
"I can be a complicated communicator," Liz Phair deadpans in "Big Tall Man," the second track on her long-awaited third album, "whitechocolatespaceegg" (Matador/Capitol), which arrives in stores today.
Actually, Phair is and always has been a straightforward pop songwriter. Rock critics are the ones who insist on complicated "post-feminist" analyses of her songs.
This isn't to say that the Winnetka native - like Bridget Jones and many other women her age - isn't rife with contradictions and confused about what it means to be a strong woman and a loving wife and mother in the '90s.
But too many of the reviews of "whitechocolatespaceegg" have read like term papers for a women's studies class. …
