Yesterday on “The Tyra Show,” Tyra talked to the interracial couple who was denied a marriage license by a Louisiana justice of the peace last year. Beth Humphrey, who is white, described how she called about a license for her and Terence McKay, who is black, and the woman she spoke to on the phone asked, “Is this an interracial marriage?” Then they were informed this justice only marries couples of the same race. (The justice, Keith Bardwell, said he was “not a racist” but was only concerned for “the children” — because duh, everyone knows you can’t make interracial babies without getting married first.)

• The United States is the 28th best place in the world for mothers and their children, according to Save The Children’s annual report, given our inconsistencies on maternity leave, restrictions on birth control, and maternal mortality rate. Norway, where maternity leave is mandated and birth control is easy to access, clocks in at number one on the Mothers Index, followed by Australia, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The worst offenders on the Mothers Index include Afghanistan, Yemen and Sudan. [USA Today]
• Sunshine State News video caught Florida State Senator Mike Bennett looking at pornographic photos during a debate on an abortion bill. Sen. Bennett said he was “bored as they were debating the abortion bill,” but said he “clicked away from it right away.” I’m sorry, but a white male politician looking at porn while abortion rights are being debated is just the biggest cliche ever. • Paris has decided to lift a 1799 rule that forbade women from wearing “trousers” and made any woman who wished to “dress like a man” seek permission from the city’s police station. The French have tried to repeal the bill numerous times, to no avail, but recently 10 MPs submitted a draft bill to remove the no-women-in-pants law entirely. [Telegraph UK]

Look, I watch “The Hills.” I’m not ashamed, but I’m not proud either. I’m especially not proud, now that the Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt subplot has taken a decidedly new agey and potentially abusive turn. Spencer is definitely a complete attention whore—the only one who could compete with him is his wife—and he’s always given me the skeeves; but on last night’s episode—and the preview for next week—it’s clear that Spencer is either losing his mind and treading into potentially scary and abusive territory or just pretending to for the show.

Here are a few things I don’t find to be “sexy” activities for a couple. 1) Taking baths together (showers are fine), 2) feeding each other, and 3) singing and dancing a musical number together while painfully attempting to look aroused and seductive. Unfortunately for those in attendance at the 5th Annual “A Fine Romance” benefit gala on Saturday, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes do find the latter sexy, performing “Whatever Lola Wants” from Damn Yankees. There are two types of people in the world: those who wrote off Juicy around the same time they got rid of their Uggs, and those who look like they’re vying for a spot on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” or “Jersey Shore.” Or at least, that’s what we thought. The maker of the iconic velour tracksuit has steered itself in a new and appealing direction—you may have heard that they recently hired Erin Fetherston to design and consult for the brand—and you can already see some fresh style through the new jewelry offerings. Some of these pieces seem to take inspiration from Dior’s floral cluster designs, which is a good thing because we can’t afford Dior anyhow. As for JC, we’re loving the vintage-looking enameled flowers found on showy cocktail rings and delicate chains. Some other highlights include interwoven fabric and chain necklaces, messy cluster jewelry à la Tom Binns, and delicate hoop earrings draped with trinkets.
