10 Days of Hawk: The Competition: Skate 15:32 PST | slateman | Print News | Category: Game NewsSo as the countdown continues, we're reminded there's a new kid on the block who is stirring things up quite a bit. Oh yeah, the aptly titled skate. It's been out for some time now, but I've only just gotten to writing a brief Skate Review. I don't give scores in my reviews but it's a very good game. For those wondering it's unlike Hawk in every way, and I truly believe both can co-exist harmoniously! Whether our wallets can support that is a different story entirely! Hey, who knows, they might learn something from one another!
In any event, I've tossed that review up and probably won't talk much about it otherwise, as the hype here should be for Hawk. However, as many of us own more than one (four? eight?) Hawk games, we're all skaters at heart, even if we all haven't busted our ankles (every October it hurts!) Therefore, I found it relevant to share my thoughts on the title. And with that, my banter shall cease. More tomorrow?
While short, it does reveal a few new things. First off, it is being developed by Vicarious Visions, perhaps I should have known that. The game follows THAS and ditches the THDJ formula entirely, as expected. There are 7 skate parks and the game features all the typical goals with the classic mode included as well. There will be am/pro/sick goals to challenge even us veterans. Finally, the visual style receives an overhaul again, with a more realistic angle on things.
I'll admit that I enjoyed THDJ more than THAS on the DS. I thought the latter played rather slowly, and I liked the different style of game that THDJ presented (much better than the Wii/PS2 game!) However, I've always liked the games Vicarious Visions has made so this year should be no exception. Check the preview for more details and a handful of snapshots.
Tony Hawk's Proving Ground ships in the U.S. on the 15th, which means most of us should have the game in our filthy hands on the 16th, ten days from now.
If you're late to the game, here's what we have so far:
Xbox360 & PS3 version developed by Neversoft. Check out our previews & demo reviews. Speaking of, you can grab the demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace or through the PS Network for free. The former weighs in at a gig, the latter a gig and a half.
The PS2 and Wii get their own title developed by Page 44 Studios. There has been absolutely nothing announced or shown on this. Expect the usual, a watered-down copy of the next-gen original. The level design will be similar, as will the objectives, but the graphics will look much like THP8 on the PS2, and the engine will probably be the same. Don't expect anything groundbreaking.
The Nintendo DS game is coming out simultaneously. With THAS it was similar to the console versions, so expect a merging of the style from THDJ and the gameplay from THAS. I've quite liked the handheld versions, so this should be a good entry as well.
Until then, we'll be posting frequently with whatever else we know. For those who simply can't wait, go grab the strategy guide here! It's $20 (wow) and will surely give everything away before you even get your hands on the game! Fun!

Got any suggestions? 19:11 PST | slateman | Print News | Category: Site NewsA follow-up to my post below. Does anyone have any suggestions for a capture device? My search has gone on for a while and I don't really want to dish out $500. All I really need is S-video in, I don't care care about software, just a good capture device. I saw another Plextor for $170, but I'm hesitant after that junker. If I can't go external, I could use one of my older machines. Something AGP? Anyone? Please let me know. Thanks!
Horrible Capture Device 18:59 PST | slateman | Print News | Category: Site NewsI know, you get what you pay for. Rather than rebuild my old machine w/ my ATI All-In-Wonder Pro 128, I opted for a cheap piece of garbage. I wanted an external device so I could use my laptop and not have to lug my consoles downstairs/computers upstairs. In any event, here is my first Xbox360 / PS3 comparison of the THPG demo. Don't tell me that you're not excited by the visual comparison provided here. Don't even try, b/c this is high quality equipment.
Xbox360
PS3
Not sure why the 360 got that strange little guy on their version, not like you can make anything else out of these shoddy excuses for a snapshot. Oh well. My wife won't be happy about having a computer rigged up in the living room. :)

That sucks so badly. If you mailed me and wanted something, let me know, b/c I simply don't have your message. Whoever sent me a copy of Skate from EA, I'll get to the review shortly, and I'd thank you, but I lost your email too. Oh this sucks.
Anyways, I'm sorry folks. I'm going to test my capture device soon, see if I can get some good PS3/Xbox360 comparisons of THPG.

