Herbal Medicines used in the Traditional Indian Medicinal System as a Therapeutic Treatment option for Diabetes Management : A Review

In recent years, diabetes has become a major health problem worldwide, affecting people across all ages, sex, ethnicities, and races, and its prevalence has been increasing at an alarming rate. Currently, pharmacologic agents available to treat diabetes carry high costs and serious side effects. In contrast, natural products used in the conventional Indian medicinal system have been applied effectively in clinical practice and may be potential targets in the development of future cost effective anti-diabetic drugs with less side effects. In the modern era, various medicines have been developed for hyperglycemic, but nearly all are chemical or biochemical agents. A list of medicinal plants with proven anti-diabetic and related beneficial effects and of herbal drugs used in treatment of diabetes is compiled. There is a need to create awareness regarding the evidence for and use of herbal medicines in the management and treatment of diabetes. The wealth of tribal knowledge on medicinal plants points to a great potential for research and the discovery of new drugs to fight diseases including diabetes, obtaining new foods and other new uses. The purpose of this review was to examine medicinal plants that may be promising alternative treatments in the management and treatment of diabetes, especially in India.

Methods: The present study was conducted to determine the beneficial outcomes of PHF along with metformin by studying herb-drug interactions. PHF was prepared by five indigenous herbs, Those are being used traditionally as antidiabetic in India. PHF doses (100 mg/kg/day) were administered to Sprague-Dawley rats by an oral route of different groups for multiple weeks except for control. Metformin (100 mg/kg) was orally administered at 7th and 30th day to control and PHF pretreated rats for pharmacokinetics study while pharmacodynamics study was conducted in PHF treated and untreated diabetic rats. Particularly, we investigated the effects of timed food availability on activity behavior, and Fos and neuropeptide Y expressions in Indian weaverbirds (Ploceus philippinus) under atypical light conditions. Initially, weaverbirds in 3 groups of 7-8 each were entrained to 7L:17D (25: <0.3lx) with food ad libitum. Thereafter, food availability was restricted for 7h such that it overlapped with the light period. After a week, 7L:17D was replaced with 3.5L: 3.5D (T7, group 1), 3.5L: 20.5D (T24, group 2) or constant dim light, LLdim (<0.3lx, group 3) for 5weeks. The study was done to determine the role of anti inflammatory cytokines in clinical stages of ova... more The study was done to determine the role of anti inflammatory cytokines in clinical stages of ovarian cancer. Total 160 subjects were recruited for the study, 80 subjects were histopathologically diagnosed cases of ovarian cancer and 80 healthy subjects as a control group. Following the FIGO classification 6 of the tumors (7.5%) were stage I, 11 (13.75%) stage II, 26 (32.5%) stage III, and 37 (46.25%) stage IV. The circulating serum levels of IL-10 and IL-6 were estimated by ELISA method. The serum level of IL-10 & IL-6 was found significantly higher in study group than control group i.e 10.02±2.14 vs 2.35±1.37 (p<0.001) and 6.20±2.04 vs 3.54±0.90 (p<0.001) respectively. This study concludes that the IL-10 can be used as diagnostic factor for early detection of ovarian cancer and IL-6 can be used as aggressive management of the disease.

This study measured the expression levels of DIO2, DIO3, GnRH, and GnIH genes in Indian weaver birds subjected to short days (8h light:16h darkness, 8L:16D) and long days (16L:8D) for 48weeks. Whereas small, reproductively inactive testes were maintained under short days, weaver birds underwent testis recrudescence - regression cycle under long days. Relative expression levels of DIO2, DIO3, GnRH and GnIH genes were quantified by the real-time PCR (qPCR) in hypothalamus of birds (n=4) sampled at the beginning of the experiments, and after 10 and 48weeks of short and long day exposures. Antianxiety effect of cannabis: Involvement of central benzodiazepine receptors

The present work, involving clinical, behavioral, and biochemical studies, was undertaken to eluc... more The present work, involving clinical, behavioral, and biochemical studies, was undertaken to elucidate the probable mechanism of the observed antianxiety effects of cannabis. The population for the clinical study consisted of 50 male chronic cannabis users who were otherwise healthy and 50 matched controls. When evaluated on Taylor&#39;s Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMA), these subjects had low anxiety scores as compared with the controls. To explore the possible interaction of cannabis with the benzodiazepine receptors, behavioral and biochemical studies in mice were devised, involving acute and chronic cannabis administration. Behavioral study revealed that mice under chronic cannabis treatment scored significantly higher on foot shock-induced aggression, but this was significantly blocked by benzodiazepine receptor antagonist. Furthermore, chronic cannabis treatment significantly (p less than 0.001) increased the frequency of licking response periodically punished by shocks. This confirms the antianxiety effect of cannabis, which also appears to be mediated through a benzodiazepine receptor, as it was reduced significantly (p less than 0.001) by a benzodiazepine receptor blocker. Specific 3H-diazepam binding was carried out in frontal cortex to assess both the population and affinity of benzodiazepine receptors. Our results indicate that acute cannabis treatment has no significant effect, whereas chronic cannabis treatment significantly increased 3H-diazepam binding as compared with controls. Scatchard analysis further reveals that increased affinity is responsible for increased binding to these receptors. It is therefore our contention that the antianxiety effect of cannabis is mediated through central benzodiazepine receptors.
