    Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

    Digital Realty Trust completes 365 Main acquisition. Digital Realty Trust (DLR) announced it has completed the acquisition of a five-property data center portfolio located in California, Arizona and Virginia, referred to as the Rockwood Capital/365 Main Portfolio.  The 919,000 square foot, $725 million portfolio, including 365 Main in San Francisco was announced June 2, 2010. “We are very pleased to announce the completion of this acquisition, which further demonstrates our ability to negotiate and close complex transactions that result in attractive risk-adjusted returns for our shareholders,” commented Michael F. Foust, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Realty Trust. “We believe that the addition of these high quality facilities to our existing portfolio along with many new customer relationships will continue to add value to the Company over the long term.”

    Interxion partners with ControlCircle. Interxion announced that it has partnered with ControlCircle, a global provider of design, implementation and outsourced managed services of complex IT infrastructures.  With customers including large online businesses and blue-chip companies the agreement will allow ControlCircle to deliver enhanced colocation data center packages where security, infrastructure and availability are critical to their business. Damian Milkins, CEO at ControlCircle, said: “Interxion’s proximity to the London and Paris markets and their dedicated capital markets infrastructure will help us give our customers a competitive edge.”

    Layered Tech selected by KANA Software. Layered Technologies announced that it will provide KANA Software, Inc., with virtual private data centers (VPDCs), managed services and disaster recovery solutions to support KANA’s enterprise customers worldwide. “It was essential that we find an infrastructure provider capable of supporting KANA’s growth on both sides of the Atlantic, while providing the cloud infrastructure required to meet our customers’ highest security and disaster recovery requirements. We chose Layered Tech because they are the only provider with both the expertise and internationally based data centers needed to provide our clients with customer service applications on highly scalable and reliable infrastructure,” said Stuart Mills, vice president of International Global Consulting at KANA.The agreement will permit ControlCircle to deliver enhanced colocation data centre packages to customers where security, infrastructure and availability are critical to their business.

  • Roundup: Fortress, Interxion, Equinix, Global Switch

    Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

    Fortress Books $44 million in New Business. Fortress International Group (FIGI) announced that it has closed approximately $44 million in new contracts for the six months ended June 30, 2010, an increase of nearly 300 percent compared with $15 million in new contracts for the comparable period in 2009.  The $44 million can be divided by $12.4 million for technology consulting, $25.1 million for construction management and $6.2 million for facility management. “The sharp increase in our bookings is a strong indication of the recovering data center market, our solid repeat business and the strength of our business model as a full service provider,” said Thomas P. Rosato, Fortress’ Chief Executive Officer. “In addition to new contracts, we are attracting considerable repeat business from premier customers such as Power Loft, SAIC, Home Depot, US Army Corps of Engineers, as well as our three fortune 500 IT based customers and the NIH.”

    Interxion offers BATS Europe. Interxion announced that it offers low-latency access to BATS Europe, the fast-growing European Mulilateral Trading Facility (MTF).  With BATS Euorpe’s system latency averaging 350 microseconds, customers at Interxion’s London data center enjoy extremely low round-trip latency.  “With a growing pool of liquidity on our integrated and dark order books, as well as our pan-European smart order routing service, available via Interxion, we encourage Interxion customers to subscribe to BATS Europe quickly to benefit from our high-performance, low-latency trading platform,” said Paul O’Donnell, COO of BATS Europe.

    Transaction Network Services expands with Equinix.  Equinix (EQIX) announced that Transaction Network Services (TNS) Secure Trading Extranet is now offering low-latency connectivity through Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Australia and Singapore. “Supported by TNS’ connectivity, our facilities in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore become an even stronger platform for both new and current financial participants to build in and use for accessing Asia-Pacific markets,” said John Knuff, general manager, Equinix Financial Services. This announcement follow TNS deployments in Chicago, New York, London and Frankfurt.

    Global Switch selected by Department of Defence. The Australian reports that Global Switch has beat out Polaris for a 10 year lease with The Department of Defence to kick start a decade-long, $417 million reform project.  In late March Global Switch announced that the planning of a new $200 million data center development in Sydney that would be adjacent to an existing facility which is the largest data center of its kind in the southern hemisphere.  The Department of Defence plans to move into the Global Switch data center by March 2010, when its current lease expires.  “Global Switch has been selected for providing the best value for money for the data centre facilities required by Defence for its future primary data centre,” said Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support Mike Kelly. “The lease of the new Global Switch data centre facility represents a significant milestone in ensuring that Defence has the capability to support its future ICT requirements with state-of-the-art data centre infrastructure.”