I got the Xbox360 version of the demo. Someone told me I needed Xbox Live Gold for that. Well, I don't. So, some minor differences exist. The first start screen (when it tells you what you need to do), there is a picture of a guy on the 360 game, but not on the PS3. Odd. In any event, the PS3 controller is still my favorite. I don't like the shoulders on the Xbox360. And for some reason the PS3 game is a 1.5Gb download while the 360 is 1.04Gb. PS3 also has the motion controls which is cool for balancing, IMO, but read my preview for all that. On the other hand, the Xbox360 controller is indeed comfortable and the rumble feels great. It just feels like something is missing on the PS3. Also, as I mentioned as rumor, the PS3 game doesn't look as good as the Xbox game. Simply put. Otherwise they're pretty much identical and both are rather fun.
If you care/didn't know, Right, Down + grab does The 900, a special move and also Up, Down + Grind does a special manual move, One Footed Manual Grab of some kind. I've since forgotten.
I've also posted the THPG Hidden Combo list for the demo/full game. There are a few things in here that aren't listed in the move listing. Check that out.
More to come, of course! The game ships in just 3 weeks!

A fortnight without interwebs 12:11 PST | Metal_Dom | Print News | Category: Site NewsSummer is over and tomorrow I'm shipping out back to uni and moving in to a new home. As such internet won't be a luxary I'll have for about 2 weeks. I'll still be checking my email on campus from time to time so feel free to contact me if you want to. So you're left in the very capable hands of slateman whilst I'm on the dark side of the moon. See you on the other side!

THPG PS3 Demo Review 9:26 PST | slateman | Print News | Category: Game NewsI've been so busy lately and I wish I could've gotten to this earlier. Anyways, I had plenty of time to sit w/ the demo and was pleased with a lot of it. There are some pretty cool features and additions. I am happy with the speed. Check out the options menu for some additional stuff, Dom missed that, I believe. Anyways, why read about what I wrote about? Why not just read the demo review here and be done with it?

New Poll + Glitches 14:25 PST | Metal_Dom | Print News | Category: Game News - Site NewsFor those who may be confused I've changed the poll at the right hand side of this page because it excluded the PS3 demo. Now you can express your opinions on either demo of THPG which are both out now.
Also if glitching is your thing and like me you admire the BGOAT clan, check out the latest finds in the demos here.
Now I'm going to get back to the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta which is seriously kicking posterior. If there's two things FPS can learn from this game it's Kill cams and Last Stands. See who the hell fragged you, then shoot the n00b just before you die! Also picked up Stranglehold today and if it lives up to the demo then it's going to be a lot of fun.

*Snore* 19:46 PST | slateman | Print News | Category: Site NewsMy PS3 has decided to download everything else in my queue, and THPG is stuck at 1.4Gb, or 93%. It's a shade better than the 92% which it was stuck on for quite a while. So, however long ago when I posted my news, you can do the math, it's just going slowly. In the meantime it prioritized whatever demos and movies I grabbed. You know, the stuff I didn't care about!
So, as I yawn here and have another long day ahead, it's likely I won't get to THPG tonight. Lucky that a student of mine lent me Gears Of War. Yeah, I'm late to the game, but whatever. Given this pace, I should be able to get a substantial way through it before I get my 10 minutes with Proving Ground!
As I get home, I'm psyched, but...Oh no! there's a new firmware. Plug the USB cable in (annoying), download the update and install. 1.92 had problems w/ disconnects, so that'll be a nice fix.
Start downloading the 1.5Gb demo. Brought my kids to the open house and met their teachers. Get home and only at 21%. Why? Oh yeah, network disconnect! Well, the download begins again and I'm waiting to get it. For those of you who have been interested, you can grab it. In the shape I'm in, I fear I won't even touch it tonight. However, my high school teaching job is out for 3 weeks, so that gives me some spare time. I'll report back in once I have the demo!
It's [THPG] fun for people who skate and people who don't skate. We always walk that line--it's a game, but it's about skating. We want to make sure that the skating audience and skate culture is adhered to, but also is has to be a lot of fun.

THPG XBL Demo released + our review 3:44 PST | Metal_Dom | Print News | Category: Game NewsFinally and without a lengthy delay the big wigs at Microsoft let THPG on the Marketplace for download! The demo is about 1.04GB and came out during the early hours in the States, about 05:00 EST (10:00 GMT). I've put up a new poll on the right side of this page so everyone can voice their opinions on the demo. You can see the results of the previous SKATE poll here.
So after playing the game solidly for 6 hours I can now post my THPG Xbox 360 Demo Review. In it you'll find a full review of every aspect of the game, my impressions and a walkthrough of the goals.
