Chat Transcript - Nov 5, 1997

05:03:13PM Jeff McNeal:Good evening. Will DTS DVD's also include a DD 5.1 mix so I can choose for myself?

05:03:38PM DTS Speaker:Each content provider will make that decision on a title by title basis.

05:04:25PM stkim:I've heard that you cannot really tell the difference between DTS and DD on a home theater system unless you have a VERY high end system. Is this true?

05:05:10PM DTS Speaker:We believe that you can tell a substantial difference on a wide range of systems. We suggest you check it out yourself.

05:06:37PM ranger:Why can't current generation DVD players send raw DTS data stream out of the digital ports for external decoding?

05:07:44PM DTS Speaker:The authoring software for implementing a DTS bit stream onto a DVD was not finalized until after many current generation DVD players were already designed.

05:08:24PM lndblr:When will the first DTS DVD be released?

05:09:00PM DTS Speaker:DTS expects the first DTS version DVDs to be available beginning the first quarter of 1998.

05:09:35PM AVB:Any plans for upgrades to current DVD owners?

05:09:50PM DTS Speaker:Each manufacturer will have to make that decision independently.

05:10:49PM syow13:About the DTS/DVD spec - any news on Sony support? I hear that they are not supporting it - do you think this hamper DTS acceptance (Sony 7000 is considered the reference standard!)

05:12:07PM DTS Speaker:We are not at liberty to discuss our current working relationship with Sony or other manufacturers with whom we are operating under nondisclosure; however, we are confident that our momentum will result in wide acceptance.

05:13:05PM richichi:What dvd players will be coming out in march????

05:13:52PM DTS Speaker:At the CES Show in January, there will be a number of exciting announcements. We suggest you attend, check our website.

05:15:49PM Jeff McNeal:I'm satisfied with Dolby Digital. Why should I spend hundreds, if not thousands more for DTS? Diminishing returns, you know?

05:20:36PM DTS Speaker:Some people are satisfied with Pro Logic, some people are satisfied with AC3. Those that want the best will purchase DTS. The entry price of DTS has been expensive, but we can assure you that DTS products will hit similar price points as AC3 and they will be shown at Winter CES. Further, there are other reasons to buy DTS, including 20 bit 6 channel music CDs.

05:21:26PM Jeff McNeal:Other than the sound improvements you claim, can you give me one good reason to invest $$ in DTS?

05:21:49PM DTS Speaker:The most incredible music you have ever heard in your life -- multichannel audio.

05:22:06PM billhunt:What is your stance toward the DVD-incompatable Divx standard?

05:22:38PM DTS Speaker:We believe we can provide high-quality audio for any format.

05:24:01PM ranger:How long does your company expect to continue to support DTS LD's?

05:24:13PM DTS Speaker:As long there is a laserdisc market.

05:24:42PM ccouper: Are you going to answer the questions about why dts cannot just send the raw bitstream out the digital links?

05:25:37PM DTS Speaker:Once again, the authoring software for implementing a DTS bit stream onto a DVD was not finalized until after many of the current DVD players were already designed.

05:25:45PM nedron:On another front, can we expect any acceleration in the number of DTS audio CD's? Will this be discussed at CES?

05:26:35PM DTS Speaker:Absolutely, the response to DTS CDs from the music industry has been overwhelming and we are dedicating a significant part of our resources to ensuring an accelerated flow of quality multichannel music in the marketplace.

05:26:48PM andrew:DTS is a much better sound system, but it doesn't have enough software releases to support its popularity. I want more...more DTS software and at a competitive price to DD software!!!!!

05:27:07PM DTS Speaker:We are, too. And we are dedicated to that happening.

05:29:03PM db:DTS Speaker, why haven't you released your own decoder preamp for market?

05:30:05PM DTS Speaker:DTS licenses a technology which enables providers of music and movies in the highest quality format. This technology is licensed to hardware manufacturers who are our customers and we do not intend to compete with them .

