Weekend Deals: Fable III, Max Payne, and Deus Ex
Get the first two Max Payne games for $4, plus some excellent deals on King's Bounty.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 14:16
Both Amazon's download service and GamersGate have several King's Bounty games on sale. All things aside, Amazon looks like the way to go as its prices are lower -- the Platinum Edition is just $4.99. Amazon also has its usual discounts on newer PC downloads; NBA 2K12 was added this week and is only $23.99.
With all of the press about Max Payne 3 this week, the first two Max Payne games have been put on sale at both Impulse and Direct2Drive. The bundle of the two games looks like the way to go -- at less than $4 there's a good deal of entertainment to be had from both games, even if the story is a bit crazy.
Steam has slashed the price of Fable III and all of its downloadable content by 66%, bringing the price of the game down to $16.99. Things are quiet on Steam otherwise this week aside from the usual pre-order discounts and a sale on Cogs ($3.40).
PS Vita Hands-On Editor Roundtable
What we like and dislike about Sony's new portable system (and games!) after messing with it (and them!) for a couple hours. Uncharted, Resistance, and more.
By 1UP Staff, 10/07/2011 at 13:18
We recently visited Sony for a Vita press event where their goal wasn't to reveal information, but to allow media to spend more time with many of the same builds that were at last month's Tokyo Game Show. So after we each spent a couple hours of hands-on time -- spread across Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Resistance: Burning Skies, Wipeout 2048, Hot Shots Golf, Gravity Rush, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Reality Fighters, and Little Deviants -- we sat down and had a chat about what we liked and disliked.
Jose Otero: I'm kind of torn on my favorite game from the event. I dug Gravity Rush because it's a fresh concept that utilizes a really cool-looking floating mechanic to maneuver the main character around -- it's an action game, sure, but it also uses mechanics I don't think I've seen before. On the other hand, I liked UMvC3 because it's a known quantity for me and I find that genre really appealing. So I'm stuck between the game I recognize and another that looks cool, but I don't really know enough about.
Bulletstorm's Profanity Took its Polish Developer by Surprise
Upon reading a translated script, People Can Fly's creative director blushed.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 13:10
Warning: The video above is full of NSFW language.
Of course, that should be a given as it showcases footage from Bulletstorm, a game laced with profanity. The video is a collection of many of the swears from the early portion of the game and is just a sample of what you'll hear over the course of the full campaign. Given just how much naughty language there is, one might assume developer People Can Fly was fully aware of how it would come across. Yet it wasn't until fairly late in the game that the Polish developer grasped just how dirty the characters' mouths are.
Mortal Kombat Kollection Was PSN's Top Seller Last Month
Sony will begin revealing the best-selling games on PSN each month.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 12:14
Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection (a bundle of the first three MK games) was the best-selling game on PSN last month, followed by Resident Evil 4, From Dust, Angry Birds, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3. The latter two don't take into account downloads by PlayStation Plus members, who were given free access to both as of September 20.
Final Fantasy VII, perhaps the most popular game in the franchise, was still selling well enough to come in at number ten despite making its debut during E3 2009. It made a splash at the time, quickly selling in excess of 100,000 copies in just two weeks.
Sony is often criticized for not doing enough to promote the downloadable games available on PlayStation Network. For a long time it wasn't uncommon to see a game suddenly pop up on the PlayStation Store with little-to-no warning. By extension, we also are never given any indication of how well games on PSN are selling. Although it isn't providing any numbers, Sony has debuted a monthly sales chart for PSN games beginning with September.
Many Battlefield 3 Issues Being Resolved in Time for Launch, Producer Reiterates it's a Beta
Before getting too worked up about BF3 beta issues, remember it's a beta.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 11:51
"I think there's been a misunderstanding of the term 'beta test,'" Liu told the Guardian. The Operation Metro map featured in the beta may lack vehicles and not show off Conquest mode, two things fans want to see, but again, this is a beta and therefore the goals DICE had in mind might not perfectly align with what gamers want in a demo.
"We ran the alpha tests with a Rush map and we wanted to have some sort of reference so we could compare results -- so we needed to have more-or-less the same map," he explained. "But we do understand the concerns that we didn't show a Conquest map, but we have demoed Caspian Border, and we did run a Conquest map as a limited PC-only test."
Many of those who have been able to try the Battlefield 3 beta since it kicked off late last month have been quick to pass judgment based on its glitches and bugs. With a release coming in less than three weeks, there have been questions about how all of these issues will be worked out by then. (DICE says many of them will be; more on that a minute.) Whether it's because other betas have been released that essentially operated as demos or some other reason, there seems to be a misconception about what a beta is, says producer Patrick Liu.
