Tahun 2012 dan sebelumnya dengan mendapat sekurang-kurangnya Gred C (NGMP 2.00) dalam tiga (3) mata pelajaran termasuk Pengajian Am atau Matrikulasi/Asasi Tahun 2012 dan sebelumnya dengan mendapat sekurang-kurangnya PNGK 2.00 atau STAM tahun 2011 dan sebelumnya dengan mendapat sekurang-kurangnya Tahap Jayyid; dan
Mendapat sekurang-kurangnya Tahap 1 (Band 1) dalam Malaysian University English Test (MUET).