05:30:23PM bgsherris:Gentlemen, I have have had in my possession a DVD containing MCA/Universal clips that DOES play on current DVD players, so please tell me why this encoding cannot be used for future DVD production?

05:33:34PM DTS Speaker:The disc you are making reference to was created for demonstration purposes only to allow DTS to demonstrate the high audio quality that DTS could bring to the DVD platform. As the authoring software was not in place at that time, DTS utilized the linear PCM attribute.

05:34:16PM radco69:now that lexicon has dts will thare be more software i hope

05:34:53PM DTS Speaker:Yes, we believe it will and every time another manufacturer licenses DTS, it has a positive effect on the software availability.

05:36:38PM ranger:Why can't the linear PCM that you mentioned continue to be used?

05:37:24PM DTS Speaker:Because it is inconsistent with DVD specifications.

05:38:06PM bdg1011:I thought that all DVD's regardless of alternate soundtracks (eg. DTS) must carry at minimum some kind of Dolby digital track. Is this true?

05:39:20PM DTS Speaker:It is our understanding that in North America, the specifications require either AC3 or linear PCM. DTS is also available as an option in the specifications.

05:40:49PM leov:Will the DTS format allow for a DVD to also contain an AC3 track?

05:41:12PM DTS Speaker:As we answered this questions earlier, this will be the decision of each individual content supplier.

05:42:11PM Jeff McNeal:IMHO, in order for DTS to survive, the choice should be given to the consumer if the technology allows it.

05:42:49PM DTS Speaker:We absolutely agree.

05:43:25PM radco69:Does WSRGary have stock in DTS

05:43:48PM DTS Speaker:No!!!! Nor is he on the payroll. We sincerely appreciate his support.

05:45:36PM db:How will a DD and a DTS decoder in the same system decide which one will be heard?

05:45:58PM DTS Speaker:Is your question regarding a DVD player or an outboard decoder?

05:47:10PM centerstage:Are DTS movies mixed different than DTS CDs regarding lower frequencies?

05:48:02PM DTS Speaker:DTS does not mix or remix movie soundtracks or music CDs. We make transparent replicas of the final approved product provided to us by the content owner.

05:49:04PM nedron:Do the lack of difinitive info from DTS re: its DVD implementation, the anti-DTS forces in alt.video.dvd are having a field day spreading F.U.D. Could DTS prepare a FAQ to explain the DTS DVD implementation so we can correct these posts?

05:49:49PM DTS Speaker:Yes, we are working on it as we speak. The website is undergoing major changes that will address issues concerning DVD and the DTS format.

05:50:34PM AVB:Do you plan to put DTS on Divx if that anti-comsumer format is ever really produced?

05:51:34PM DTS Speaker:We believe that DTS provides the highest quality audio for any delivery format.

05:56:04PM Audiofreak:Will you publically oppose Divx since it is the most hated format ever conceived?

05:57:07PM DTS Speaker:It is not up to DTS to determine if DIVX or any other format should be brought to market. That is a decision that rests with the motion picture studios who provide content for delivery format.

06:10:54PM leov:What about DVD players. Will we need new generation players to support DTS?

06:12:49PM DTS Speaker:DTS compatible players will appear in the first quarter of 1998, at the same time as DTS discs. There is no information available at this time that would confirm the ability to upgrade existing players.

06:14:08PM JeffT:Doesn't DTS add another layer of confusion to the fledgling DVD format? I know it's good stuff, but the average consumer will only see another variant being added to the mix?

06:15:34PM DTS Speaker:New technology does not create consfusion; a lack of factual information creates confusion. When all of the information is disseminated to the market, we believe that this form of confusion will be replaced by a lot of enthusiasm.

06:15:52PM laaly:How much longer will DTS hold back Jurrasic Park and Men In Black?

06:16:26PM DTS Speaker:DTS does not have any input into which movies will be released in any format. These decisions are always left to the content owner (the studio).

