This is messy 😬 A galaxy cluster is exactly what you'd think: a bunch of galaxies grouped together. This galaxy cluster is made of two sub-clusters with similar mass, locked in a messy process of interacting and separating. Eventually, they'll merge. Though their relationship is… complicated, it helps us study the region. The cluster's extreme and concentrated mass curves light with its gravity. This is called gravitational lensing, and it works like a glass lens bending and focusing light. Objects are magnified and their brightness is enhanced, so if they lie in exactly the right place, background galaxies and even individual stars that would have been far too faint and distant to spot will be made visible.

Another mission to the International Space Station in the books! Astronaut Chris Williams and two cosmonaut colleagues wrapped up their 241-day journey in low Earth orbit on July 26. There is more than meets the eye in this photo. 🔎 The ring around the central galaxy cluster is evidence of dark matter, the invisible glue holding the universe together. Dark matter doesn’t emit, reflect, or absorb light, but it has gravity like ordinary matter—that’s how we know it’s there. Scientists still have a lot to learn about dark matter, but our soon-to-launch Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aims to shed light on the mystery.
