GameEx 19.88 - AI HD 60 fps Videos

The robots did it not me (mostly), but all the videos I host and that are downloaded with GameEx automatically have been AI upscaled to HD and 60 fps. As they use a newer codec and are highly optimised they are selected to download by default and there is a new setting for this release.

The MAME arcade set is particularly good.

I provide this all for free and a free FTP service. I have no issue these being used for other frontends.

A new pinball cabinet MAME vertical set is also on the way with a higher resolution and the correct modified pixel aspect ratio..

The original videos are from the freely available MAME multimedia set by Progretta. I don't think special permission is required to use or include them with anything.

MAME videos

The new MAME title videos are complete. They are located on the FTP here: /-GameEx-/- Emulator Artwork & Videos -/MAME/video_title

95% of them are a decent attract mode capture.

The upscaled videos on the FTP are however the best quality. In the next release of GameEx there will be an option to chose between the three types to automatically download.

Audio can be a slight issue on the title videos because they are all fixed to 60hz.

The title videos are up to date as of MAME 0.287 and include all working or imperfect non clones unless the name of the clone game is different.

60 fps MAME attract mode title videos

10 years ago I created a 60 fps MAME attract mode title video set.

I decided to revisit this project last week with the latest MAME sets, MAME version and ffmpeg.

I also fixed up and updated the code to run at 64 bit and .net framework 4.8 (it was on 2).

When I initially did this 10 years ago, I used a custom build of MAME with code changes to run at 60 hz. Now with the latest MAME no code changes other than nag removal but using syncrefresh.

I also improved the encoding and the files are now smaller.

The videos are now processing on a couple of machines and should be complete in two-three weeks. There are over a 1400 complete already.</p.

They are located here on the public free FTP server:

-GameEx-/- Emulator Artwork & Videos -/MAME/video_titles_60fps_2026

There are samples on my YouTube Channel.here.
Enjoy.

GameEx Online performance and AI

I have been heavily working on GameEx cross platform and have setup and configuration working via the GameEx Online web app. Its tricky building this into GameEx itself across all versions due to GUI elements, paricularly text boxes although I realise some will have privacy concerns. It took a few seconds to click through each page and performance seemed like a big problem that I had not addressed before. I ran the page through ChatGPT Pro and asked it to improve performance with a single prompt. The result just worked and provided a 1000% improvement. As you can imagine I was very impressed by this. On top of this I removed dead code myself to produce a much smaller binary. It is not a heavily hit site but performance is perfect now.

Some nice progress with GameEx cross platform.

Mame launching and list updates are working on both Linux and Mac, supporting both system wide and local MAME folder installs.

Setup and configuration is now working.

Finally, performance on Android has been greatly improved. It renders at a lower resolution and then upscales.

GameEx 19.77

I was using some software by Preemptive solutions on a scheme for small software houses as part of the build process for GameEx and PinballX.

They have been significantly raising the price every year and this year they raised it by another $1000.

So I spent the last 24 hours migrating over to another solution which fortunately is now as good or better at an 8th of the price. This release uses the new build tools and I say adios to Preemptive. Thanks for wearing a condom.

The new product does some nice optimisations to the code. I notice performance improvements.

New GPU accelarated video renderer.

Nvidia removed VMR 9 support and this release adds a new video renderer fallback using media Foundation and shared textures with DirectX 11 which is GPU accelerated.

Upgraded to .net 10 runtime and the .net desktop runtime version 10 is included iin the installer rather than 8. it is still compiled as version 6 but set to run under 10. Compatibility with older operating systems back to XP remains intact.

Fixed up Karaoke support and .cdg and .kar files are supported again, although take a while to load.

If you experience any new issues with video playback or old basic GPU's please report on the forums. The new renderer required significant changes including moving to DirectX 9ex from plain 9. Thankis Nvidia!

Coding with AI

if anyone is interested, I did pursue with coding with help from AI. It does allow you to find out and do absolutely anything with code.

