FFTA2 is far from an easy game, but the challenge does not necessarily lie in that one final boss, or that one hidden dungeon. Instead, you are aiming to perfect your team, their skills, their chemistry, and your ability as a commander. This is fairly standard for those who have dived into the TRPG world before, but for new players it might be a bit overwhelming.
As you know, we at IGN are committed to quality guides. For maximum enjoyment of the game, it would do you a disservice if we just simply said how to get from point A to point B. Oh, don't worry, we'll have a typical walkthrough, even with plot summary and analysis. But more importantly than that, we have a section in this guide all about team dynamics and theories, how job classes relate and complement each other, and what combinations should probably be avoided. In other words, this is almost two guides in one: one part for those who want a straight walkthrough, and one who just wants to know how the systems tie together for a bit of advice on their quests.

Below is a list of unlockable character classes, which are listed on the left. To the right of each is the name of the mission you must complete in order for that particular class to become unlocked.
To unlock the Espers listed on the left, complete the corresponding mission listed on the right.
In order to recruit Vaan and Penelo to your party (both from Final Fantasy XII), try the following. Before going on a quest titled The Ritual, head to Flougis. An event bubble should appear. Thereafter, another will pop up. Head to both. If done properly, Vaan and Penelo will thereafter be unlocked for use in your party.
There’s a special skill known as Libra, which has a different use in this game than most other Final Fantasy titles it appears in (it reveals traps on the field of battle as opposed to the statistics of a targeted enemy). To acquire it, start up FFTA2 with a copy of the original Final Fantasy Tactics Advance in the GBA port on your DS.
During the sequence with Luso’s summer journal, you can answer three questions in the following order to unlock different clan abilities from the get-go. The first answer is represented by A, the second by B, and the third by C.
To recruit the character Frimelda, complete the following chain of missions: Under the Weather, A Chill in the Night, Show of Strength, Hunted, and Memories Forged.
Before each battle, you’ll get to choose with advantage you want to give your crew (so long as you don’t break the judge’s rules for that battle). You should always, always choose an experience boost over any other statistical advantage. You’ll rarely (if ever) run into a battle where you should be challenged to the point that you’ll need a mild speed or strength boost, for instance, but experience is always a hot commodity that should be gathered when and where you can. Giving yourself an experience boost during each battle will let your characters level up quicker, and ultimately this will lead to an even stronger party that will never need statistical advantages in battle. Continue to repeat this process and you’ll be working with a really strong crew before long.
Want infinite loot but don't want to take the time to fight a billion quests? If you're late in the game, you can get all the loot you want in a single battle with the right circumstances. Enter any battle (preferably a random battle, as the laws tend to be a little less constraining), and be sure to have Vaan and any Seeq Ranger in your party. For best results, you'll want to add a Time Mage, as well as any class that is good at holding enemies in place, such as an Animist with Sheep Count or a Juggler with Ring Toss.
Although it's not strictly necessary, you may want to fight the battle as usual until you get to one enemy remaining. This is just for simplicity, and to keep battlefield control. Keep the enemy busy but don't kil him; use Stop, Sleep, and so forth to keep him out of harm's way. Then, have your Ranger make any kind of trap near Vaan, and have Vaan use the Salvage ability. Salvage, you see, disarms the trap an gives you a random piece of high level loot as a result. The Ranger can make unlimited traps for free, and Vaan can use his Salvage ability for free as many times as he wants too. With a Time Mage giving Haste to both guys, you could sit there and farm loot quickly all day! Just be sure to save afterwards!
If, late in the game, you accept the mission to catch the Aerodome Prankster, you’ll see Vaan from Final Fantasy XII fighting in that battle as well. If you’re victorious, Penelo (also from Final Fantasy XII) will come out and talk to you.
