Student applications open for Google Summer of Code 2018

Today we begin accepting applications from university students who want to participate in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2018. Are you a university student? Want to use your software development skills for good? Read on. Now entering its 14th year, GSoC gives students from around the globe an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of open source software development while working from home. Students receive a stipend for successful contribution to allow them to focus on their project for the duration of the program. A passionate community of mentors help students navigate technical challenges and monitor their progress along the way. Past participants say the real-world experience that GSoC provides sharpened their technical skills, boosted their confidence, expanded their professional network and enhanced their resume. Interested students can submit proposals on the program site between now and Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 16:00 UTC. While many students began preparing in February when we announced the 212 participating open source organizations, it's not too late to start! The first step is to browse the list of organizations and look for project ideas that appeal to you. Next, reach out to the organization to introduce yourself and determine if your skills and interests are a good fit. Since spots are limited, we recommend writing a strong proposal and submitting a draft early so you can get feedback from the organization and increase the odds of being selected. We also highly recommend perusing the FAQ and Program Rules, as well as joining the discussion mailing list. One way we achieve that goal is through our student programs, Google Summer of Code (for university students) and Google Code-in (for pre-university students).Over 15,000 students from more than 100 countries have worked with 23,000 mentors and contributed to 560+ open source projects.This is why we’re excited to announce the next round of both of our student programs!

Google Code-in begins for students November 28, 2016For the seventh consecutive year, Google Code-in will give students (ages 13-17) a chance to explore open source. Students will find opportunities to learn and get hands on experience with tasks from a range of categories. This structure allows students to stretch themselves as they take on increasingly more challenging tasks.Getting started is easy: once the contest begins, simply choose an interesting task from our participating organizations’ lists and complete it. Mentors from the organizations are available to help online.Google Code-in is for students asking questions like:

What is open source?

What kinds of stuff do open source projects do?

How can I write real code when all I’ve done is a little classroom work?

Can I contribute even if I’m not really a programmer?

With tasks in five different categories, there’s something to fit almost any student’s skills:

Code: writing or refactoring

Documentation/Training: creating/editing documents and helping others learn more

Outreach/research: community management, outreach/marketing, or studying problems and recommending solutions

Quality Assurance: testing and ensuring code is of high quality

User Interface: user experience research or user interface design and interaction

Are you a university student looking to learn more about open source software development? Look no further than Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and spend your summer break working on an exciting open source project, learning how to write code.For twelve years running, GSoC gives participants a chance to work on an open source software project entirely online. Students, who receive a stipend for their successful contributions, are paired with mentors who can help address technical questions and concerns throughout the program. Former GSoC participants have told us that the real-world experience they’ve gained during the program has not only sharpened their technical skills, but has also boosted their confidence, broadened their professional network and enhanced their resumes.Students who are interested can submit proposals on the program site now through Friday, March 25 at 19:00 UTC. The first step is to review the 180 open source projects and find project ideas that appeal to you. Since spots are limited, we recommend a strong project proposal to help increase your chances of selection.