06:16:30PM laaly:Will the new DVD DTS 'standard' work on the current DTS decoders?

06:16:32PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:16:50PM THXer:will DTS be brave and allow DD 5.1 tracks on DTS discs (DVD)

06:17:11PM DTS Speaker:This is not a decision that DTS nor Dolby makes. This is the decision of the content owner (studio).

06:17:24PM bobbo:will present decorder's play future dts dvd's

06:17:27PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:18:18PM Roger L:What is special about the new players, other than we have to wait for them ?

06:18:44PM DTS Speaker:They must recognize DTS data, extract it from the combined bit stream and present it properly at the output.

06:19:05PM THXer:why the secrecy over titles?

06:19:36PM DTS Speaker:There is not secrecy. It's not our position to divulge business conversations that we are having with the motion picture studios.

06:21:05PM rachel:If I have a DTS DVD player but not a DTS decoder will I still be able to play a DTS disc

06:21:13PM DTS Speaker:Please clarify your question.

06:22:20PM Rodger2:All current dts enabled av recievers such as the Sherwood r945 will play future dts encoded dvd's?

06:22:28PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:22:36PM Crassus80:Have you considered advertising the consumer DTS in theaters to help gain brand recognition

06:23:10PM DTS Speaker:Absolutely! We are very fortunate to have 12,000+ screens providing DTS digital audio and a place that we can spread the consumer word.

06:24:20PM Dilbert:Any response to the electronic gaming question?

06:25:31PM DTS Speaker:DTS fully intends to be a major part of all future home and personal entertainment, including movies, music, video games and computer software for your home, personal stereo, and automobile.

06:26:44PM drsmith:when a dts movie is made is it mixed differently than a Dolby Digital one? That is, are certain sound effects louder or softer, on a DTS disc?

06:27:35PM DTS Speaker:DTS does not mix nor remix motion picture soundtracks or music for CDs. DTS simply provides the highest possible quality transparent replica of the final approved product provided to us by the content owner (studio).

06:28:19PM nedron:I'll try this one again. Representatives of Dolby Labs have stated publicly and frequently that DTS is remixing the soundtracks. Earlier, you noted that DTS does not remix. Can we take that as the definitive answer?

06:28:44PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:29:28PM JeffT:Will DVD's with DTS audio be priced the same as today's DD DVDs?

06:30:24PM DTS Speaker:It is not within DTS' provenence to price software products which are sold in retail stores. This is the responsibility of the owner of the titles.

06:30:45PM filburt:Please answer this question. What's taking so long in getting DTD DVDs out? DVD has been delayed for several years and DTS fell behind even more.

06:31:54PM DTS Speaker:The authoring software for implementing a DTS bit stream onto a DVD was not finalized until after many of the current DVD players were already designed.

06:32:27PM GregCa:When will we see mainstream A/V receivers that dio internal DTS decoding? Denon?? Christmas97??

06:35:15PM DTS Speaker:DTS onboard decoding is becoming more and more available every day, including the new Sherwood RS945 with Pro Logic, AC3, and DTS built in, and five times 100 watts of amplification. Many other manufacturers will be following their lead shortly.

06:35:23PM hieu:When is the first DTS DVD released?

06:35:28PM DTS Speaker:First quarter of 1998.

06:35:32PM AVB:So the studio has already mixed from 24 tracks to 6 and all you do is process it the DTS?

06:36:58PM DTS Speaker:Yes. In the case of motion picture soundtracks, DTS makes an exact replica of the 6 channel print master, in the case of DTS music CDs, the content owner remixes starting with the original material (24, 48, etc.) and provides us the their finished 6 channel master.

06:37:19PM totarop:Is DTS currenty working with universil/amblin stuios to produce DTS dvds

06:37:37PM DTS Speaker:Yes and a number of other studios.

06:38:16PM filburt:Any inexpensive DTS decoders in the horizon? Say under $500?