People Would be "Really Sick" of Resident Evil if it Didn't Branch Out From Survival Horror
A Resident Evil producer isn't worried about the variety of games diluting the franchise.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 10:33
The upcoming 3DS game Resident Evil: Revelations looks to be returning to the series' roots as a survival horror series, but that's not indicative of the direction the entire franchise is moving in. In June we saw the arcade-style shooter The Mercenaries 3D released on 3DS, and Slant Six is currently at work on Operation Raccoon City, a third-person shooter. Recent numbered games (RE4 and 5) have been more action-oriented than the older games in the series. It's a diverse array of games to come out of the same franchise in a fairly short period of time, and that's helped to keep the series from becoming stale, according to Resident Evil producer Masachika Kawata.
"At the core, basically, we want to make the best use of our brand. Resident Evil is an IP, and a franchise, that people have loved for a long time," Kawata told Gamasutra. "It's still very, very popular and we're very, very happy about that, and we want to basically answer all the requests that we get about the series. People want to see a lot of different experiences within the Resident Evil universe, and so we've been fortunate enough to be able to answer those requests with a lot of different experiences, in different forms, in games."

FarmVille Movie Could be Written by Toy Story Scribes
Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen could end up writing the film version of the Facebook farm sim.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 09:54
Speaking with IGN, Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen were asked about what they're working on besides the story for the upcoming Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure game.
"So, yes, we will continue writing movies," the duo said. "We are also working on several new and very exciting opportunities. We're in conversations with Zynga to do something with one of their brands. Can't really say too much on that front yet, but 'Old MacDonald' didn't have a factory, if you get our drift."
There have been some wacky games optioned for movies -- Asteroids, Missile Command -- so the idea of a FarmVille movie shouldn't shock you or anything. That might be your reaction anyway to what was hinted at in a recent interview with two noteworthy Hollywood writers.
Watch UFC PPVs and More on Xbox Live Starting December 1
Predict fight results, watch highlights and press conferences, and stream PPVs from the UFC app.
By Chris Pereira, 10/07/2011 at 09:16
The focal point of the UFC app appears to be pay-per-views. And that should come as no surprise -- PPV revenue is a huge aspect of UFC's revenue and it's in its best interest to make purchasing a PPV as easy and convenient as possible (and watching an unauthorized stream online as unattractive as possible). Both standard definition and high definition (in 720p) versions of PPVs will be available, each at their own respective prices, which will presumably be the same amount you'd pay through your cable provider. Microsoft Points won't be necessary; you'll be able to pay directly with your credit card through Xbox Live, so there's no need to worry about purchasing points and having some left over that may never be used.
The first PPV to be available through the Xbox Live app is UFC 140 on December 10, headlined by Jon "Bones" Jones versus Lyoto Machida for the light heavyweight title and Frank Mir versus Antnio Rodrigo Nogueira.
One of Microsoft's surprises during its E3 press conference this year was the announcement about UFC content coming to Xbox Live. We're now less than two months away from seeing that become a reality, and we have some new details on what will be possible.
VVVVVV 3DS Port Set for Release Later This Year
The indie platformer will be out on the eShop in the next couple months.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 15:55
Excellent 2D indie platformer VVVVVV is headed to the 3DS eShop.
Publisher Nicalis announced today it had reached a deal with designer Terry Cavanagh to bring the unusually-titled game to Nintendo's latest handheld. It was originally released on computers in 2010, making a name for itself with its old-school gameplay and soundtrack, composed by Magnus Plsson. It's a fairly straightforward platformer where you're able to reverse gravity in order to navigate the environment.
Why Didn't PlayStation Vita Games Go Digital-Only?
The time isn't right for that style of system, says Sony.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 15:14
"We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right]," Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Edge. "So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform. Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection. Also, some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers."
Fortunately for those who do wish to abandon the need for physical games, Sony has indicated more than once that all Vita retail games will be available as downloads. (There will be some downloadable games that can't be found at retail, but by and large those should be smaller titles as opposed to something on par with Uncharted.) This is very good news, and it's nice to see Sony learned from the PSP Go. Those who purchased the device had spent a premium to go digital-only and then were unable to play the entire back catalog of PSP games because many titles were not available on the PlayStation Store. To make matters worse, the lack of sales and competitively-priced content (as compared with what could be found at retail) made owning a Go a less than attractive prospect.
Sony may have abandoned the PlayStation Portable's UMD format for Vita, but gamers will still be able to opt for physical copies of games if they so choose. The PSP Go experimented with the idea of a digital-only system in 2009, so why isn't the Vita -- being released in December in Japan and early 2012 elsewhere -- also eschewing physical media? It all comes down to a matter of digital not being right for everyone at this point in time.