What I found is when it is wrong and it often is you just have to tell it is wrong, then it agrees and produces the correct code. This often needs several attempts and does require you to see and try for yourself. On the plus side I can get an answer and code for practically anything for free and dont need someone to help me. When it is challenged it will provide valid results. On the negative, it is often wrong and overconfident. This is what takes up unnecessary time at this point

I compare it to an incredibly talented employee but a very lazy one who needs a constant kick.

I can understand how it has put junior developers out of work but it is going to be a while before it replaces all developers and consultants because you need to know when it is wrong and it often is, at least for now

GameEx 19.66

I spent about 20 hours trying to implement another video playback solution without lots of work because NVidia recently broke VMR 9 support. I thought I found another solution via ChatGPT which was the first time I tried it. It looked amazing but it gave me absolute horseshit over and over. How AI is replacing coders seems hard to believe. It seemed hopeless when experienced people need help. I tried Direct9Ex with DXVA2 and media foundation which it completely lied about. I also tried the same but not hardware accelerated which was valid but It did not work because the current Microsoft codecs dont support RGB output.

Although also legacy DirectX9Ex with FlipEx seemed like a good move on its own and I have it working well, then had problems recreating the device which is a big issue for a front end. I have this code done if I find a solution. Maybe waiting for DWM to be ready or somehow resetting it could be a solution.

FFMpeg may be a way to go for video playback and should perform accept it did involve a memory copy well, and I may try that but probably no better than what I have

Of note both AMD and Intel previously removed or broke VMR 9 support but then put it back. Which is why there was already a fallback in place

PinballX and GameEx do have the option to switch to a more legacy video solution and normally this is automatically detected. However, Nvidia neglected to tell the operating system they removed VMR 9 support so the automatic fallback was not working. Maybe they are using AI coding too!

Also of note when questioning the Brave search AI if there were issues with the solutions ChatGPT it gave the correct response.

I can recommend the Brave AI.

With these two new versions of GameEx and PinballX I check for Nvidia driver versions, so it is now again automatic as it was with intel and AMD.

Happy new year.

I wrote this on Facebooks tonight and their AI removed it citing cyber security concerns. I thought it seemed good so wanted to share.

More an example of how clever AI is getting. May seem funny now, but trust me, from an expert, it is no joke. 2026 (maybe 2027) will be a significant year in human history. However, it is mostly smoke and mirrors right now. It is just computer programming and software, but they call it AI. There is nothing intelligent or artificial about it. Dismissing bad actors for now it is the lack of people in power's intelligence and their apathy (and laziness and to save money) as the biggest issue we face. It is how some will trust it without question and blame it for their actions. That has happened already. Unlike technology of the past one of the primary goals is for it to seem as real as possible. It lies to you rather than say it does not know. They call it AI delusions but it is an intentional part of the programming.

VPN and ad/tracker blocker is now a necessity not a nice to have and that will be good for only so long. Buy it now before you are asked for your papers to do so and don't complain about it as they put it under the umbrella of protecting children who by the way will be tracked and monitored for the rest of their lives (we will welcome it into our homes).

You would think it's science fiction and paranoia but it is very real unfortunately. Take solace that it is already too late and not much anyone can do. Our generation will also be dead before too long and immigrants are the least of your problems!

If anyone cares or even understands, Muhlvad or Proton for VPN. (Nord and a few others are the McDonalds of VPN's and free one's are 'dangerous'.)

The AI and privacy concerns are separate issues and also spilt between commercial and political interests, but they are intertwined and linked to advancements in technology and that will become more apparent soon.

If there is a conspiracy theory or valid reason behind what governments and tycoons around the world are doing, who knows, these are just the facts and these people do not value freedom.

"You may feel free in the future but it is an illusion and they may not want you to feel free."

Proudly not written by AI.
Tom Speirs. 2025

Ps: Shortly after writing this, facebook removed it and restricted my account. AI at work for you but pretty ironic.

Smartscreen warning

My code signing certificate was renewed for three years and GameEx and PinballX have been updated with the new security. This will cause a "Windows has protected your PC" message when running the setup until there are enough downloads for Microsoft to detect it as safe. In the meantime click "more infp" then "run anyway". Thank you.