06:38:25PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:38:39PM Crassus81:Have you personally auditioned the Sherwood R-945 yet?

06:38:48PM DTS Speaker:Yes, we have.

06:39:48PM DTS Speaker:Yes, we have and it sounded great!

06:40:07PM Rodger2:if the authoring software is finalized as you say, why are we still waiting for dts product in the marketplace

06:40:37PM DTS Speaker:Because the DTS software introduction is being synchronized with the hardware that is capable of playing these discs to avoid creating confusion in the marketplace.

06:44:11PM dante:Does DTS have any plans to put out a demonstraton disc that shows off the advantages of DTS?

06:44:57PM DTS Speaker:We released one during last year's CES Show and will be producing a new one for the upcoming CES Show. Additionally we have CDs and LDs in the marketplace that truly demonstrate DTS quality.

06:45:23PM nedron:Has there been any talk of PC DTS decoder adapter cards? I'm thinking primarily for the DTS audio CD's I own.

06:46:03PM DTS Speaker:Yes, negotiations are currently under way with providers of that type of upgrade card.

06:46:18PM Rodger2:will there be room on current dvd discs for DD5.1 and DTS to coexist if the studios so desire to market them in that fashion?

06:46:31PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:47:29PM drsmith:Are there movies that were initially Dolby digital in the theater and in subsequent LD/DVD releases that were or are going to be converted to DTS? If so does DTS have any "freedoms" to remix the sound?

06:48:09PM DTS Speaker:Yes. There are already titles available in the DTS format that were originally released in SRD. DTS NEVER remixes the soundtrack. We just provide a transparent replication of the original track.

06:49:47PM drsmith:let me reword that: are there movies that have been ONLY Dolby digital for both theater and home viewing, but have been recently converted to DTS? If so what is this process of conversion? Can DTS remix the sound as they wish?

06:50:30PM DTS Speaker:There is no process of conversion. The DTS home track is made from the original master and no remixing or other manipulation is ever done.

06:51:31PM Roger L:Will DTS advertise in the future on the IMAX films which utilize the 8 Channel DTS Decoders?

06:51:36PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

06:51:44PM drsmith:BTW "Kiss the girls" sounded great!!!

06:51:50PM DTS Speaker:Thanks!!!

06:53:17PM rachel:why not use the PCM tracks like on LD's for DVD's

06:53:52PM DTS Speaker:It is not up to DTS to make this type of determination. There is an established DVD specification to which we must adhere.

06:53:55PM nedron:I downloaded the QuickTime of the new logo and have to say that it's pretty interesting, though I think the "flying CD" had more impact. Can we expect the new logo to roll out to theatres soon?

06:54:33PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

07:08:48PM GregCa:Is it my correct understanding that the same Motorola chip that does the DD decoding does DTS decoding?? If that is true, then why is it taking so long to get mainstream A/V receivers onto the marketplace with built in DTS decoding??

07:09:53PM DTS Speaker:No, there are two different ROM Masked versions of the same chip and a manufacturer who decides to incorporate DTS and AC3 has to add two DSPs into their product.

07:11:02PM ed:Are the current DVD players able to decode your system?

07:11:28PM GregCa:Will current first generation DVD players have the cababilities to play DTS encoded DVD's? There have been numerous rumors stating both yes and no regarding if current model DVD players will be able to play DTS DVD's.

07:12:47PM DTS Speaker:To answer both questions -- none of the existing models on the market will be able to "read" the 5.1 DTS soundtrack on the DVD movies scheduled for March 1998 introduction. However, several hardware manufacturers have already begun DVD players that will be "DTS ready" and expect to market these new models around the same March timetable.

07:12:55PM totarop:If I have a DTS receiver , will m current dvd player send the DTS signal to it ?

07:13:40PM DTS Speaker:Not for next year's DVD movies, but certainly for all existing and future DTS music CDs.

