Effective September 12, the suggested retail price of the Nintendo DSi will be be chopped from $169.99 to $149.99, and the recently released DSi XL will drop from $189.99 to $169.99. The DS Lite model will remain at $129.99.
"We know shoppers want to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend," Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vp of sales and marketing, said in a statement. "Our new Nintendo DSi prices make it easier than ever for consumers to access the tremendous variety of games, applications and social tools on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems."
In addition to the price drop announcement, Nintendo also revealed the release date for one of its most highly anticipated DS titles, RPG Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.
Gamers from the days of the Game Boy Advance will remember the original Golden Sun (2001), and its sequel, The Lost Age (2003), were among the highest rated RPGs ever -- handheld or console. Seven years after the sequel, the third game in the series is finally set to ship on November 29.
Sharkey says: Just before Nintendo was prepared to launch the DSi XL in the States, word of the 3DS leaked, and the company was forced into making an official announcement. That basically crushed any hope the XL had at U.S. retail. The $190 price tag didn't help, and I'm not sure the $20 savings will do much good. The 3DS is coming, and its clear by the huge drop in sales gamers are waiting for it.