GameEx 18.90

GameEx and GameEx Arcade Edition have been combined into a single installer and should cover every Windows operating system since and including XP. I spent a lot of time optimizing and cleaning up the installer as well as testing on many operating systems and platforms. They both share the same files and config but the Setup Wizard will show the appropriate options for both versions.

Main thing to note when upgrading for the first time is the install will use the install folder for GameEx not Arcade Edition.

It seems like a simple nice and obvious improvement but all this required a lot of work and testing.

It does mean one installer build and upload for me too which helps.

There are also a few bug fixes and optimizations.

Heads up .net 6 end of life

I'm one of the few to still care if you are running Windows 7 or even XP on a cabinet based setup but .net 6 is approaching end of life at the end of the year and assuming no issues; builds that use .net core based compile will be moving to the latest LTS release of .net (core based). This only supports the latest Microsoft Operating systems. I still plan to support .net 4 (not core based) until it is not possible to do so and this will be your way forward on Windows 7 and below down to and ancluding XP. The combined installers will just work but if you are on Windows 7 it will be swiched to the .net 4 build at end of the year if you update,

This is something I started in 2020. I have not made much progress until recently but now have the Windows x64 version nearly completed.

It originally started as a separate project but now it uses the same code base.

Please consider an alpha version at this point just for feedback and testing. If you are new here please use the other GameEx installs.

The benefits of the multiplatform version:
- Few or no external dependencies. Just Unity/Mono.
- Eventually versions for other platforms such as Linux and Android.
- Setup will be web based leveraging GameEx online,
- Everything uses the same code base. All versions get updates.

Downsides:
- There is video support but no MKV support just yet.
- Will be missing some features but both Arcade and regular GameEx will be supported.

	Instructions:

	Windows:
Extract to a location with write access. Then run one of three executables.

GameEx 18.55

Looking to remove any possible video or input lag GameEx will now lower its process prioirty to idle after launching an emulator.

Fixes to the sync refresh MAME display feature. I revisited all this and looked at GroovyMAME usage on an LCD. It will work with GroovyMAME but on a 5 year old mini PC I reverted to vanilla MAME in my new Chewlix build, I incestigated all this again and other than going with a Mister, your best bet in 2024 is to go for a G Sync monitor for MAME for no tearing and input lag on an flat panel.

In MAME attract mode the bezel will try to show the logo first if available rather than marquee. Looks mich nicer.

GameEx 18.38

In attempt to provide full configuration and access via GameEx Online with the web Setup Wizard for current and future projects the site now allows local directory and file browsing for remote paths. This will be also good for upcoming projects not on windows platforms. I learnt a little about jquery doing this for the popup browser on the site. This change requires an update to the client to work. I also moved back to .net 6 from .net 7. .net 7 actually seemed to perform worse and excluded older windows os versions such as 7. I've also spent some time optimizing gameex.com and pinballx.com on Google page speed insights. So hopefully the sites should perform a little better for you on mobile devices. Note the remote browsing is a little slow as its client server.

Thank you.

I decided to go purely donation based a couple of months back. This was mainly due to overwhelming competition which alone I cannot keep up with. The competition is vast ranging from one commercial windows front end to many free RetroPie and Android solutions. I saw the writing on the wall post lockdown and trying to oprerate commercially in this field is a dying business. I believe there will be no succesful commercial front ends of any viabillity in two - three years time. Having said that I feel many still enjoy GameEx and PinballX, and download services and wish me to continue. I also enjoy it very much. Unfortunaly PayPal ditched me the other week. I can only assume they did not like the lose association I have with games and roms. They have the right as a business to serve who they like and from what I read, they do this frequently. Although I provide no illegal content here or anywhere and I pay my taxes.

I have new payment gateway options now and I ask if you enjoy my products and wish to support me you please switch your renewals over. My costs are not insignificant and I do not want to have to provide a lesser service. Thank you so much, Tom.

Big changes. Gone free.

