Climate-Related Responses
WCK has witnessed the crisis of climate-triggered hunger around the world. Hurricanes are developing earlier in the year and occurring with increased intensity; devastating wildfires are becoming a year-round threat; and warmer temperatures are fueling added moisture in the air, unleashing record rains and flooding. WCK’s Climate Disaster Fund is a decade-long commitment to support communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and raises flexible resources that allow WCK to mobilize with the “urgency of now” to climate disasters without having to wait for disaster-specific funding. Support of WCK’s climate-related relief work will allow them to deploy anywhere in the world when needed, and to do so with urgency. Throughout its organizational history, World Central Kitchen has responded to 50+ climate disasters in over 20 countries around the world, supporting communities impacted by cyclones, hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, winter storms, and tornado outbreaks.
Disaster Relief
WCK’s innovative and rapid-focused relief model gets food directly to people affected by crises while boosting livelihoods, businesses, and economies. Since its founding, WCK has served hundreds of millions of meals in over 50 countries around the world following crises—their work is not restricted by geography. WCK does not have a singular playbook to emergency responses; instead, they monitor and assess food needs on a case-by-case basis, and adapt support in real time based on community needs. Throughout its organizational history, World Central Kitchen has launched more than 150 emergency responses, supporting communities impacted by hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, conflict, refugee crises, volcano eruptions, a global pandemic, and more.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
World Central Kitchen is a frontline force that shows up with the urgency of now where others can’t or won’t. Key goals of WCK’s work are to:
1) Deliver warm, fresh meals to communities without food access due to acute crises. WCK’s relief model delivers warm meals and other food support directly to communities while boosting livelihoods, businesses, and economies. WCK has served hundreds of millions of meals through comforting plates of food, kits full of fresh ingredients, and produce boxes, supporting communities affected by hurricanes, floods, humanitarian crises, conflict, and other disasters.
2) Work side by side with local vendors, volunteers, restaurants, and community organizations to invest resources back into crisis-afflicted areas. WCK’s Response Corps members—trained local chefs and contractors—often join relief efforts and introduce WCK to community organizations and restaurants in the area. The support of Response Corps, Chef Corps (a global network of hundreds of culinary leaders who champion WCK’s work), and other local partners enable them to serve meals immediately. WCK also works with local food suppliers, hires from within the community, and collaborates with NGOs.
3) Provide comfort, hope, and love through their food service. A warm meal—tailored to the culture and recipes of the local community—can bring more than nutrition and calories. WCK utilizes the unique power of food to provide hope, comfort, and the reassurance that communities are not alone during times of crises. During the response to the severe flooding in the Valencia region of Spain brought upon by storm DANA in October 2024, WCK supported the residents of hard-hit Paiporte. A resident shared, “We haven’t eaten a hot plate of food in days; many of the neighbors do not have power at home or gas and we cannot even heat a plate of food. Thank you for giving us hot meals; we really needed it.”
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
World Central Kitchen’s guiding philosophy is: wherever there is a fight so that hungry people may eat, we will be there. Key pillars of their food relief model include:
- Providing hot, fresh, and culturally appropriate meals to populations facing acute hunger due to crises;
- Working alongside community leaders and organizations to best understand the local dynamics and help lead the emergency response;
- Investing in impacted communities by purchasing from local vendors, hiring restaurant partners, and employing locals to staff and support WCK operations;
- Collaborating with local chefs, logisticians, and team members to meet the unique needs of the community; and
- Leveraging WCK’s vast network of supporters and resources to fuel and sustain emergency response efforts.
