Reviews
Just received a copy and played it to compare with my original ‘72 press. WOW oh wow is the bass so rich and warm on this pressing. The vocals of Todd are clearer, and with some minor EQ adjustments, if sounds like your right in the studio. You can turn the volume up on this and thank me later.
The packaging is done well and the insert poster is thicker than the original too. I really enjoy the color of the two Lp’s. It’s not to say the original press is bad but if you’re looking to upgrade your copy of this landmark record, this is a nice upgrade that looks good on the turntable.
I didn't notice any clipped intros, what I did notice was that the studio banter at the beginning of songs like "Hello It's Me" is attached to the song before and so the song is indexed "clean" when the song starts properly. Beyond those editorial choices, this sounds damn clear, a bit brighter than other versions, where the original sounds more soft/muffled like an old cassette, so here some details are more audible on playback like the feeling you get after getting wax taken out of your ears. I honestly thought all of these years that this was stylistically made as more lo-fi recording until I heard this. From the start, it's a bit startling, you can hear the detail of the cymbals on "I Saw The Light" where it usually sounds more like an undefined sprinkler, or salt shaker, wow this sounds a lot different, clean but no hiss, it's a different experience, so really, this CD is actually pretty awesome. I'm glad I got it.- Many indexing errors here. Some songs start in the pervious track so it sounds clipped.. Plus one song doesn't fade in like it's supposed to.
Get the Rhino CD. It sounds better (less harsh upper mids) and the track starts are correct.
This 1989 reissue of Todd Rundgren's 1972 double album Something / Anything? offers a fresh opportunity to experience one of his most acclaimed works. Released under Castle Communications and Essential! Records (catalog number ESDLP007), this version presents the original tracks with clarity and depth.
The album showcases Rundgren's versatility, blending genres such as blues rock, power pop, pop rock, and prog rock. Notably, the first three sides feature Rundgren performing all instruments and vocals, highlighting his multi-instrumental prowess. The fourth side includes a live recording of "Baby Needs a New Pair of Snakeskin Boots (A Pop Operetta)," adding a dynamic live element to the collection.
This reissue is housed in a gatefold sleeve and includes two printed inner sleeves and a four-page lyric insert, enhancing the physical presentation of the album. It's a valuable addition for collectors and a great starting point for those new to Rundgren's work.
Todd Rundgren is an intensely gifted and prolific artist with a vast and interesting array of albums under his belt including this beguiling, unusual and amazing double album from 1972.
You can definitely hear Todd’s influences, ranging from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Motown and Philly soul, to 60’s garage rock, all mashed together with incredible hooks, great musicianship and sumptuous close harmonies to create a swag of superb pop songs; mostly recorded and overdubbed with Todd singing all the vocals and playing all the instruments.
The gorgeous, 60’s power-pop styled hit ‘I Saw The Light’ sets the tone with ‘Black Maria’, the shredtasic ‘Little Red Lights’ and the crashing, tumbling ‘Couldn’t I Just Tell You’ showcasing Todd’s more rocky tendencies.
I also love the eminently hummable ballad ‘It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference’, the poppy drift of ‘Hello It’s Me’ and the pulsing proto-80’s synthfest ‘Breathless’. crazy, drummin’ drive of “I’m in the Clique”.
I found this specific album in a dumpster outside of Mill City Sound. it was marked as 99 cents, just thought I'd share- Same lacquer and plating as USA pressing from 1972: same runout code, Sterling stamp and Lee Hulko etchings on all 4 sides.
Great sounding pressing! I never heard this album sound so clear! Also love the whole package: the box, the coloured vinyl etc. Everything is beautiful.
Actually, the original pressing of Something/Anything is surprisingly bass heavy for a record from 1972. I just did an A/B comparison with my first press Bearsville/WB copy and both are equally bass heavy at flat EQ levels. If anything, this Rhino press is a little clearer at the higher frequencies, most noticible on Todd's vocals. I will keep both.but this version is a solid press and finding it in good condition may be easier than the OG. Todd is God!