The pandemic, losing my mother during it and dwindling interest from others along with a different situation personally has prompted me to make some significant changes and me wanting to make things purely a hobby again, albeit funded by me.

Everything is now free, including all variations of GameEx, the FTP, artwork download and GameEx Online.

I want to do things purely for the glory, hobby and community, once again.

Hopefully it will bring some renewed interest and a better purpose for me, while not having to worry about taxes, EU red tape and not much income to show for it.

I want to enjoy my work and not compete on a commercial level with free products and a commercial product that spends large amounts of money on marketing and employees.

I also want to give something back. We are all riding off the back of other peoples work and efforts and I want to have more admirable intentions going forward. I was primarily inspired by MAME and that has always been free.

I can afford the cost and hopefully I will get some new support and renewed interest because of my good intentions and I can continue to be motivated, if not more so.

Thank you to everyone who ever purchased something from me and all the support over the years. There has been many high points such as products being shown on Shark Tank twice, Pinball hall of fame and being featured in numerous books, publications and cover disks (if you are old enough to know what they are!)

I have two new free GameEx products in the pipeline and I am in no way slowing things down. Its just time to mix it up again..

Hopefully you will support me in going free for all but if you just purchased and are unhappy feel free to contact me for a refund.

Its all about the hobby and always should be.

	Thank you.
Tom Speirs.

New media playback features to GameEx for a change. Now features m3u and m3u plus support. Simply drop an m3u file or an internet shortcut into one of your video folders, and voila IPTV support.

A bit old school now but the GameEx DVD player now includes madVR support.

madVR support is automatic and now also works on GameEx 64 bit installs.

Fixes a rather annoying bug where the please wait animation will always stay on for a minimum of 2 seconds.
X Arcade GameEx Arcade build

I recently built a rig for a good friend. It used an X-Arcade Tank Stick and an Amazon certified refurbished Dell Optiplex connected to TV via a 25 foot HDMI cable. As well as running latest MAME with 60hz sync refresh support and Daphne with HD versions, it features all the third generation consoles which all tend to work well with Arcade Controls. I also added ColecoVision as he had an Adam as a kid.

Digitizing VHS in 2021

I recently digitized a very cherished 21 year old PAL VHS tape into a 60 fps 4K MP4. I was very impressed with the end result but I had to do a lot of research and experimentation to get it there and I thought it might be useful to share the workflow. This applies to both NTSC and PAL VHS.

Note: This is a high end solution in terms of kit required for best possible results at home

AVerMedia SD PCIe video capture card CE310B (new)

Corsair Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro MK.2 (new)

Refurbished Super vhs player from ebay (need one with TBC and SVIdeo output).

RTX 2080 super or better (already had so did not get scalped). For 1080p can use less.

Capture to avermedia card at highest resolution in 422 from svideo with cropping to x264 lossless and pcm audio with ffmpeg

Deinterlace with avisynth QTGMC preset very slow to x264 lossless and pcm audio with ffmpeg

Encode again lossless but with aspect set to 4:3 (only set meta data, don't resize)

Playback with potplayer (x86) with madvr plugin at 4k with random noise removal and smooth motion to 60hz. (don't need smooth motion for NTSC)

Capture potplayer with Corsair Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro MK.2

Use VirtualDub2 to trim and with crop filter to make 4:3 and encode final result with x264.

I am working on an online list manager which will take you closer to managing your cabinet without getting off the couch (even if on the other side of the world).

I have not taken donations for ten years and PinballX is essentially free software along with https://vpdb.io which I host.

If you want to support the cause please consider purchasing a subscription or lifetime access. I hate to say it but money from my hobby goes a long way to motivate me if not support my lifestyle.

Im not the one to go to on every product for some people these days but I (and others here) have motivated and inspired many people and innovated and been the first with many things..

You will get a lot for your money including GmeEx Online and you will keep me motivated, innovative and inspired.

vpdb.io

I just wanted to remind people out there three years ago Freezy's groundbreaking 100% open VPDB project went live and has had free hosting by me since with not even requests for donations and has experienced 99.99% uptime..