Pokedex Update and Side Pocket Billiards in This Week's Nintendo Download Update
There's nothing on par with Super Mario Land 2 or Zelda: Four Swords today.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 13:28
3DS owners can check out the classic Game Boy billiards game Side Pocket for $2.99. It features 16-ball and 9-ball versions to play, and while the animation isn't especially great (what did you expect?), playing well presents you with the opportunity to be called a hustler by a young-looking, monochromatic girl as you jump up and basically fly away. (See it for yourself in the trailer on Nintendo's website.)
The other 3DS exclusive item is an update for Pokedex 3D. You can download it by opening the app, hitting the Settings button (the gear icon) in the upper-right corner, and selecting the Update button.
Following up on a week where the Nintendo Download update brought both The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition for free and Super Mario Land 2 is an unenviable task. Short of some surprising or rare release, this week was going to seem like a disappointment by comparison. Unfortunately, there's nothing like that to be seen today on any of Nintendo's downloadable services.
Ravings Rabbids Getting Their Own Nickelodeon TV Show
There will be 26 half-hour shows produced by Ubisoft.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 12:13
Ubisoft today announced plans to produce a TV series based on the Rabbids franchise. It'll create 78 CG episodes in total, each about seven minutes in length. Nickelodeon will then package three episodes together at a time to create 26 30-minute broadcasts. They'll be aired by Nickelodeon worldwide except in France, Ubisoft's home country; broadcasting company France Tlvisions will air the show there and in other French-speaking countries in Europe.
The Raving Rabbids' connection to Rayman at this point feels nonexistent; since getting their own game in 2006, the crazy, rabbit-like critters have established their own brand. The Rabbids franchise has sold 11 million units to date according to Ubisoft, and whereas Rayman has remained within the realm of videogames, the Rabbids are set to expand to television.
Red Dead Redemption on PC Deemed Unviable
Rockstar Q&A; doesn't give fans hope that RDR will eventually show up on PC.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 11:19
The subject of Red Dead on PC and Rockstar allegedly abandoning the platform came up in an FAQ Rockstar published this week. The answer didn't dive into any specifics, which is what we really want to know, but it did imply RDR on PC wouldn't be viable.
"We hope that with the announcement that L.A. Noire is coming to PC this fall, and the knowledge that our next big game Max Payne 3 will have a PC release (plus that we've released both Grand Theft Auto IV and the Episodes from Liberty City for PC), we can finally put to rest any misconceptions that we've 'abandoned the PC platform,'" the FAQ reads. "We do know that, yes, there is just one title absent from our PC release plans -- that game of course being Red Dead Redemption, and of course we're well aware that some fans have been asking for it.
L.A. Noire was a curious omission on PC given its genre. It launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and it was only after weeks of waiting that Rockstar delivered the official word that a PC version would be coming before the year was up. Each time I've covered a story about Noire's PC port, I've mentioned the absence of another Rockstar hit, Red Dead Redemption, on PC -- it's been out for upwards of 16 months and Rockstar has still given no indication it plans to bring the game to computers.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Announced
A sequel to War for Cybertron is coming from High Moon Studios.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 09:44
The new game, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, was unveiled today by Game Informer. Details are very scant, but after how War for Cybertron turned out, Transformers fans should be quite pleased to hear another original game is in the works after the movie-inspired Dark of the Moon turned out to be a disappointment.
The civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons continues to rage on in Fall of Cybertron; unfortunately for those eager to know what will happen, we only have that and the name to go on at this point as far as story details go. Well, that and an image of Optimus Prime lifting up Bumblebee, who seems to be dead (or close to it).
A sequel to last year's surprisingly good Transformers: War for Cybertron is in development at High Moon Studios.
3DS Goes White in Japan and Gets a Monster Hunter Bundle
A fifth 3DS color will soon be available in Japan.
By Chris Pereira, 10/06/2011 at 09:01
Following the pink system's launch on October 20, a white 3DS (pictured below) is set to become available in Japan on November 3. That will bring the total number of 3DS colors up to five in Japan -- aqua, black, and red being the others, those three being the only available options in the United States. (Although we did recently get a pink DSi XL in the U.S.!)
What should be an even hotter item in Japan is a Monster Hunter system bundle. It includes the Monster Hunter 3G game itself and a specially-designed white 3DS. The system has the Monster Hunter 3G name and some artwork on the outside of the system's top screen in red. The bundle's price is set at 20,800 yen (about $272) and is set for release on December 10, the same day as the standalone game.
In addition to the launch of a pink 3DS later this month, Japan will soon after get yet another brand-new color and a special edition Monster Hunter bundle.
