The article examines the moral questions that arise from the military use of enhancement technolo... more The article examines the moral questions that arise from the military use of enhancement technologies and claims that emerging biotechnologies can help improve the attitudes and capabilities of the soldiers without jeopardizing their integrity and humanity. Even if the military use of enhancement technologies is considered ethically justifiable, our conclusion is that soldiers should ever be compelled to take drugs or receive biotechnological treatments they object to.

In our species, men are "potentially fertile" for entire life, as they can produce sperm capable of fertilizing an egg until death. Secondo una prospettiva al tempo stesso etico-filosofica e socio-giuridica, e senza tralasciare l... more Secondo una prospettiva al tempo stesso etico-filosofica e socio-giuridica, e senza tralasciare la spiegazione scientifica, il volume affronta le potenzialità e le criticità bioetiche che contraddistinguono l'accesso alle biotecnologie e la loro applicazione. Gli scenari della biomedicina cambiano così velocemente che le conclusioni bioetiche vanno ripensate a partire dai nuovi dilemmi morali. La questione che si pone non è più se sia moralmente accettabile interferire con i processi naturali, ma se abbiamo il diritto di impiegare le nuove tecnologie che permettono di correggere il genoma per ridisegnare le caratteristiche delle generazioni future, degli animali non umani e dell'ambiente. / From an ethical-philosophical, socio-legal and scientific persective, the book addresses the bioethical issues characterizing biotechnology and its application. Biomedical scenarios change so quickly that bioethical conclusions need to be rethought starting from new moral dilemmas. The question is no longer whether it is morally acceptable to interfere with natural processes, but whether we are entitled to use new technologies to correct genome, biologically redesigning future generations, non-human animals and the environment.

Human Extinction, Artificial Womb and Intelligent Machines: Ethics of 'Embryo Space Colonization'

The theme of human extinction is increasingly at the center of the current debate on moral philos... more The theme of human extinction is increasingly at the center of the current debate on moral philosophy and bioethics. We look at space missions and station construction projects capable of accommodating a large population and at the colonization of other planets with great hope. However, solutions are not excluded either, which for now certainly appear to be much more original. One of the most original projects involves launching a spacecraft containing cryopreserved human embryos, which, once they arrive at destination on another planet, must be thawed and birthed by intelligent machines through artificial wombs (ectogenesis). In this paper, I do not intend to analyze whether the embryo space colonization project is really feasible, but I will limit myself to considering the main moral questions that the embryo space colonization project raises to establish whether, at least prima facie, we can consider it morally acceptable. We will argue that to evaluate the morality of this project we should consider not only the interests and quality of life of the first people who could be born but also the interests of all possible subsequent generations.

As space travel and intentions to colonise other planets are becoming the norm in public debate a... more As space travel and intentions to colonise other planets are becoming the norm in public debate and scholarship, we must also confront the technical and survival challenges that emerge from these hostile environments. This paper aims to evaluate the various arguments proposed to meet the challenges of human space travel and extraterrestrial planetary colonisation. In particular, two primary solutions have been present in the literature as the most straightforward solutions to the rigours of extraterrestrial survival and flourishing: (1) geoengineering, where the environment is modified to become hospitable to its inhabitants, and (2) human (bio)enhancement where the genetic heritage of humans is modified to make them more resilient to the difficulties they may encounter as well as to permit them to thrive in non-terrestrial environments. Both positions have strong arguments supporting them, but they also have some severe philosophical and practical drawbacks when exposed to different circumstances. This paper aims to show that a principled stance where one position is accepted wholesale necessarily comes at the opportunity cost of the other where the other might be better suited, both practically and morally. This paper concludes that case-by-case evaluations of the solutions to space travel and extraterrestrial colonisation are necessary to ensure moral congruency and the survival and flourishing of astronauts now and into the future.