07:14:15PM andrew:I heard from Lexicon that DTS version runs hot so, they recommend a cooling fan for the processor. Is this true?

07:14:59PM DTS Speaker:This was a temporary situation and has been fully resolved. Lexicon is now shipping product to their retailers.

07:15:58PM AVB:In session #2 you said that DTS doesn't controll the pricing but Mr. Delgrosso was asking for opinion on if the forum wanted $60 "superdiscs" or ones priced in the $25-30 range. What would be the difference between the two types?

07:17:31PM DTS Speaker:When content owners choose to utilize DTS for their DVDs, they will set the price; however, DTS has been in discussion with a number of content suppliers about releasing a premium quality DVD which will provide significantly higher-quality video as well as audio.

07:17:33PM HillBilly:Will DTD DVDs also include the DD soundtrack

07:17:34PM hieu: Is it possible for DVD to contain both DTS and AC3 on the same DVD?

07:17:36PM HillBilly:Will DTS DVDs also include a DD soundtrack

07:18:35PM DTS Speaker:It is possible for a DVD to contain both DD and DTS soundtracks. That decision is made by the content owner.

07:21:06PM sbritton:what about the rumours that a dolby employee is spreading about your problem to master audio correctly

07:24:19PM DTS Speaker:The DTS encoding process has never changed the levels, mix or eq of any of the 5.1 soundtracks, and nothing Mr. Dressler claims will ever prove otherwise. We are not certain what Mr. Dressler knows about Dolby much less what he knows about DTS. Roger represents a competitor and is apparently trying to degrade DTS. We have the greatest respect for Ray Dolby and Dolby Laboratories. Hopefully together DTS and Dolby will advance multichannel audio in the marketplace and the marketplace will decide.

07:24:20PM JasonM:Are there plans to implement DTS to the MASS market, Like Dolbly has?

07:25:22PM DTS Speaker:Absolutely, in addition to continuing our movement into the home video and multichannel music market, we plan to be a major part of the PC, gaming, auto sound, and direct broadcast market.

07:25:44PM Quadtrade:It is easy to see that the music artists have endorsed DTS as the preferred sound quality format, any up coming announcements from new labels or artists?s

07:26:43PM DTS Speaker:You are right. The music industry has embraced the DTS format. We are currently working with artists in the studio for upcoming releases of Steely Dan, Bonnie Raitt, Vince Gill, David Benoit, and many others in all genres of music.

07:27:29PM leeds:alan here what about zone 4 software australia

07:27:49PM DTS Speaker:What is your question about zone 4. Please clarify.

07:28:56PM leeds:iam in australia and we are dvd zone 4 PAL will you be releasing dts here

07:29:11PM DTS Speaker:We do not make that decision. That is the decision of the content owner (the studio).

07:31:20PM totarop:If my receiver has a 6 channel input or a DB 25 pin connector will it play a DTS dis from these " new " players

07:31:48PM DTS Speaker:Yes. You will need either a player with an onboard decoder or an external decoder.

07:34:18PM sbritton:will you be keeping your web site more up to date so we dont have to do this

07:35:15PM DTS Speaker:Yes, definitely. We are currently redesigning the website to answer all of these questions and to provide up to date information concerning DTS in the consumer and theatrical marketplaces.

07:35:43PM oj:It's apparrent are avoiding anwsering any questions regaurding pricing for a DTS DVD movie. It stands to reason you must be more expensive than DD as you on your LD releases.

07:36:49PM DTS Speaker:We are not avoiding these questions. We have stated several times this evening that it is not our prerogative to determine retail prices.

07:37:26PM totarop:Is it better to have the DTS decoder in the receiver or player

07:38:29PM DTS Speaker:Either one is good; however, having it in the receiver will allow you to connect your laserdisc player, your DVD player, or your CD player with a digital output to your receiver to take full advantage of all of the formats of DTS multichannel sound.

07:38:40PM cantdrive55:Does DTS control the pricing of encoded movies?