	Go to VPDB.io

What if there was a platform that would make it possible to download a game and everything related in one single click? A platform that comes with a tool that downloads and names content like it should be while respecting the author's work? That takes under a minute to set up? Something a newcomer would be instantly comfortable with?

A platform where you can browse online, that is fast, open and beautiful, where searching for games is a matter of milliseconds and everything related to a game is in one place? A platform that is so simple to use that preloading cabs or burning DVDs wouldn't even make sense because it would be too cumbersome in comparison?

A tool that would assist table authors in publishing their great work, where multiple authors can maintain a release and are properly credited? A tool that sits on your cab, is connected to the platform and updates games when the user tells it to? Even remotely, or even automatically as soon as the author of a game releases a new version?

VPDB aims to be that platform.

VPDB stands for Virtual Pinball Database. It can do many things you might even once have dreamt about. It's technology coming from members of the virtual pinball community who happen to be software engineers in professional life. It's a platform that makes it fun again to upload, browse, download, rate and comment on content created by this beautiful community.

We've coded this up from scratch in our spare time and offer it as a free platform. The code is open source, that means everybody can install VPDB in their own environment and tinker with it. We also offer a public and documented API, giving access to our database to any third party applications you might come up with.

The reason we've done this is because we believe that innovation comes from providing openly the tools necessary so they can be improved and live on. In such a vibrant community like this, where people provide hard and beautiful work at no cost, we think this is specially important.

GameEx 16.46

New MAME filter - no multi screen games. This excludes games with multiple screens such as Playchoice 10, when updating the game list. Note that this is on by default.

Slightly faster MAME list update.

There is a new MAME display feature aimed at users of panel displays. When this setting is enabled and a MAME game is set to run close to 60hz, GameEx will inject some additional command line options to slightly slow down or speed up the game resulting in smooth frame rates and low lag. Three techniques are used depending on if your display has a high frequency such as FreeSync or G-Sync and whether the game refresh is slightly faster, falling back to syncing the refresh and not throttling for 60hz displays. A list update is required.

ArcadeVGA settings have been removed from the setup wizard as its fairly legacy now but the settings are still supported. Several other dead settings have also been removed.

The popup game descriptions are now slightly alpha blended.

Back in 2001, a guy called David Dries created www.cinemarcade.com and some fantastic MAME fan videos.

Skip forward nearly 20 years and I have upscaled three of the videos to 1440p, 60fps smooth motion.

The videos were converted with https://www.convert-it.org

Upscaled MAME videos

Upscaling MAME videos

The next version of Convert-It video converter features upscaling provided by waifu2x. It requires a good NVidia GPU..

Waifu2x is a powerful image upscaler for Anime and cartoon based images. What people do not realize is this upscaler also works incredibly well for retro video game graphics.

I've started a project to upscale the standard MAME video distribution. The results are impressive. When complete these will be freely available. I chose to convert them to 800x600 and 600x800 for vertical. This allows for further good upscaling from video players and allows for a faster convert, and also keeps the flavor of the original games.

The new version of Convert-It will be available shortly and here are some sample videos that have been completed.

GameEx Arcade Edition 16.45

As always, an EmuMovies subscription is highly recommended but I have created some system platform videos based on the standard MAME Multimedia and this release can download them automatically.

The videos were created with a custom .net app I wrote along with FFMpeg and waifu2x for upscaling.

Here are some samples. MAME and Turbografx.

Emulation PC for 4 year old:

i recently built a PC gaming box for a 4 year old and used GameEx Gamelauncher mode for the front end. Quick video showing it in action.

I purchased a refurbished mini Dell OptiPlex 9020 for $250 US and two Amazon wired Xbox 360 controllers.

The box runs several emulators under Retroarch and the latest MAME. It handles latest MAME, N64 and PSX with upscaling with ease and runs at full frame rate with MP4 videos. Its also incredibly easy to use due to GameEx Gamelauncher mode and all games can be exited by holding down the guide button on the controllers.
