I have studied History, French Language and Literature, Ancient Greek Culture and Practical Pedagogics at the University of Bergen, Norway. In 2005, I received my Ph.D. from the University of Bergen, Department of History, where I have also taught history and culture, 1990-1998 and in 2004. Later I have been affiliated with the Centre for Women and Gender Research and Unifob Global, University of Bergen. In the period 2011-2013, I was employed as a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow at the Department of Archaeology and History of Art, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. I have been appointed a Lifetime Government Grant Holder (Norwegian, statsstipendiat) by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture, and I have a substantial history of interdisciplinary exchange.
My research combines a historical exploration of gendered religious practices in both ancient and modern Greece with extensive use of ethnographic and anthropological theory and methodology. Since 1983 I have had several periods of fieldwork in the Mediterranean, mainly in Italy and Greece, also conducting research on religious festivals and life-cycle passages since 1987. During fieldwork I am mainly a participating observer but I also do extensive interviews with my informants. In Greece, I have carried out fieldwork in several locations, both in the Northern (Macedonia), Southern (Karpathos), Eastern (Lesbos) and Western (Kephallonia) part, as well as in the southern Peloponnese (Mani), Athens and Aegina. My main field research has been carried out on the island of Tinos, where I am still working.
My research focuses on ancient and modern cultural history and religion in the Mediterranean generally, and especially Greece. In both my research and teaching, I concentrate on interdisciplinary theoretical, and comparative approaches to popular and everyday culture and gender in ancient and contemporary Greece, and, to a lesser extent with Greek diasporas. As illustrated in several of my publications, I relate my ethnographic research foci to broader regional (i.e. Balkan/Mediterranean/Middle Eastern) concerns and theoretical problems, cultural identities included. In addition to regional studies, I have particularly worked with religion and communication both in the modern and ancient context, since the religious festival is an important means of communication.
I currently work on the project, The Dangerous Life: Gender, Pain, Health and Healing in Modern and Ancient Greece, a Comparison, drawing on the same methodology as in my previous books; i.e., using modern in conjunction with ancient sources to shed new light on the ancient world, however, here I focus on healing.

Anthropological and cultural history of Ancient (archaic/classical/late-antiquity), Byzantine and Modern Greek, East-European, Balkan and Mediterranean region and Diasphoras. Research interests encompass theoretical and methodical problems: Comparative studies/Interdisciplinary approaches to religion, society, gender and women’s studies; with particular interest on popular and everyday religion, the ritual year, festivals, life-cycle passages, healing, rituals in connection with water; ideologies and mentalities; cultural continuity/discontinuity.

This book, Competing Ideologies in Greek Culture, Ancient and Modern, follows up the comparative ... more This book, Competing Ideologies in Greek Culture, Ancient and Modern, follows up the comparative approach employed in two earlier monographs of the author on modern and ancient Greek festivals and death rituals, respectively. By drawing on the same methodology; that is, using modern in conjunction with ancient sources, the book explores further into the relationship between official religion and popular belief, as illustrated by the relations between competing ideologies or the relationship between ideology and mentality. The communicative aspect of the religious festival is central and the research goes deeper into Greek culture so that the reader can get to know other sides of Greece than the picture that has dominated the news resulting from the economic crisis with which the county has struggled for several years. The comparative perspective which one encounters in this study is crucial to understanding the European Union because of the continuing eastern expansion and generally in the present global situation. The author’s studies from modern Greece illustrates a society which has its own logics. This is of great immediate interest to contemporary researches and the process of communication in general, in which globalisation and internationalising are two significant topics. It also has relevance for northwestern European ethnocentrism contra extensive parts of the remaining world. This is highly relevant when studying the ancient Greek world; that is, a world very different from the modern northern European one. In the recent debates about Mediterranean studies as a discipline and Mediterranean history as global history, the Greek topic has an important place, particularly so considering that the many parallels between Greek religious rituals and rituals all over the world provide an interesting and important example of the global in the local. In this era of globalisation, then, the unique character of the Greek source material is of ever greater importance worldwide from a comparative approach, not only because it relates to the south-eastern European margin, but also to the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