  • Roundup: Interxion, Equinix, Verio

    Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

    Interxion selected by SIX Swiss Exchange. Interxion announced that SIX Swiss Exchange, the primary Swiss securities exchange, will offer proximity services to market participants from Interxion’s Zurich data center.  With their customer base connecting to the exchange from remote trading locations, SIX Swiss Exchange will use the Zurich data center to offer low latency proximity services to improve trading performance without increasing risk.  “We are seeing strong demand for access to SIX Swiss Exchange, and this partnership complements our existing financial services hosting business,” said Eddy Van den Broech, Interxion Switzerland’s Managing Director.

    Equinix selected by Transaction Network Services. Equinix (EQIX) announced that Transaction Network Services’ (TNS) Secure Trading Extranet is now offering low-latency connectivity through Equinix’s International Business Exchange data centers in Australia and Singapore.  Building their position as a key connectivity provider for Equinix these TNS deployments follow announcements for Chicago, New York, London and Frankfurt. “The presence of a robust electronic trading ecosystem within Equinix will allow us to increase our connectivity and build on our growing client base,” said Alan Schwartz, President for TNS’ Financial Services Division. “We believe our joint clients will greatly benefit from this new low latency network connectivity, enabling them to capitalize on the improved speed and reliability that is key to today’s electronic trading.”

    Verio European Expansion.  Online business solution provider Verio announced the expansion of its global operations with the opening of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Verio Europe.  Verio Europe consists of the former SMB division of NTT Europe Online. Headquartered in Germany, Verio Europe will offer services ranging from domain registration to shared and virtual hosting, and online backup services. “We continue to lead the market with our global OEM and partner efforts and the establishment of Verio Europe will further help us to meet the growing demand for our services, while at the same time, strengthening our overall position as the leader in delivering online solutions to SMBs worldwide,” said Kiyoshi Maeda, President and CEO of Verio.

    Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

    Equinix Selected by IPC.  Equinix (EQIX) announced that financial trading communications provider IPC has extended its core networking infrastructure to additional Equinix International Business Exchange data centers located throughout the Asia-Pacific region. IPC is also in Equinix facilities across North America and Canada.  The secure network offered by IPC interconnects more than 200 cities across six continents.  “IPC’s decision to select Equinix’s premier data center services in Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo is another vote of confidence for Equinix across the Asia-Pacific region,” said David Wilkinson, senior director, Business Development of Equinix in Asia-Pacific. “Our established ecosystems of financial communities in our IBX data centers present an immediate market opportunity to IPC, hence facilitating its penetration into the regional markets.”

    Interxion selected by AlgoSpan and ALGO Technologies. European data center provider Interxion announced an agreement with AlgoSpan and ALGO Technologies, to offer low latency connectivity and market data services from Interxion’s City of London data center with immediate effect.  With an estimated one-way latency of below 270 microseconds AlgoSpan will be the first provider to create an ultra-fast connection between the London and Slough facilities.  “Interxion’s extensive customer base, combined with our speed of connectivity and quality of market data, positions us well to help the latency sensitive trading community gain ultra-fast connectivity to trading venues and market data feeds,” said Hirander Misra, CEO of ALGO Technologies and co-founding Director of AlgoSpan.

    Terremark launches Latin America Enterprise cloud. Terremark (TMRK) announced the initial deployment of its Enterprise Cloud in Latin America. Leveraging the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) Terremark will provide customers scalable cloud-based resources from its Network Access Point (NAP) in Sao Paolo Brazil.  “By purchasing a dedicated resource pool of processing, memory and storage, the Enterprise Cloud offers our customers more flexibility and agility over the traditional server-based model, allowing for a precise and dynamic allocation of computing resources as needed,” said Rodolfo Garia, President of Terremark’s Latin American Business Unit. The Terremark enterprise cloud provides a flexible and scalable platform for companies to purchase dedicated resource pools of processing, memory and storage.

    Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

    Gartner says  power, cooling and space to increase rapidly. Gartner reported Thursday that a significant increase in server sales during the next two years will lead to a further acceleration of data center power, cooling and space problems.  Gartner argues that the effects of new deployments must be quantified and to take action without delay.  To help battle the space, power and cooling issues Gartner identifies a number of potential actions to take: quantify the problem, use monitoring tools, accelerate consolidation and virutalization projects, and access the benefits of delaying new server purchases.

    SGI expands storage product line. SGI announced a global initiative with LSI corporation to expand its SGI InfiniteStorage products with compelling new configurations power by LSI.  “SGI is bringing to market a powerful range of differentiated LSI storage solutions that are important for many clients,” said John Fliss, president and CEO, Arcscale. “It is essential to have performance solutions delivered in a format that is completely interoperable in a heterogeneous compute environment.” New storage solutions range from entry-level and mid-range enterprise RAID-based storage to iSCSI, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand and SAS.  The SGI Global Channel Network will have all information regarding SGI and LSI products, enabling partners to have what they need in order to be success.

    Interxion selected by Trunk Networks. European colocation provider Interxion announced an agreement with Trunk Networks, a hosted-solutions provider, to deliver equipment housing and connectivity services in Interxion’s London City data center. Low latency and connectivity options are key to Trunk Network’s business and this drove them to selecting Interxion’s facility, connecting to 18 leading European Internet Exchanges and over 350 carriers and network service providers across Europe. “A choice of 36 carriers means we can get the best deal, with the best rates of bandwidth and critically the best resilience,” said Drew Marshall, Director at Trunk Networks. “Overall the experience of working with Interxion has been very good from day one. They were the only data centre to really understand our needs and to make a real effort to meet them.”

  • Interxion Plans IPO on U.S. Markets

    European colocation and data center specialist Interxion has filed plans for an initial public offering with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said Monday. The company filed its paperwork “on a confidential basis,” meaning the details are not public.

    Interxion has been the focus of IPO rumors for several years. It is the third data center company to announce IPO plans this year, following the lead of interconnection specialist Telx Group and Malaysia’s CSF Group. The Interxion offering is expected to take place in the second half of 2010, while the number of shares to be sold and the amount to be raised hasn’t been determined.

    26 Data Centers in 11 Countries
    Interxion is based in Amsterdam and operates 26 carrier-neutral data centers in 13 cities and 11 European countries. The company offers colocation, wholesale data center services and managed hosting, giving customers a broad set of choices. Its competitors include Telecity and Equinix (IXEurope) on the colocation front and Digital Realty Trust, Global Switch and e-Shelter in the wholesale space.

  • Interxion Raises $278 Million

    European data center specialist Interxion has raised €200 million (about $278 million U.S.) through a sale of notes, the company said Tuesday. The senior secured notes will be guaranteed by its wholly-owned subsidiaries, and the company plans to use the funds to “repay existing indebtedness and for general corporate purposes.”

    Interxion didn’t indicate whether the funding would support additional data center space. But the company has been actively expanding its data center footprint over the past two years, adding space in Zurich, Paris, Frankfurt and Dublin in 2009.

  • Interxion Opens Sixth Paris Data Center

    Paris is a hot market for Interxion, which said today that its sixth Paris data centre, at Ivry-sur-Seine, is now operational. What’s more, the company said the “majority” the data centre’s 1,400 square meters (15,000 square feet) of equipment space has been pre-sold. The expansion gives Interxion 290,000 square feet of data center space across its six facilities in Paris, with a total European footprint of 25 data centres in 11 countries.

    The PAR6 center was designed with an energy-efficient modular architecture, with free cooling, 2N redundancy for UPS power and N+1 for cooling, as well as advanced alarm and monitoring systems. The facility has a 4MVA redundant grid connection, and direct access to the PaNAP, FreeIX, PARIX and SFINX Internet exchanges.

    “The successful completion of PAR6 extends the diversity of locations and facilities we can offer in the city still further,” said Fabrice Coquio, Managing Director Interxion France. “It means that Interxion can offer a large range of tailored colocation solutions to customers, leveraging our unparalleled footprint and experience to satisfy a fast-growing market.”