07:38:45PM DTS Speaker:No.

07:39:15PM sbritton:which dvd manufacturers have said they will release players with dts abilty

07:39:28PM DTS Speaker:Look for announcements at the CES Show in January.

07:40:05PM JasonM:Knowing that your system "DTS" is late in the game. Aren't you concerned that Dolby has most of the market share than you do right now? What will you do to conteract this?

07:41:30PM DTS Speaker:As you may know, DTS was over two years late to the digital sound for motion pictures market and since we opened our first film, we have been the world leader in digital sound for motion pictures and continue to this day to retain that world leadership position.

07:41:54PM arrowc:What and where is the CES show

07:42:32PM DTS Speaker:It is the annual Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas each year in January. In 1998, the show will be January 8 - 11.

07:43:48PM wade:Will there be receiver manufacturers other than Yamaha and Sherwood showing dual dts/DD receivers at the CES in January?

07:43:50PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

07:44:25PM sbritton:will you be increasing the out put of dts cd, not much has been released lately

07:44:59PM DTS Speaker:Yes. We are fully committed to the multichannel music market and anticipate well over 100 titles next year alone in the DTS format.

07:45:49PM Quadtrade:At CES this year I expect to see a lot of DTS demonsrtations, where will the official DTS booth be located?

07:46:07PM DTS Speaker:At the Las Vegas Convention Center, upstairs booth N-209.

07:47:26PM Audiofreak:Would you be willing to discuss lowering the prices of DTS LDs and keeping prices competitive with Image Ent.? They are your sole distributer.

07:47:45PM DTS Speaker:We will communicate your request directly to Image Entertainment.

07:47:50PM cantdrive55:Is the CES at the Hilton Convention center?

07:49:06PM DTS Speaker:No, the convention is all over town. The DTS booth is located at the Las Vegas Convention Center, upstairs booth N-209. In addition, your are welcome to visit the DTS decoders also being demonstrated at over 62 different demo rooms throughout the show.

07:49:27PM Darian:What about DVD players with DTS outputted as analog?

07:50:35PM DTS Speaker:Certain manufacturers may elect to include the DTS decoder within the DVD player. Others may choose simply to output the DTS bit stream to be decoded in your receiver or a separate decoder.

07:50:38PM juliantow3:When can we see DTS DVDs

07:50:44PM DTS Speaker:First quarter 1998.

07:51:39PM totarop:Does DTS & player/receiver manufactures see DTS as " High-end " or will pricing be competive with DD and when will it beome competive because it's not now

07:52:49PM DTS Speaker:As with any new technology that has perceived value, it is generally incorporated at the high end first. As the technology gains popularity, it then transcends to lower price points which we are already starting to see with DTS.

07:53:28PM Audiofreak:Will your DTS DVDs be completely 6 channels or more? Dolby Digital seems to be misleading the public with mono, stereo or prologic encoding.

07:55:08PM DTS Speaker:Good observation! DTS encoded DVDs will always contain the multichannel format. They may additionally contain some sort of stereo.

07:55:52PM cantdrive55:It is interesting that I (and probably a lot of folks here) heard about DTS by reading Wide Screen Review. Do you plan to advertise heavily to penettrate the masses?

07:58:27PM DTS Speaker:We are currently running consistent print ads in many of the finest magazines on the market, including Home Theater, Audio Video Interiors, Stereophile Guide to Home Theater, and many more. In 1998, the market presence for DTS will in fact increase dramatically with a whole new series of co-op ads with our new hardware licensees.

07:58:56PM Alan Jackson:Will these sessions be archived for download on your Web site?

07:59:03PM DTS Speaker:Yes.

08:02:47PM DTS Speaker:Thank you very much. We are sorry we did not have a chance to answer all your questions. Many more people responded than we anticipated. Please keep in touch and look for upgrades to our website. Tonight's questions and answers will be posted on the website. Thank you once again.
