SCHOOL NOTES MICHAELMAS 2015

We have certainly had our highs this term, with
so much success to celebrate on many fronts,
but we have also had some very difficult times.
It is in these times that we learn the most
about ourselves and those that surround us.
The support we have had has been truly
humbling and very gratefully received. It has
made everyone at Sunningdale realise how
lucky we are.We are lucky to work in such a
special place with such a strong community;we
are lucky to have such a fantastic group of boys
who have been a constant source of strength;
we are lucky to have wonderful parents and
friends who have been so quick to offer
support and comfort and we are lucky with the
whole independent school community,so many
of whom have been in touch when we really
needed it.
1st XI Football

It is true to say we were excited about the prospects for this team and we were right to be. They were
a fantastic group of players to work with and we had so much fun throughout the season.
The start of the season was a little frustrating.We created chances but simply could not finish. Our first
two losses were both games that we should have won.Horris Hill had a good side who were better than
us on the day.After this game we made a change in our shape and everything seemed to click.
Up front, Hopkins found the Midas touch in front of goal and ended with a tally of 25 goals for the
season. He was ably supported by Russell playing just behind him and they developed a very successful
partnership. The results started to come and we never looked like losing from then on. We were
exasperated in the Ludgrove game when they equalised with the last kick of the game.
The midfield pairing of Senior ma. and Barrett also grew in confidence and began to dominate possession
and give incisive passes that cut through many a defence.This was particularly true against Milbourne
Lodge who we rather took apart, and our wingers,Hopton ma. and Lewis ma.were fast and determined
and put in some very decent crosses.
Our success was also largely built upon a very solid defence. Hawkey and Zakhir ma. were simply
fantastic in the centre, working tirelessly and selflessly. Hinchliffe and Senior mi. improved throughout the
season to complete the back four. Buxton commanded his box with authority and developed his kicking
game impressively.
It was so exciting to see this team develop and do so well and with eight of them back next year, we will
be looking for even more success!
Colours were awarded to Russell, Hopkins, Hawkey and Zakhir ma.

Socials
This term we were lucky enough to have two socials, one with Heathfield and one with St George's.
Both were great fun and the food delicious. At St. George's we did slow dancing which was very
romantic. At both socials the music was very good and had flashing lights and disco balls. At
Heathfield we sat down for a very enjoyable supper of chatting and good food, then we hit the
dance floor! The were both equally successful and many of us were given telephone numbers and
email addresses. We look forward to more in the future.

Big Tree Climb
One of the favourite weekend activities, The Big
Tree Climb returned this term. The boys had a
fantastic time out in the trees.
Sunningdale Honey
This term the boys had a chance to draw a label
for all our honey jars we filled in the summer term.
In the end the label was a combination of Hagger,
Boscawen and Senior mi's designs.
The bees are currently hibernating and waiting
patiently for the spring, so we haven't had any
contact with them. However we have enjoyed having
three more pigs this term and we have been tracking
their weights and plotting graphs in Science.

New Boys
The new boys had a wonderful tea with Mr and
Mrs Dawson at the beginning of term and have
settled in very well.

Nativity
This year's nativity play was Gift of a Lamb. An enchanting, old fashioned play, that the boys took on with
aplomb.Yurasov, the storyteller, gave an incredibly mature performance, keeping the audience captivated
throughout.There were other stand out performances on the night, in particular, all three shepherds,
(Barraclough ma, Caddy mi and Phelps) Mary (Guest-Gornall) and Joseph (Allen). All the boys in Form I
and form II put an enormous amount of effort in to learn their lines and their lyrics and I would like to
thank them profoundly. The nativity wouldn't have been anything without the directorial brilliance of Miss
Boyd, the sensational costumes made by Miss Foynes and the musical genius of Mrs Mackay.

La Vacquerie
Two separate groups of boys in their final year
spent a week in France at the school's house, La
Vacquerie, in Normandy. The boys had a great
week visiting the Cinema Circulaire at Arro-
manches, the Overlord Museum, the Airborne
Museum, the Caen Memorial and the German
cemetery. Between their educational visits and
their French lessons, they even managed to have
some good football games on the beach in the
evening. A very enjoyable stay capped with
amazing food!

French Drama evening
On Thursday 15th October, Sunningdale hosted
its annual French drama evening. Form I and
Form II each performed a song unaccompanied
and all sounded very French.Some forms wrote
their own short plays and sketches, all in French,
which at times tested the audience a little.
Several bilingual boys recited poems.
The boys really enjoyed themselves on stage and
it was nice to see so many parents.

Trip to the Science Museum
Forms I, II, III and IV enjoyed an informative and fun trip to the Science Museum in London. The boys spent
the morning in the Launch Pad looking at various experiments and in the afternoon they had a talk
on ‘Force’.

2nd XI Football
In the second match of the season against St George's the 2nd XI scored more goals than in the last three
seasons combined, a measure as to just how strong the team was this season. In previous years the 2nd
XI has had to fight for every inch of territory and every second of possession.For once, however this year
was different. The team was dominant in midfield and it is there that matches are won and lost. Mueller,
Borelius and Efemuai provided the slick feet whilst
Cartwright and Coen acted as traditional hard men
and movers.In defence we were solid,Boer proved
a brave and competitive goal keeper and a back
four of Lazaro ma, Zakhir mi, Ker (Capt.) and
Treacher proved impenetrable. Up front we
undoubtedly had the goods in the form of Boyo,
eleven goals for a season at over a goal a match is
quite some performance. Supported by Aguirre,
Boyo was powerful, deft and accurate and most of
all he can hold a ball up when it counts. The best
season in many years.

3rd XI Football
This has been a successful and enjoyable term for the 3rd XI team and the results reflect the effort and
desire to win the team have put in against some very capable opponents. Five wins, one draw and four
losses. More impressive has been the gargantuan goal tally of 54 goals scored by Sunningdale and only
20 conceded.
Out of a large squad of twenty-seven boys,earning a place in the team has been no easy feat. Having this
level of competition to get into the eleven has been important to the team's season. All of the boys in
game two who fought hard to earn a place in the 3rds and 4ths should be acknowledged, because
without this positive rivalry the success would have been harder to achieve.
